Top Georgia DB Reid switching visit to UT

Highly rated defensive back Greg Reid’s recruitment took another turn Wednesday with news that the prep All-American will likely visit Tennessee this weekend.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Wednesday morning that Reid, a Lowndes High School standout and the newspaper’s player of the year, will likely visit UT this weekend instead of a previously planned trip to Alabama.

“They (Tennessee) have been with me longer than Alabama,” Reid told the newspaper.

Reid, who was named defensive MVP in the Under Armour all-star game earlier this month, also told the newspaper he had eliminated Florida from consideration.

“It didn’t feel like home anymore,” he said. “I wish the Gators the best. It’s just not the place for me.”

That’s a sharp departure for Reid, who committed to the Gators last February before backing off his pledge earlier this month.

Reid's choice to eliminate Florida was at least partially due to an official visit last weekend, in which Reid said Gators coach Urban Meyer was upset about his decision to de-committ.

"He asked, 'Where were all these other schools before the Under Armour game? Did they even know who Greg Reid was as a sophomore and junior like we did?' (Meyer) spoke in a very powerful (tone)," Reid said, according to the newspaper.

Reid told the newspaper that Meyer tried to elicit another verbal pledge before the Valdosta, Ga., native left Florida on Sunday.

Reid plans to take an official visit Georgia on Jan. 30 before announcing his decision on national signing day, which is Feb. 4.

Reid also told the newspaper that Florida State is a finalist and that FSU, Auburn and Alabama sent coaches to visit with him Tuesday.

Wow. Even if we don't get all these kids who were off our radar 2 months ago, how impressive is it that because of the coaching change, they are at least willing to give us a look? And what if we do pick up a couple of them? That Top 10 recruiting class is looking more feasible by the minute. Go Vols!!!

Great news for us. I'm in ATL and I'm not really getting the feeling in the press down here that we will land this kid but obviously anything can happen with the recruiters we have. I'm certainly hoping for the best.

Go get him Monte. Sounds like a kid we can get and one that we need.

All of this is just a stepping stone to next year. I mean just think if CLK and Co. can get kids interested this quick, imagine what they can do with 6 or 7 months. I expect us to have a Top 5 class next year and maybe a Top 12 this year. By year 3 we'll lead the nation in defense.

WTF KNS, journalism not matter anymore? You didn't even try to change the story, but simply plagiarized it almost word-for-word from the AJC. All these hacks do is troll message boards looking for someone referencing an article and then they rip it off and post it here like it's their news. No wonder the newspaper industry is dying.

With these two scenerios, every true Vol fan should be very pleased with accomplishments of our new staff. Hopefully, it will be a sign of bigger and better days for the Vols>>>SEC Championships, BCS Bowls and eventually another national championship.

Way to go, Kiff&Co.

Not the first time this has happened. A couple of weeks ago, the KNS picked up an AP article that plagerized the AJC.

The newspaper industry as we know it is dead.

If the coaches we've hired are anywhere near as good as advertised, we should be the no 1 defense this year. What were we last year, no 7, 10, 13? Whatever, it was pretty high and now we have these guys. Anything less than no 1 defense in the nation next year is a bust. We got players, all they need is coaching up.

Anything less than #1 defense is a bust? Pretty high standard there bud.

Have you checked out our D-line depth chart? May want to do that. We also lost 3 LBs from the rotation. I'm hopeful, but "expecting" #1 might be excessive. Or perhaps your "Fulmer" is showing?

I am as excited as the next guy about getting a visit from such a high quality player, and even more excited when it involves taking opportunities away from Alabama and Florida, but he appears most likely headed to UGA.

That having been said, without this staff even getting a team on the field yet, I haven't been this excited about the UT football program in years. It is nice to be a part of the conversation again when young men are talking about where they want to play football for the next four years of their life.

you were feeling the great recruiting thing when Fulmer was here and watching it rot away on the bench and never got no better once these recruits got here and you still didnt see big wins year after year over our rivals and each year you still got excited just like the rest of us.If you cant get excited now over this coaching staff and what they are doing in little time they have been here then you need to pack it in and call it a year.the reason in the past recruiting didnt translate over onto the football field was all on fulmer and nobody else.these coaches we have now will make it translate on the field,it might take a year or two but it will happen

First thing first---get the top talent--(which is what our coaches are attempting to do) then coach them up, game plan etc. I believe the previous regime did a good job of bringing in talent--I will stop there.

All the hate? C'mon people, there are a lot of similarities in the incoming president's and Lane Kiffin's situation. A lot of people hate them only because they were comfortable with the old regime.

But guess what?

As Americans, we need to hope for the best for our new president, because where he goes, like it or not, it affects us 100%.

As Vol fans, we should hope the best for Kiffin, because the success or failure of the Vols rests on his shoulders.

So, in conclusion, even if you don't agree with the new president, support him, and hope he makes great decisions, same for our new coach!

NoogaVol55 writes:

It is not uncommon fellas, for Meyer or any coach for that matter to try and play "hardball" with recruits. Meyer thought he could throw a blanket of guilt over Reid's head and force his hand into recommitting with the Gators. I am glad Reid stoood his ground, this is a very important decision for high school athletes to make and they shouldn't feel pressured, although they almost always are pressured into going to one school or the other. I would like to think Meyer was more professional in going about this, but the truth is a lot of schools will pull similiar antics.

That being said, I hope we land this kid. As previously mentioned, room him with EB on his visit and hire Jessica Alba to be his hostess for the weekend. Oh yeah...Meyer is a D-Bag!

Go Vols!!!

Dan Williams staying on campus is as big as any recruit we could get this year. I don't think many people realize how much Ellix Wilson meant to the defense last year either. Hopefully one of the younger guys is ready to step up.

Personally, I'll be well-satisfied with a top 20 defense given what we lost in the front 7 and the fact that we have one legitimate starter in the DT rotation at this point.

FYI, I agree that Drew Edwards did, as you say, basically cite the AJC story word-for-word and perhaps he shouldn't have taken a byline credit for it. But it isn't plagiarism because he cited the AJC as the main source of the story.

It isn't always easy getting some of these kids to talk to members of the media they don't know.

I'd rather see this story than no story at all. Some people complain when there isn't any recruiting news on this site. And others complain when the meat of the story comes from a different source. If breaking these stories was so easy everybody would do it. OK, maybe not those that want to make major money.

Signal... good post.

However, the sudden fervor and patriotism that surfaced on 1/20/09 just proves my point that human nature is riddled with unaccountability.

I will support this country and the leaders that run it because that's what scripture tells us. But I will not stake my morality and decisions based off an individual... they only disappoint.

That is why I will wear an American Flag on my T-shirt and a VOLS License plate cover on my truck and not a sweater and reggae toboggan with my president's face plastered on it.
