COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s football team struggled at the end of last season. It appears the academic work of the players did, too.
Athletic grade reports released Thursday show the Gamecocks posted a 2.374 grade-point average for the fall semester — the lowest GPA among the school’s 17 athletic teams.
It was also a drop from fall 2007, when the football team earned its best in-season performance on record with a cumulative 2.540 GPA. Two falls ago, the team had a collective GPA of 2.304.
The Gamecocks lost their final three games this season to finish 7-6.
Overall, South Carolina’s 500 student athletes had a cumulative mark of 3.006 for the fall semester, according to the report. There were 13 teams that finished with a combined 3.0 or higher.
Men’s golf earned the highest GPA at 3.506 — it’s highest cumulative score ever. Women’s track and field (3.404) and baseball (3.114) also posted their highest GPAs.
Men’s basketball had its second highest GPA ever at 2.749, the school said. That’s up from last fall’s 2.449.
The athletic department said there were 49 athletes who made the President’s List, which honors those with 4.0 GPAs.
The other teams’ GPAs were listed as: Women’s swimming and diving (3.409); volleyball (3.366); men’s tennis (3.350); women’s tennis (3.325); softball (3.263); women’s golf (3.234); women’s soccer (3.164); equestrian (3.139); men’s soccer (3.096); men’s track and field (3.048); men’s swimming and diving (2.869); and women’s basketball (2.751),
