MEMPHIS - Melrose High School senior linebacker Greg King is enjoying this, being one of the most sought college prospects in the Southeast.
Last weekend, King had the red carpet rolled out for him in Knoxville, where the 6-3, 200-pound standout was joined by his mother and grandmother on an official visit to Tennessee.
This weekend, he'll travel to Miami, where King will be an official guest of a Hurricane program that already boasts one former Melrose star in sophomore running back Graig Cooper.
King, who's first official visit was to Texas Tech last month, said Auburn has also emerged as one of four leaders for his services, adding he will likely make an official visit to the school on Jan. 30.
"Auburn came in late, and they're supposed to come and see me (at Melrose on Thursday)," King said.
King, one of two remaining uncommitted players among The Commercial Appeal's 10 Most Wanted football recruits, told the Knoxville News Sentinel, "I know where I'm going," following his visit to Tennessee last Sunday.
However, with Auburn now making a late charge and King still planning to make a pair of college visits, much could change before Feb. 4, the first day of the national signing period.
"Real recognizes real. I can tell if they're just telling me stuff that I want to hear," said King, one of five finalists for The CA's 2008-09 Pepsi Best of the Preps defensive player of the year award after racking up 130 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries this season.
King, whom Scout.com ranks the No. 30 strongside linebacker prospect nationally and Rivals.com ranks the No. 31 inside linebacker prospect in the nation, admitted he was captivated by his trip to Knoxville.
"They did the whole thing. We were down there kicking it, man," he said. "We did a little breakdown of film and everything, and I caught on fast. I was being a player and they were coaching."
Also considering Tennessee is Harding Academy senior wide receiver Marlon Brown, the state's consensus No. 1 overall prospect.
Brown (6-5, 205), a Parade All-American and one of five finalists for The CA's Pepsi BOP offensive player of the year award, is also considering Georgia, Florida, Ohio State and Ole Miss, and will make an official visit to Florida this weekend.
Brown has already made visits to Georgia, Ohio State and Ole Miss (last weekend). He will visit Tennessee on Jan. 30.

Recruits are committing to other programs all the time, but none are committing to Tennessee. I am a little worried at this point.

Maybe he could double as a kicker?

We may have him, but I hate hearing that these kids want to go visit other places. Especially after they've said they know they're coming here. I know they want to take the trips, but dang, if you know you're coming here don't keep the coaches and the fans all torn up.

Can't blame them for getting all the mileage they can.
Roar of the crowd...

For a lot of these guys, it's a chance to travel and see a few sights they have never or have rarely ever seen before. I can't blame them. Doesn't mean I like it, but I can't blame them.

I agree. Maybe the out-of-state prospects are waiting to the last moment to avoid local critism. Of course, King is in-state so who knows. However, I wish someone from this weekend would commit.

I wouldn't pass up a free trip to Miami either.

Does anyone know if Brown is locked into Georgia for his selection?

Outside of south beach and parts of ft. lauderdale, I'd rather drink the acid out of my car battery than spend time downtown.

I’m not usually a conspiracy theorists, but I can’t help but wonder if all the these kids that are saying they’re committed and not actually committing are the result of a ploy by CLK. Thinking about it, if the kid does not actually sign with UT on 2/4, then no problem. But if he does, then CLK is applauded. If several do sign with UT, then you’ve got yourself some free press and national exposure.

King sounds like he had an awesome visit at UT. Probably just taking the Miami visit out of curiousity and a trip. I hope he does not get swayed by Auburn coming in late. It is a chance of a lifetime to play for your home state and this incredible coaching staff.

we need some orange mound on the hill!

Who can blame a kid for taking all the free trips he can. Some of them need to see these places.. Miami.. etc., so they can really appreciate Knoxville. Chill, we'll get our fair share.

How many trips did u take UTfan4life. Tell us a little about them i.e. similarities differences etc.. Just wondering how many schools fed recruits total bs or tell them what they want to hear and how many are actually trueful?

I agree and have a C-note that says so. Brown will also wear Knoxville orange next year. Just having King and Brown would boost our ranking up quite a bit from where it is now (not that it really matters if we are ranked 1st or 50th)

I'm not a subscriber, but I just looked at Volquest and one of the title's said that David Oku is taking two visits. Does anyone know if that is true because there was an article on here a day or two ago saying that he was solid and that he wasn't going to take anymore visits? Also Volquest stated that we are hosting 16 visitors. Does anyone know anything about this as well? I wish these two sites would stay on the same page.
bluetick writes:
All I know is from what was written here. Interesting that Volquest states that. I'd believe them more than KNS.

Oku is visiting Syracuse this weekend and Auburn next weekend.
FYI: Hooker has the journalistic capabilities of Terri Schiavo.

Thats really not good. We have all of these great recruiters but yet we can't even keep the recruits we have. And we sure aren't getting any other commitments.

King knows when peoples just telling him stuff, UT's the real deal, WE NEED YOU!
