Reid not visiting UT

Cornerback Greg Reid from Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga., will not visit Tennessee this month as had been previously reported.

In a text message to the News Sentinel, Reid said he will visit Alabama this weekend and Georgia next weekend before National Signing Day on Feb. 4.

Reid is also considering Florida State, which many believe is his leader.

Schools were sent scrambling this week when Reid eliminated Florida from consideration. Many thought the Gators had Reid locked up for their 2009 signing class.

Reid is considered one of the elite cornerbacks in the nation. He was named a co-MVP of the Under Armour All-American Game earlier this month.

Why would anybody want to go to Florida State? Just another college with a head coach that has overstayed his effectiveness.

If he has no interest in playing here then good luck to him and we'll move on to the next guy. I'm sure there are lots of schools where he can be successful, I don't think FSU is one that is likely to get to a NC game anytime soon...but then who of his remaining choices are?

Made that drive MANY times while I was just a school kid at Valdosta State. The word around lowndes county is Reid is a seminole. Before you ask my "sources" I have family living there. I have a nephew that goes to school with Reid.

Great on the field, not so hot in the classroom. Good luck, may fit well at FSU if that is the case, we all know they get the tests in advance.

I hear the same. Richt, like ALL coaches, really wants to lock down the states best talent, but I hear the kid is a nole fan from the get-go. Valdosta is in Georgia, but in reality is more of a North Florida town. Much like how some view Memphis in Tennessee.

Do you live near the VSU campus? I remember Jimbo's as having the biggest omelette you have ever laid eyes on.

This is not a loss for Tennessee recruiting since we were the longest of longshots anyway. He probably only listed Tennessee as a shot at Urban Meyer anyway. Getting him would have been bonus. Still, it is encouraging to once again see Tennessee listed with elite Southern athletes.

I agree... certainly not enough Myron Rolle's out there to satisfy everyone (5-star athlete with a Rhodes Scholar on his trophy shelf).

I'd like to have a guy that could hold up his end of a conversation just as much as the next guy... but these guys have different skill sets than the rest.

The world needs individuals that are in professions that make them come alive. The gridiron apparently makes some individuals come alive.

They provide a service to us fans and in return we pay them for it. It's relative to the amount of tenacity and passion we have for the game.

Whether they're "worth" it or not is hardly a question any of us can answer. It is a damn shame to see some athletes throw all that away and I will be the first to scold them for it.

But if a guy is willing to work at something hard in his life, we can't tell him he has to be able to solve the Bernoulli equation or write the next great American Novel or we won't appreciate his talent.

I'm sure a respectable athlete appreciates the work I do for a living and vice versa. It's economy, business, and human nature.

Listen here, baldfan. This kid is 18 years old. Do you remember what you were doing when you were 18 years old? Probably getting that GED and going to work for McDonalds or Coca Cola or something like that is my guess. This guy is only looking out for what's best for him. It's obvious that he saw through sub-URBAN Meyer's nonsense and found that there is more to life than an emotional decision that would ruin the rest of his life. If he doesn't want to come to UT it probably means that he met some idiot like you and said, you know, McDonald's has some pretty good sandwiches, but this guy is a UT fan and I can do better than that!

Memphis belongs to Tennessee. I was just saying that the perception some have is that Memphis is so far removed form Knoxville that it seems to be more in Mississippi. Much like here in Georgia, Valdosta is so far south of Atlanta and/or Athens that it almost seems more of a north Florida town.

4. Peter White
5. Sam Montgomery
6. Janzen Jackson

That's my point right there. I don't want you guys confusing me with this dude. Some folks might not like me or what I have to say, but at least it is what I have to say. I can take people having a problem with me for expressing my thoughts and opinions, but when things coming from this moron makes me look bad. That's a problem.

If you are the best or one of the best in the world we want you to be one of ours, period. We don’t have that many Eric Berrys, we can always use another. When we get to the point we can turn down 5* because we have a full rotation plus 4 maybe. IMO!

Sounds like you are trying to be this kid's agent. All I'm saying is, we will get someone else - we can't get 'em all! Now, put Yoohoo drink down, choke down another Krispy Kreme donut, and get back to work sweeping that floor at Rocky Top!

Well, I was in Memphis a few months back, and I went into a convenience store there to pick up a 6-pack. (I think it was a Citgo-- could be wrong-- it was right at the edge of Germantown.) Anyway, inside they were selling Tiger High hats and shirts, Miss St hats, Ole Miss hats, Arkansas hats, and Vanderbilt(!) hats. They didn't even carry UT apparel of any sort. I think the perception around Memphis is that UT isn't THEIR school, except of course to Memphians who graduated from UT. That perception needs to change for UT to ever "build a fence" around Memphis, recruiting-wise.

ctownvol writes:

in response to Hounddog:

I was just saying that with Memphis being so far away from UT that it's almost like Memphis is seen as not being in Tennessee as far as recruiting goes. Does that make more sense? I DO know Memphis is in Tennessee.

Volunatic writes:

The "first family of UT football" is still the Majors family, IMO, although the Reveiz clan is making a run at the title.
