ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Not long after stepping on campus, Tee Martin is delivering a measure of star quality to New Mexico’s football program.
Martin, who led Tennessee to an undefeated national championship in 1998 after two years as Peyton Manning’s backup, was among the assistants introduced Friday by newly hired Lobos coach Mike Locksley.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to coach at New Mexico, to be with coach Locksley and to be a coach in the spread offense,” said Martin, who also interviewed for the same position at Oregon. “It’s a system that I’m excited about seeing developed here at New Mexico.”
Martin will coach quarterbacks, of course, and his name recognition is already making a strong impression.
“The first thing when he got here, I wanted to get his autograph. I haven’t met many national championship-winning quarterbacks,” said Darrell Dickey, the former North Texas coach who will be New Mexico’s offensive coordinator.
The 30-year-old Martin spent the last two years as an assistant at high schools in Georgia. Before that, he was the passing game coordinator for one season at Division II Morehouse College in Atlanta.
But his track to Albuquerque began several years ago with Martin’s involvement as a coach at Nike’s training camps for college prospects, and running his own quarterback camps.
In that role, Martin worked closely with top quarterback prospects like Jacory Harris, now at Miami, Georgia signee Aaron Murray and California star Matt Barkley, who recently enrolled early at USC.
“All the top kids that you guys see in top recruiting services, we’ve had the opportunity to work with them,” Martin said.
It was while running those camps that Martin met Locksley, who introduced himself after seeing Martin at work.
“Man, you need to get into college coaching,” Locksley told Martin. “You’d be a great fit.”
At the time, Locksley was a rising star in the coaching ranks as an assistant at Florida and, later, Illinois. Locksley recalled telling Martin he planned to call after becoming a head coach.
“That was big for me,” Martin said. “Not only was he evaluating players, he was evaluating me as well. A lot of coaches didn’t take that opportunity to do that. It lets you know what kind of an eye he has for the game.”
After that, Martin said he embraced a more professional approach to his coaching, even at the high school level. And in the back of his mind, he considered the prospect of working with Locksley.
“It was something that was talked about and dreamed about several years ago,” Martin said. “Now it has come to fruition.”
Martin told the Register-Guard the decision between New Mexico and Oregon “was just a comfort thing for me, coaching receivers or coaching quarterbacks.”
Martin had a pre-existing relationship with quarterback Tajh Boyd, who is being recruited by Oregon.
Boyd, who committed to Tennessee but was told in Decemember that he didn’t fit in new coach Lane Kiffin’s pro-style offense, has favored Oregon and Ohio State over the last few weeks. He took a visit to Clemson this past week and there were reports that Kelly visited Boyd’s home in Virginia on Tuesday.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to rush the field after the Florida game. You the man Tee.

Those pansy students in 2004 didn't even make a go for it... I'm still miffed.

Nothing against Tee or any coach but I always wonder why a team would take an ex QB and make him a Receivers coach? To me you would think that someone would want an ex receiver.
I know every team does it I am just not sure why.
SemperVol writes:
I think it's just a symbiotic relationship between QB and WR.
If a quarterback can notice the cuts, hipwork, guage the speed, and routes of a receiver they can be deadly.
A QB needs a thorough understanding of all the facets of a game. I'm willing to bet Peyton Manning would make one hell of a Defensive Coordinator.
Same reason why a graduate in, say Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, to me, would be a more favorable candidate for a managerial position than an individual sporting a Business degree.
Might not believe me, but I see it alot. A good pedigree and /or a broad knowledge base is money.

Same here.
I couldn't believe how fast the goalposts came down. Since then I have seen other school's students rasslin with the goal posts for almost an hour. I thought to myself... weak.
Big Mix did you get a piece of that goal post as a keepsake? The one I had busted an ambulance window, went up the strip, down university maybe, and then into the river. I was sad to not get a piece. My older brother had given my a piece off of one from the vandy game in 85- it sealed the SEC and sugar bowl appearance.

Likely the News-Sentinel reported when the news of an agreement broke last week.
Then today was some sort of official announcement or release with a quote that a new organization feels obligated to report.

I loved the florida game but to me;that crazy arkansas game really made the season.
Vol_in_Mich writes:
I agree. We were beat, what was their QB thinking? Glad it happened, '98 was a crazy season. You need a lot of luck to win a championship no matter who you are. Anyway, good luck Tee & thanks for the N.C. People don't realize that you're the only QB to win one at UT.
Go VOLS!!!
LadyVolsEighTimes writes:
Amen, as much a gator hater as I am, Arkie Game was the lynch pin to the whole Championship. The Football Gods wanted the Vols to have that game!!

Good luck Tee! My favorite Tee Martin play is still the 4th qtr run at Syracuse with the game on the line.
Amazing!

Good luck Tee. You'll be a success whatever you do and wherever you are. Hopefully someday you'll be back at UT. Until then win them all (unless you are playing the Vols).

What happened was that the first guy who jumped the fence was clothes-lined by one of the sheriff's deputies in front of the student section. He was completely destroyed, it was better than any professional wrestler could ever do. There was a collective "ohhh" from the crowd.
I did ponder being the lone person to try right after that, but I was 20 rows back. I should have, would have been a great memory

also we had beat UF the year before, and two years before that.
