Ole Miss hands Kentucky first SEC loss

Rebels improve to 12-95 against Wildcats with 85-80 win

Terrico White and David Huertas each scored 21 points and Mississippi upset No. 24 Kentucky 85-80 on Tuesday, snapping the Wildcats' five-game win streak a day after they entered the Top 25 for the first time this season.

Neither Kentucky's Jodie Meeks nor Huertas - the SEC's Nos. 1 and 3 scorers - managed a field goal in the first half. But Huertas hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds gone in the second half and the injury-ravaged Rebels (11-9, 2-4 SEC) managed to overcome 24 points from Patrick Patterson for a rare win over the Wildcats (16-5, 5-1).

The win snapped Ole Miss' current three-game losing streak and its nine-game slide to Kentucky, which had won 11 of 12 overall coming into the game. It was just the 12th win for the Rebels in 107 games against the Wildcats.

The Rebels, without three of their best players due to season-ending knee injuries, managed one of their best defensive games of the season.

The Wildcats were fourth in the nation with a shooting percentage of 50.2 percent per game, but struggled against Ole Miss' 2-3 zone and shot 34.3 percent (25-of-65). It was an especially difficult night for Meeks, the nation's No. 3 scorer coming in with 26.1 points per game.

The Rebels held him without a field goal for the first 28:04 and he finished 4-for-15 from the floor with 21 points.

Kentucky never crept closer than three points after Meeks hit his first two field goals of the game to make it 58-55 with 11:18 left.

Malcolm White scored five points and Huertas hit another 3 during a quick 8-2 run to put the game out of reach.

Ole Miss hit 10 of 26 threes in the game while the Wildcats were just 7-of-28 from the 3-point line.

Auburn 66, Texas Pan-Am 63: The Tigers blew an 11-point halftime lead and trailed with around six minutes left before battling back for the home win.

Auburn (13-7) was led by DeWayne Reed's 14 points and six assists. Lucas Hargrove was the only other Tiger to make double figures in scoring, with 10.

Texas Pan-Am fell to 5-13 with the loss and extended its road woes to 0-9 on the season. P.J. Turner led the Broncs with 16.

CBP did, he said after the game we don't have anyone that can get a hand in his face...."we don't have the personnel to guard him" I think was his quote.

Good post-stepping up.

Don't see any SEC teams in Sweet 16.

High expectations for Meeks when 21 points is considered an "off" night.

SEC may be down but it is never dull.

Go Vols!

Ole Miss may have written the blueprint for defending the 'Cats but Kentucky will play great when the Vols invade Lexington on, what is it, February 21 or something? Count on it. I've wondered all year why Tennessee doesn't play some more zone. They are certainly "long" enough to do it and cover the court. I could see them playing a Syracuse-type 2-3 zone and being very hard to shoot over or penetrate. I know CBP and Steve Forbes are man-to-man guys but sometimes you have to re-think philosophy to fit personnel. (It would also be nice to have a player the caliber of Carmelo Anthony!)

Good stuff here. Agree completely about us playing more zone. It's nice to have a philosophy of the game, but it is also nice to be able to adapt it or even change it if necessary to fit a particular team.

ZONE. Think Kansas - this year. We played some zone against them for a little while; first half I think it was. That was when Kansas had their slump. We went back to man; they torched us. I know it ain't Pearl's style but....if the shoe fits once, try it on again!

Nobody thinks Auburn's got Sweet-16 potential with that 3-pt win over PanAm??

from what I've seen the past 2 weeks, the big orange will lose 3-4 more games. Our guards are big, but they just can't play D. I don't think they can score either. Last 2 games Tatum and Hopson look like they are either asleep or on something!!
