Georgia tailback Samuel has wrist surgery, out for spring

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia tailback Richard Samuel, a leading candidate to take over for starter Knowshon Moreno, will miss spring practice after having surgery on his left wrist.

Samuel is expected to recover in time for the 2009 season.

Samuel, who played behind Moreno as a freshman in 2008, had surgery Wednesday by a hand specialist at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, according to a statement released by team spokesman Claude Felton.

Samuel injured the wrist during Georgia’s Capital One Bowl win over Michigan State.

Samuel will wear a cast for three months, followed by a second surgery to remove surgical hardware in his wrist.

Samuel and Caleb King are the top returning candidates at tailback to replace Moreno, who is leaving school early to enter the NFL draft. Samuel, who had 26 carries for 133 yards and a touchdown as a freshman, was the team’s third-leading rusher, behind Moreno and King.

You want him? We've got quality behind him.

One is as volatile as his hair is red, and the other may enlist in the marines at any moment's notice, but I do believe that we've got quality behind Number 8.
