Linebacker Petey Smith has committed to play football for Alabama, according to multiple media reports.
The 6-foot, 240-pound linebacker from Armwood High School in Seffner, Fla., was long expected to select between the Crimson Tide and Auburn.
The Vols secured an official visit from Smith last weekend, making some believe that UT was in contention.
Smith, however, was considered a long shot for UT even last summer before the Vols’ 5-7 season and a coaching change.
Smith told the News Sentinel in December at practice for the Under Armour All-American Game that the Vols showed some interest earlier that month then didn’t contact him for two weeks.
At that point, Smith said he was no longer considering UT, which made his official visit to Knoxville a bit surprising.
Smith’s older brother, Eric Smith, just completed his freshman season as an Auburn running back.
Smith is probably better suited to play inside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive system. Otherwise, Smith could easily grow into a defensive lineman in a 4-3 scheme.

Save your welcomes for a Bama site, or aren't there any free ones out there for you to join your fellow crimson bribes on?

This was on ESPN for a while now.

You finally beat Auburn in a decade, and you think you own em. typical

i hope we have more GOOD surprises than bad. i.e. committing to a rival school.
Come on Marlon Brown, do what is best for you and choose the VOLS!!!!!!!!

When is Kiff and Co. going to pull their first surprise?
All this hype for recruiting, but no one yet has verballed.
A lot of window shoppers on their visits, we'll see this weekend.

There were times I would have loved to don the pads, lace up the cleats and plant my big brother into the turf.
The guy looks mean... good get.

What team took goal posts down?? Utah? They dont play Bama every year. You are NOT used to winning. Bama was good a long time ago they havent been good for the last decade at least. Have 1 good year and now you think they have been good a long time. Dont seem right to me. Now UT is used to winning, that must be what you meant, right?

We have owned Bama 7 out of the last 10.. They have one good year and then get the phooey kicked out of them by UTAH.. Now thats funny......

Gentlemen, we should be polite to Bama987. It's not her fault that her mullet obscures her judgment.
As much as she enjoys visiting our site, maybe she'll eventually be lucky enough to wear orange.

I'll give you this. You will beat Tennessee Chattanooga next year.

I hope we pull Matt Barkely, that would be insane!!!!!!

Can we recruit someone that will do something about the eyesore on the strip that once housed O'Charley's and while they're at it, tear down that defunct Days Inn or turn it into apts.

WOO HOO Mullet Nation got a recruit! Not concerned about missing a linebacker, thats one position where we dont have to worry. crammer jammer su@# my hammer! WOOOOOO Mullet Nation!

The stench of your last two losses still hangs over you and Alamullet. Your seasons accomplishments were all flushed down the sheet hole after losing the two most critical games.
cincivol writes:
Im sorry I just dont get it...All this fuss over a guy that is a likely tweener. Too short to play anywhere on the D-Line, too slow to cover side-line to side-line, and too short and slow to be a coverage LB. I am not one of those guys to say we wouldnt want him or he's a bum. But Da%^ this guy is nothing to sweat your class about. If you look at all the top LB in the league or college, most are at least 6-2, and no more than 230. Speed kills. Like i said maybe a good get but come on with the sky is falling.
Greg King 6-3, 200, 4.5
Jerod Askew 6-0, 230, 4.6
Marlon Walls 6-2, 225, 4.55
D.T. Shackleford 6-1, 220, 4.6
Nigel-Mitchell-Thornton 6-2, 228, 4.7
If you look at the list you will see a trend. Fast, quick, hard hitters. If you consider Petey a DL then maybe some weight and then good to go. If Vols get King then this class of 5 LB will be fine plus any too slow safeties that come aboard. Slow down on the pannick button. For a new staff this is excellent compared to any other completely, and i stress completely new staff!!!

While it is difficult to refrain from responding to moronic, outrageous posts by some Vol-haters on this board, in doing so, we simply provide them with the attention they seek. If every Vol fan who reads and posts on this board would totally ignore such posts, they will eventually cease. One response, and life is once again breathed into the dead monster. Let's attempt to refuse to respond to such posts. I think we would all agree that lively debate is good and provides interesting reading. I'm sure we would also agree that insults and name-calling has no place in adult dialogue. GO VOLS!

Nope-- 21-- you forgot about the UT championship awarded to UT by the "Last Five Games of the Regular Season Committee" in 1988. (LFGOTRSC is also the organization responsible for awarding bama 12 of their "national championships", I seem to recall.)

bama 987 I've got your back here. The only reason I got to this site is because Google Alerts sent me an update on Alabama Football. Ironic it sent me here because of an announcement for an Alabama recruit. However, after reading the comments here I can't let a fellow fan get beat up alone. I don't "troll" these sights but now that I'm here I'll say this. I think we had a great year and even though most of us were disappointed over the losses, we did end up having our only losses to the #1 and #2 teams in the country. I'll take it for now. I believe their is more on the way. It's a process and I enjoy being along for the ride.
The_Real_UT writes:
Did you say something? Or were you just CHOKING with the rest of Alabama's football program?

How nice..it was expected, but he did take a visit. We already know for the most part who is going where. I would only like to hear the stories of getting players that wern't supposed to come to Tennessee...I could care less about someone committing to Alabubba. Moving on please..And don't bother Antagonists and jobless interlopers in responding to my post. I am not interested. =)

I was really hoping for either Petey or Nico Johnson to jump over to UT. Now it's down to Tana Patrick. He clearly likes Bammer but he's been very quiet about what he will do.
We definitely need help at ILB so Patrick would be a huge get. If we do get him, UT will possibly have the best group of LB recruits this year, if he goes to Bammer they will likely have the best LB class.
cjraney writes:
Meant to say if we get Greg King AND Tana Patrick.

Anyway, best of luck to Smith except for the 3rd Saturday in October.
Probably won't be the only guy to commit elsewhere between now and signing day given that we got in late on so many recruits.
In my non-professional opinion, I don't think losing Smith is that big of a blow. No disrespect intended, but he looks like more of a plugger type LB. King looks to be a much better fit as more of a sideline to sideline LB.
Plus we already have Jerod Askew, Nigel Mitchell-Thornton, along with Marlon Walls, and DT Shackelford as being committed to the Vols.
invisiblekid writes:
I don't think it's been mentioned on here, but Schofield shut down his recruitment and is "ready to sign" with the Vols.

That Lance Thompson coup really must have hurt. That has to be the reason why I see so many crimson period stains on a Volunteer board. Your just mad because even your best coaches know that Tennessee is better than Bama and they are willing to take a pay cut to come here. Ouch! That's right Bama, just bend over, hold your breath and close your eyes cause this is going to get ugly.
