LB Gordon, who visited UT last weekend, picks Pittsburgh

Linebacker Shane Gordon from Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Fla., has committed to Pittsburgh, according to ESPN.com.

The 6-foot, 220-pound Gordon chose the Panthers over Tennessee, Auburn and South Florida. Gordon took an official visit to UT last weekend.

Gordon’s high school teammate, running back Jason Douglas, is also committed to Pittsburgh.

Fodder for the interlopers..Don't respond..There will be a lot of players not signing with Tennessee as well as other schools will also experience the same thing. We still have a great recruiting class. Don't fall for the plants and interlopers comments when a recruiter doesn't sign with us. It's expected.

Reading all these negative post is killing me. We have a new coaching staff that only had 2 months to recruit, and has done a pretty good job. Half of the guys that are coming to visit were long shots, but they weren't even looking prior to our coaching change.

This won't be a great class for Kiffin because he got started so late and the uproar over firing Fulmer. But its amazing that he got so many visits from so many top-notch players and that created a buzz. But the buzz doesn't change the fact that the late start made signing a lot of these kids impossible.

With a full year under their belts I feel like next year's class will be great. Only time will tell.

This kid not signing is not only not the end of the world, it is to be expected.

Not to mention this happens every year. Kids change their minds. We will probably lose Stokes and maybe Oku, but when the dust settles it will be an ok class. Half of these guys won't pan out anyway and some of the unexpected ones will grow into stars. Everyone should just relax and enjoy the ones that do want to play for us.

Come on guys! It's not about a lack of intelligence, or ability, or even testicular fortitude. It is about a choice. These kids are getting to do just what all of us who have completed our higher education had the chance to do. They are choosing to attend the school where they feel most comfortable. From the article, it would seem as though going to a school where a teammate is headed was at least somewhat important to him. Who cares! We will get someone else, and if we don't, then we trust in our coaches to develop the talent, which they have been given. The truth is, either we trust the coaches or we don't.

If there is a position in this years class that we are solid at its LB. I'm not worried about this loss. Lets grab up Tana Patrick and all will be right with the world. Pearly Graves and Sam Montgomery among the most important recruits that we NEED. Well, other than QB, but it don't look like thats going to happen this year. So, lets build up the defense and run the ball like madmen.

Well...I must confess...this is my first year to follow recriuting this closely. Is it always this stressful? Its been fun and I've slightly become addicted; checking websites several times daily. Quick question...I've seen some posters on here and Volnation commenting on Reuben Randall (sp?) visiting this weekend, but I've not seen anything official. Any news on this?

I agree MrsVol..I have never followed recruiting much until the new coaching change. It is rather addictive. I have always believed that stars don't determine what you can do, it's how well you and develop once you get into school. I believe for now anyway, that Coach K has a plan, he is surrounded by good staff, he will get good players, and the rest is up to game day. But for now, it is fun to see who we get. For Rueben Randall, he is out of Bastrop, LA near Monroe and it is even a miracle that Coach K got him in to visit. He's still LSU all the way, but you never know since he states he's still uncommitted. He's supposed to visit, but again, these kids are pulled in all directions. He may just cancel. It's still an eternity for a recruit until Feb 4.

yaevols I agree with you that the stars don't mean everything. Scouts has a list from the 2005 class - the 5 star bust. UT had 3, Coker, Crompton and Morley. They have a list of 50.

mrsvol, I have been a volaholic for many years, but until this year didn't follow recruiting as closely as I have since the coaching change. Now I feel as though I might be becoming a recruitaholic.

DaveVol writes:

Though I am still somewhat skeptical on hiring Kiffin. I don't believe he can be judged by this recruiting class. He and his staff got a lte start. We'll all see what kind of coach he is by the product this fall and the 2010 signing class.

Thanks for the info! I knew LSU was leading with him but I wasn't sure if he was planning on a visit to Knoxville. I teach high school and you're right its hard to predict what's in the head of a 17/18 year old. I am excited to see some competitive football played with some pride in the fall though!

All of these guys are late comers to the UT boards and few if any were expected to even give TN a look! KNS is putting this out as a loss and while the kid chose to sign somewhere else it is important to note that UT wasnt in the running two months ago! So the visit was a positive! And maybe he didnt like UT or maybe he didnt like who he was going to be competing with for playing time! Remember we already have at least 4 LBs in this class, one the 7th rated player at his position!

I agree on Randle visiting. Just the fact that he is giving us a look says something about the staff! I agree that I think his heart is in LSU but with their QB troubles, the lack of utilization of the WR's there, and their devotion to the ground game he may feel he has a better shot at NFL and 1st round draft pick at TN

No one knows what goes through these young men's mind or what is attracting them. Maybe they believe it when a coach tells them they will start as a freshman. Maybe they really don't want to compete. Maybe they were persuaded by a pretty "host." 3000 guys sign scholly's for 3000 reasons.
