Auburn paying assistants more, head coach less

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn will pay its assistant football coaches considerably more this year while head coach Gene Chizik will earn less than Tommy Tuberville made in 2008.

Defensive coordinator Ted Roof’s $370,000 salary tops the list on Chizik’s new staff and is a $65,000 boost from what predecessor Paul Rhoads was pulling in during his lone season in Auburn.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is making $350,000, 20 percent more than Tuberville hired Tony Franklin for a year ago.

No contracts have been signed, but all the assistants agreed to multiyear deals in taking the jobs.

Two other assistants are also making at least $300,000, Trooper Taylor and Tracy Rocker. Taylor, the Tigers’ receivers coach and associate head coach, will earn $320,000. Rocker is being paid $300,000 to coach the defensive line.

Chizik’s $2 million salary is $800,000 less than Tuberville made last year.

The salaries for Auburn’s other assistants include: offensive line coach Jeff Grimes ($290,000), running backs coach Curtis Luper ($260,000) and tight ends and special teams coach Jay Boulware ($180,000). Tuberville’s other assistants, besides the coordinators, made between $180,000 and $200,000 last season.

Chizik still needs to hire two defensive coaches and plans to wait until after next Wednesday, which is national signing day.

The current payroll is just over $4 million. Tennessee is paying its new coaching staff $5.3 million this year, though defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is drawing a $1.2 million salary.

Like Chizik, Volunteers head coach Lane Kiffin is set to make a $2 million salary.

Well looks like Saban and Urban may need to take pay cuts to take part in this Hamilton experiment that is spreading.

Our offensive line last season couldn't block a largish rolling marshmallow, or even styrofoam replicas of a defensive line.

By the way Bama I never said our offensive line was anything. But you just made my point by responding with something completely off the wall. Good come back. LOL

Someone please post Gene Chiziks record at BoTech U? Can you imagine how stupid their AD will feel when bama drops about 50 on them this year.. Now that was a bad hire/fire..
Give CLK and CEO a full year to recruit and we will have a top 3 class and maybe these bama and gator fans will go away....

I'm not generally one to dog the KNS, but I like how they post this AP article from Auburn titled "Auburn Paying Assistants More, Head Coach Less", when we've endured week after week of "Tennesse Paying Assistant Coaches Forty Bazillion Dollars". What Tennesse is, in fact, doing is paying assistants more, head coach less.

Admittedly Auburn's assistant coaches are getting paid $1.3 million less than ours, but we hired Lance Thompson, Coach O, and Monte. Auburn is paying a little less for my secretary, a guy they found working the Chic-fil-a drive thru, and Bama987's brother-in-law. (Oh, and Trooper . . . who's actually kinda good.)

Do you have any idea how extremely hard it is to win a national championship? He will be extremely fortunate to win one in his entire career!

They were told not to cross the streams.

CoverOrange writes:

Ohhhhh, the head coach is paid less. I thought Auburn was head coachless which is pretty appropo if you think about it.

It'll be interesting to see what Gus Malzahn can do with this offense that Tony Franklin couldn't.

Apparently our previous HC wouldn't, sorry just had to say that.

Couchdummy writes:

I tend to view the future Auburn recruiting capabilities a little differently. With Saban recruiting greater numbers of players from other states, Auburn will have better recruiting success within the state of Alabama. Bama has strong prep football programs and a wealth of talent. I dont know how strong the new Auburn staff is other than Trooper Taylor, but Saban cannot take every in-state talent.
