Gruver named player of the week in Northwood League

Tennessee pitcher Steven Gruver recently was named the La Crosse Loggers Player of the Week after getting off to a 3-0 start this season in the Northwood League. Gruver earned his third victory of the year June 23, pitching seven innings while allowing two runs on six hits and striking out seven.

A rising sophomore, Gruver has a 1.95 ERA and has struck out 26 in 27.2 innings and has made five starts. He picked up his first save of the season Saturday after he worked two scoreless innings in the Loggers’ 10-9 victory over the Battle Creek Bombers. The left-hander allowed two hits with two strikeouts.

“My teammates have been making some great plays behind me,” Gruver told La Crosse Loggers.com. “You have to look to your fielders when giving credit. They have been picking me up, and that gives you confidence.

“This is a great experience. We’re getting a lot of work in here. That’s why I wanted to play summer ball, to get more experience and become a better pitcher.”

Gruver was 0-1, with a 5.93 ERA in 18 appearances as a freshman at Tennessee.

It appears the young arms are finally getting the pitching coaching they've not had since Raleigh "benched" Fred in March.

Congrats Steve!!
Pretty neat how good one can pitch when it is about letting your ability play. Steve is going to be a great pitcher before he leaves UT.

An umpire yells "play" ball to start a game.

Not " Time for me to shrink your mental game to the size of a walnut because I am the HC and you were recruited by Rod and shouldn't be here even though you were drafted and can play professionally but suck here because our APR is bad and I only have a half scholarship on the field and though we have turned the corner you won't get to see it because said so and though I would prefer to "text" all this, I cannot because my phone is in the locker room" ball.

Where's my "Raleigh towel"?
