Walters State's Fuesser signs with Pirates

YORK, S.C. — Zac Fuesser was almost certain he would be pitching for the University of Tennessee the next three years.

And for several days over the weekend and into Tuesday, it was looking more and more like he’d be wearing orange when the college baseball season rolled around.

But early Tuesday morning the Pittsburgh Pirates called and made a last-ditch offer to sign the 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher they drafted in the 34th round (1,015th pick overall) in June.

Fuesser graduated from York Comprehensive High School last year and was a 19th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves. They followed him through summer ball and advised Fuesser to go to school and spend a year playing college baseball, which he did at Walters State.

Good luck with pro ball Zac!!

This is BS. If you read the entire article it is a major slap in the face. 125k to pass up SEC baseball!! Probably see 90 k of it which really blows me away.
Every major conference team keeps guys like this. Duke, ECU, Kentucky, heck even MTSU. Says a lot if you look at it. The young man saw his development ending at walter state.
Good thing though the article didn't mention anything about CTR "texting".
Where's my " Raleigh towel".

$125,000 would sound like a lot of money to a guy who has only one year of college under his belt. He also gets $45,000 for future education, which is likely more than he would have gotten in scholarship money if he had played for UT, since most baseball players don't get full scholarships.
His dream is to play pro baseball, not to extend the Todd Raleigh era at UT.
This is just further proof that Todd Raleigh can't recruit well at a major Division 1 university. I realize it is difficult finding/recruiting the players who are really good but still need to develop before they can play pro ball, but it is clear that Todd Raleigh isn't very good at doing that.

You contradicted yourself. You just said that he wanted to play pro ball and that he will get more money for school this way than coming here on scholarship. That has nothing to do with Raleigh's recruiting capabilities. The fact that the kid was so close to coming here until he got his requested amount says that Raleigh can recruit them. You said it yourself that he would get more money for school. That's not Raleigh's fault, but the previous staff.

This surprises me none. There is no reason for any pitching recruit who is any good to show up on our campus next month. They all signed with the understanding that they would be taught by one of the best pitching coaches in the country. That not being the case not only removes almost all sweetness from the offer, but it is a slap in the face directly from Raleigh.

This has everything to do with Ralieghs recruiting capabilities!!!! If Raliegh was a good recruiter he would sell the fact that he could showcase the pitchers talent at UT for 2 or 3 years and against Major division 1 SEC teams, National TV exposure(if he could get into NCAA finals ie.. College World Series) and improve his chances of getting bigger money when he is eligible for the draft again.
