Calkins: Was question to Tebow off limits?

Let's go right to the videotape. The videotape of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow fielding the question at the SEC Media Days.

Reporter: "Are you saving yourself for marriage?"

Tebow: (laughing) "Yes, I am."

Another reporter: "Tim, being a senior, uh, what would you say ...

Tebow: (still laughing) "I think y'all are stunned right now. Y'all can't even ask a question. Look at this. The first time ever. Wow. I was ready for the question. I don't think y'all were, though."

So now you know. The question is, should you know? Should any of us know? Should we praise Tebow? Should we pummel the reporter who asked the question?

His name is Clay Travis and he writes for something called FanHouse.com, but he's not some Internet whack job. He's a lawyer who decided he'd rather write about sports. Hard not to like a guy like that, eh?

I agree....My opinion, regardless of who the player is and what team he plays with....Whether or not he has been with one girl or twenty girls is no one's business....And not the place for the SEC Media days. To me this is a personal issue with Tebow and his beliefs....Those beliefs should be respected and left unexplored by our media garbage folks that have to print some story for the publicity

Should never have asked this question.. Not fair to ask any player period..

Of course it should have been off limits. That reporter should ask the members of the women's basketball team if they are virgins. And if not how many times have they had sex.I wonder what kind of response he would get.
Anyhow i thought today would be the day we won't have a Tim Tebow story to read...Thanks KNS

Does anyone know anything about the "Big Fish" QB transfer rumor?

RJ_Vol writes:

I am not a Florida fan. I am a Tennessee fan. But, I am a fan of the SEC and do not want to see its athletes subjected to intensely personal questions that have no bearing on athletics. That reporter should be banned from all media events. I believe in free speech, but that was over the line. I also believe Tim Tebo had every right to bust the guy in the mouth. Tebo should be given the same respect every other athlete receives. He did nothing to deserve that question. It's just part of the circus that Mike Slive has brought to media days. Mike Slive, as commissioner, needs to address this publicly. Since he seems in the habit lately of keeping discipline, start w/ the putz who asked that question. Strip his credentials and make him serve ten years covering men's synchronized swimming before returning.

Waldorf writes:

I'm pretty certain Tebow didn't care and was probably quite proud to answer it. It's part of who he is and what he believes. In some way, I'd almost be willing to bet he was glad he was asked it.

I think it's funny the two biggest stories of Media Days were 1) who left Tebow off the first team ballot, and 2) someone asked if he was a virgin and the uproar that followed each.

Ironcity writes:

Inappropriate question. Tebow should have said pound sand. Being that he is a nice guy and that he is attempting to promote his beliefs, he answered the question. I have tried to dislike Tebow but its really hard. The only bad thing I can say is that he must have a few screws loose to have wanted to go such dump of a program.

VolnPickwick writes:

Off subject, does anyone know why the jumbotron is under construction? Just saw the picture on UT Sports website, didn't see anything in writing about it, are they enlarging it? Personally don't care if he is a virgin or not, nor do I care who didn't vote for him, their are a whole lot more players in this league than Tebow. Does this bring back memories of Manning's senior year or what. Not to worry, the media will get bored and have someone else in the running for the most overrated trophy in all of sports!

BasketVols writes:

Great puff piece. This would have done well in June but it's almost August and it's time to get to real info. I'm more concerned with whom Tennessee might be getting as a QB transfer, than what Florida's QB has or has not been doing or not doing with his wiener.

Once again, has anyone heard about who this "big fish" transfer is, that Kiffin alluded to in a conversation?

Like it or not 18 is adulthood...21 to drink...That being said, these are athletes that we put in the public spotlight, that we pay dearly to watch perform, and that we use as roles models for the youth of America. With celebrity comes a different set of rules, expectations and outcomes. Be ready at any moment or anything.

Truth is, most kids today don't have the guts to think like Tebow does...

Totally off-limits.
I wonder if Clay Travis will appreciate it if a reporter asks his wife about Clay's sexual stamina or lack thereof and then posts it online?

He is married to a former Titans cheerleader.....I'd say he's doing all right for himself.

I'm having a hard time believing it's Barkley given what has been said because he's under scholarship at USC. If it is him, then we could actually be staring some major trouble in the eyes because coaches cannot contact a player at another school untl he is released (or something like that). It sounds to me as if whoever this player is is someone we can make contact with.

HotlantaVol writes:

ClayTravis.net Check him out guys. He's just a sports fan, and a Tennessee fan at that. It was not meant maliciously at all. Clay called it "the ultimate testament to his (meaning Tebow's) religious faith."

"I asked because I believe it's newsworthy and because, believe it or not, I thought Tim Tebow would answer the question by saying: "Yes, I am." Which is exactly what he did.

"Why did I believe this? Because Tebow lives his faith. And I believe that living his faith is not artificial, he's not pretending to be something he's not. Further, I don't believe that saving yourself for marriage is something to hide from. Not in the evangelical Christian faith that Tim Tebow practices in a Southern church and not in the evangelistic Southern church where I was raised."

To ask any other athlete would be out of bounds, but the way Tebow puts himself and his faith out there for all to see, I think this is a very good question. It's a chance for him to say: "Tim Tebow is Tim Tebow and neither college football nor Florida coeds can change that."

Well, you're on your third name, I'm just on my second. Time to say something f-ed up so I can catch up....

Have you heard about this QB transfer we might be getting? It's driving me nuts. I've heard three different sources say that Matt Barkley from USC is looking to transfer! This must just be a really bad joke...

From what I've heard, he lost the starting job to Corps and is also behind Mustain. This, once again, could be total nonsense, but I've seen this stated three different times.

I'll ask again, how can we know if we're getting a transfer? Coaches can't recruit/talk to players under scholarship from other schools.

You could be right about that. That's what I'm listening to right now. But, I've also heard it from two friends that, and I hate to say this b/c I normally don't post what they say, have always known the deal with UT Sports before media outlets reported on it.

It's all a guess until confirmed Rich. But Bama got a commit from P. Sims, B. Sims and today offered to Strauss. If something is not up with one of the Sims, why offer Strauss?

Bigger_Al writes:

"I liked Sims before he commited to Bama! Jarod Askew was his HS teammate, and Evan Hailes (DT) said Askew was recruiting him to Tenn harder than our coaches. I'm sure he's been doing the same to Sims."

The down side to this:
Askew: "You would start for us this year. I've been running 7 on 7's all summer, and neither one of those guys can see an open receiver if the defense is off the field getting water."
Sims: "Yeah, I can see that, but how are the chicks?"

Now you know why Tebow is in a class by himself: He isn't worried about the chicks!

belayvol writes:

CrimsonViper, what's your take on Bama offering Strauss? This is looking more and more like P. Sims is the object of talk.

sorry to take so long to get back belay.family stuff.
i can't get a fix on anything about p. sims.
rumour is strauss earned the offer last camp.he is still committed to tulane tonite.i kinda would be suprised if it was p.sims instead of b.sims...either way good talking football again!
