BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Southeastern Conference football championship game will remain at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta at least through 2015.
SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said Monday the league has agreed on a five-year extension to keep the game at the Dome.
The game has sold out every year except for 1995, the year after its move to the dome.
Last year’s matchup between Alabama and Florida drew nearly 76,000 fans, the most to attend a sporting event in the Georgia Dome.
The 2009 championship game will be Dec. 5.

Hopefully, we can get there sooner rather than later.

Stinks...First, it's not a neutral site. I'd love to see the SEC title game played outside in the cold of December. Then anyone south of our border would suffer greatly such as LSU, Bama, UF, USC, Ole Miss, Miss St., and Auburn. Afterall, we always play the Gators in September. Turn about is fair play. Places I would recommend are:
Giants Stadium in New Jersey
M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore
Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia
Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo
I'd love to see the spread run in lake effect snow. The 50's are cold in Florida. Let's see how those Florida kids take wind chills below zero.

RJ, let's see how the fans could take it!

Good.Atlanta is a central location and with the rise of Fla.and soon the Vols the Bulldogs won't be the East winner for some time to come so yes it is a neutral site.

This is good for Tennessee in my opinion. As long as home field advantage doesn't go to a team in the West. Especially a team like LSU, Alabama or Auburn. Sucks for the teams from the West if they have to play Georgia in the SEC Championship. The only way it could get better for Tennessee is if the game were played in Knoxville, Nashville or Lexington. Yes, Lexington. Fans would have a shorter trip than any of the teams from the West. Okaaaay theeeen.

Not sure it's much of a home-field advantage. If I'm not mistaken, the tix are split 50-50.

Get a grip, too. It's meant to be humor w/ a little bit of truth. Good luck w/ middle school this year.

LOL. I like the cold...but sometimes even Neyland is a bit much. I remember sitting at the top of the lower deck(south endzone) in November after a rainstorm during the Kentucky game. The wind was ripping in off the river and rain was dripping off the upper deck. It was rough. Still, I'd love to see the Gators up here during that weather. Nonetheless, that's real football weather...not the dome variety.

What?!? Have you seen how we play in that dome? Even in 97 & 98, we nearly gave those games away with 4th comebacks against underwhelming opponents. I would take Tuscaloosa against Bama or the Superdome vs LSU ... we can't be any worse than in the Georgia Dome. :-(

New Orleans would be fun. Miami would be happenin'. But many years, you don't know who's going for sure until a week or so before the game, and Atlanta is pretty much in the middle of the SEC. Pro stadium and weather proof... - Wait, remember the 2008 SEC Hoops Tourney? That place attracts tornados!

I say we just beat Georgia and Florida...that way they don't play in the game at all

the georgia dome is affectionately referred to by gator fans as the "swamp dome".
gator fans are happy with the event in atlanta and have had great success. they are 6-1 in sec championship games in that dome. they also won their second basketball national championship in that dome. lots of good memories.
IMO, it has to be played somewhere and someone will have an advantage. the truth is that Atlanta is still the capital of the South. Atlanta is the proper location for that game IMO. it also screws the ACC who would love to have their game at that location.
as for birmingham.....legion field is a dump. that's #1. the second problem is that both years the game was played there the weather was ugly. cold is not a problem. but, damp and grey....with that dump called legion field.....bad mojo. lastly, when those games were played there, florida played bama both times and were 1-1. but, it may as well have been an alabama home game. the georgia dome has more of a feel of neutrality.
but, you might have to ask arkansas and lsu fans since they are the ones that played georgia in the georgia dome.

the dome is better for fans, better for television, etc.
if you look at the first two championship games.....(and bama played for a national title in 1992), they don't look all that special.
in the dome, it looks like a super bowl.
there's also the SEC fanfare events and hotels, etc, etc, etc.

Driving to Atlanta is much better than almost any other site where the game could be held especially for TN fans. Look at what happened with the SEC basketball tournament this year.

Amendment...LOL. It isn't cold in South Carolina. Now, granted it is north of Florida, but isn't everyone else in the SEC? So yes, it might be colder there relative to Gainesville. But man, I have seen Florida struggle at Vandy in cold weather. Didn't you all struggle at UK in 2007 (W, 45-37)? Didn't you all struggle at Vandy in 2006 (W, 29-25)? Not exactly convincing wins over consistently poor teams. If UF played in Knoxville in November cold to balance the steam bath of September in the Swamp, I'd be happy. Spurrier once complained that he could beat UT when they weren't on turf...He was correct. I state that UF cannot beat UT in November cold on a regular basis. I lived in Florida for two years. People put there heavy coats on when it is fifty-five degrees. Heck, we've been in the fifties two or three times this July just in the TN valley. Mt. Leconte hit 33 this July to break an all-time record low. Just imagine how cold it gets in November - significantly colder than Gainesville. I can guarantee you that your all Florida roster will be freezin' their cans off. Hey, what happened the last time the Vols and Gators suited up late in the season? I was there. You all lost.
RJ_Vol writes:
Amendment. BTW. The "LOL" wasn't directed at your screen name. It was that you inferred that South Carolina was cold...or am I misreading that?

The GA dome is a great site that is central for all schools. If UT takes care of the football and wins the SEC East, the Dawg fans will be selling their tickets from the lottery section up top. I don't a problem with that. That's more tickets for Vol fans, and not a home field advantage.
