Tennessee men’s basketball signee Melvin Goins said he plans to enroll at UT for the start of the second session of summer school in July.

Goins, a 5-foot-11, 195-point guard from Mount San Jacinto Junior College in California, said he’ll stay out West until he finishes up his classes.

“I’ve got a class to finish up here in California before I can leave,’’ said Goins, who plans to finish his math class within the next two weeks. “Once I finish it, I’ll have my associate’s degree.’’

Goins originally hoped to enroll in the first session of summer school and participate in the Pilot Rocky Top League, which begins play June 15 at Bearden High School.

He’s still holding out hope he can make it for the final half of the PRTL season.

Last year, then-newcomers Renaldo Woolridge and Emmanuel Negedu didn’t enroll until the second session of summer school and missed playing in the PRTL.

Goins knows missing the summer league won’t put him behind his teammates, but he had been looking forward to interacting with the Vols’ fans and showing his skills.

Goins started at Ball State two seasons ago and made the Mid-American Conference all-freshman team before transferring to Mt. San Jacinto.

The 21-year-old Goins earned Foothill Conference Player of the Year honors last season, averaging 17.4 points, five assists and two steals per game.

Still Looking: Tiffany Carpenter, UT director of public relations, said the school is still looking into a potential violation committed when rising senior Wayne Chism appeared in YouTube videos with a local businessman.

He made about two dozen videos that consisted of him acting silly in a variety of reality TV-themed skits.

Chism was ordered to take the videos down when the men’s basketball office learned of them through phone calls from concerned fans.
