Source: Jurick to transfer

Tennessee redshirt freshman men's basketball player Phillip Jurick is expected to transfer out of UT in the coming weeks, according to a source close to the program.

Jurick, a 6-foot-10 post from East Ridge High School, is not currently enrolled in classes at UT and was not among the Vols' players made available for selection at the Pilot Rocky Top League draft Wednesday night.

UT coach Bruce Pearl could not be reached for comment, but Pearl said in past interviews there was a chance Jurick could elect to transfer because he was not happy with his playing opportunities.

Jurick's decision alleviates a potential issue should rising senior Tyler Smith elect to return for his final year of eligibility. UT lost a scholarship for the coming season as a result of its APR rating.

Tyler only has 5 days to decide, so this seems like a timely announcement.

Go Vols!

like jurick really mattered if he came back or not. jurick can hit the road. he didnt even give pearl a chance to let him place. he's better off at a d-2 school with a "i'm better then this additude". farewell pal

Maybe he'll go to UTC and room with BJ.

I really believe if he was good enough, he would be playing.

jgvol8 writes:

Who cares? If he was good, he would have played last year. CBP has shown he is not afraid to play a true freshman is they are good enough.

jclowers writes:

It get tired of reading these stories where people bash the kid for looking for playing time elsewhere. He's a 6'10-6'11 post player who is limited offensively. In high school he was a great shot blocker. Here he would undoubtedly be forced to play the 5. He has SR Wayne Chism, JR Brian Williams and Soph Emanuel Negedu in front of him. Negedu showed a lot of promise late in the season. Plus he has Freshman Kenny Hall who is going to come in and push for playing time at the 4 and 5. Pretty obvious there wouldn't be any playing time here. This could be 75 percent his decison 25 percent UT's. Smart decision on his part he can go to a D2 school or a mid-major D1 (would have to sit out 1) and be a solid backup one year and a starter the next.

cobbwebb writes:

to say this kid is no good because he was given a redshirt is ignorant! many college athletes take a redshirt their first season and become very good players! we all knew this kid was a project! i am a huge pearl fan, and many of you will call me a troll, or a non fan, but i dont care! i put this on the coaching staff! it is now time to start developing players! hopson will tell the tale this year! we shall see if this staff is as dedicated as when they were first brought to our university! my heart tells me pearl will keep this program rolling along, but my gut tells me we will never be a consistent top 25 team! i hope my heart is right, and the feeling in my gut is just gas! GO VOLS!!!!

loserswithsocks.com called this one a while back and they also said that Tyler is staying. I know, I know. It doesn't sound like a very reliable source, but they were the 1st to announce Scotty Hopson was a Vol amongst other b-ball related stories. If that site says he's coming back, then I think he's coming back. However, NBADraft.net currently has Tyler going #29 to the Lakers. That is a late 1st round projection so we'll see. I just hope he makes it in the league whenever he decides to come out. Jurick was highly rated coming out of HS so maybe he'll get some minutes elsewhere, but he probably would've worked his way into the rotation eventually had he stayed. Oh well, good luck young man.

Good question. Let us know if you find out.

You have to ask why did Pearl even spent the time and resources to recruit this Kid. Best of luck to him, but I questioned this recruitment during the time Pearl alledgely got kicked out of his High School game, I believe. Would UConn, North Carolina or Kansas recruited him? Probably not, then why UT? I just question some of the guys Pearl recruits. Why can't UT's recruiting standards be just like the fore mentioned schools? Then maybe this is the best UT can get since it's really a Football school.

You think he could have posted those kind of numbers playing in a City where the competition might be better like Atl, Memphis or Baltimore? Nothing against him because he was offered and you can't blame him for accepting. It just didn't work out for him. Doesn't mean he can't play for someone else. What I'm trying to get us to see is that we should be recruiting on the same level like the other big dogs.

Of course the roster needs top 20 national recruits. But it is good to try and build a program by signing top players within the state.

Agree TJ, Can't blame a kid for wanting more PT. It would be hard for any 6'11" big man in Pearl's system. Unless your Dwight Howard.
He needs to be in more of a half court set style of play not a motion offense at break neck speed.
Good Luck young man, hope you find what you are looking for. You still have a lot of life ahead of you!!!

The top players in the State are in the West. Again, nothing against Jurrick wish him well on his next endeavour, but I questioned from the beginning if he was D1 material.

Marc - Oliver Purnell is one of the most respected Coaches in the NCAA. If what you say is true then lets just hope Phillip grows up and realize some things about his potential before it's wasted. Ignoring a coach who has traveled to evaluate you and perhaps offer you a scholarship is kind of immature.

I love UT so don't take this the wrong way. At this time UT is not in the same league with the teams you mentioned. Those schools can focus solely on the top twenty players in the country and know they can get four of them. Those schools don't have to take projects. Some of those schools can get top 200 kids to walk on. I hope that someday before I die that UT becomes one of those schools but for now we have to take projects and some risks. The reality is some of those risks (Jurick, Ramar Smith,West) don't work out.
