Hey, Tennessee football fan, feel any better now?
If I were composing a list of the 10 most gut-wrenching defeats of the Phillip Fulmer era, the 6-3 loss at Alabama in 2005 would be on there somewhere.
It's gone now. Wiped off the books.
Vacated is the proper term in NCAA lingo.
The Crimson Tide is vacating 21 wins 2005-07 as punishment for athletes abusing the textbook-distribution policy.
So, we set the Way-Back Machine for Oct. 22, 2005, in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
It's like Corey Anderson never fumbled as he rushed toward the Alabama end zone. Picture him going in standing up and spiking the football for a 10-3 UT lead.
It's like Brodie Croyle never hit D.J. Hall with a third-and-8 bomb for 43 yards into Tennessee territory as the clock ticked down. Picture the pass sailing high out of bounds.
It's like Jamie Christensen never kicked the game-winning field goal with 13 seconds to play. Picture wide right.
If only you could believe in your heart of hearts that textbooks had anything in the world to do with the heartburn outcome.
Maybe if safety Roman Harper had separated the football from Anderson's grip by swatting him across the wrist with Economics 101 instead of a good hard lick.
The 2006 game was unaffected because the Vols won, 16-13. Arian Foster dived over the pile with 3:28 left for the go-ahead score.
But if Foster had, say, fumbled as Anderson did the year before? No problem. Eventually. A 13-9 Alabama win would have been tossed out this week.
One of the two on-field wins Alabama didn't have to give up in the three-year span was a 41-17 triumph over the Vols in 2007.
Shortly before kickoff - a tone-setting onside kick that Alabama recovered - the school announced the suspension of five players, including starters Antoine Caldwell, Marlon Davis and Glen Coffee. This was the first whiff of the textbook investigation that came to judgment last week, 20 months later.
Seeing hard-gained results over Tennessee vanish is not unprecedented for the Crimson Tide. It first happened in 1993.
The final score was 17-17, after Alabama scored a touchdown and then a two-point conversion with 21 seconds to play at Legion Field. It was a tie but sure felt like a loss to UT fans who could virtually taste their first win over the Tide since 1985.
Alabama later forfeited the tie, as well as nine wins, because star defensive back Antonio Langham had nefarious dealings with an agent in the previous offseason.
Compared to NCAA violations involving agents and buying recruits (Albert Means), textbook distribution seems petty, a misdemeanor.
Ray Melick of the Birmingham News suggested the most appropriate penalty:
Require the athletes to read every textbook he or she distributed and write a detailed report on each.
Waiver Wire: Does college basketball have a waiver wire now?
A couple of SEC roster movements this week raise the issue. There's no salary cap but there is a scholarship cap.
On Thursday, Tyler Smith announced he's coming back to UT for his senior year rather than test the NBA draft. The following day, the speculated Philip Jurick transfer became official.
Thus the Vols are snug at 12 scholarships, their maximum due to an APR penalty.
Coach Bruce Pearl's statement that Jurick is expected to transfer to Chattanooga State Community College and might one day return to UT further suggests a major-league context. It's as if Jurick is being sent down to Double-A to improve his game and could in time be recalled.
The revolving door at Wildcat Lodge has been spinning as new Kentucky coach John Calipari clears out Billy Gillispie players to make room for his blue-chip signees.
This week Matt Pilgram became the latest Wildcat "waived" to get down to the scholarship limit and all indications are that Kevin Galloway will be next.
Ex-Trojan Horses?: The turmoil in Southern Cal basketball is impacting the SEC.
Renardo Sidney, a 6-foot-10 McDonald's All-American and former USC commitment, signed with Mississippi State last month after the Trojans curtailed their relationship with him.
Now, point guard Lamont Jones has been given his release in the wake of coach Tim Floyd's resignation. There's a fair chance Jones lands at Florida, according to the Gainesville Sun.
The Gators need a point guard since Nick Calathes left to play in Greece.

NCAA penalty is meaningless. Why even bother?

I'm glad Alabama was given 21 losses in a day. I hate them, and think they cheat more than anyone. I like the label: CHEATERS.
Go Vols!
-0 Fulmer cup points under Kiffin

be careful.......
im just sayin
kabzs writes:
The guys at the NCAA who dream up these worthless vacations of ballgames..are wimps. Knock the snot out of the cheaters and they will change. Alabama was still under probation from the Means case when these violations took place. What is probation good for if not to put teeth into the next round of punishment!
jimvolfan writes:
Under Kiffin, I don't see us being any better.
I'll be glad when we get a coach who has ethics and doesn't sound like the schoolyard idiot.
vol_chaz writes:
Alabama has been on probation, i heard today, 11 out of the last 18 years. Parole Tide!

Fulmer 12 - Tide 3. Not a bad run.
Time to start a new one this year.

Utterly meaningless ruling.
vol98champ writes:
The only good thing that comes out of this is that Alabama has to be very careful for the next 5 years. My only question about all of this is how come Alabama "only" had information from 2005 to 2007. Maybe someone just started keeping records.

I'm amazed they could sell a textbook in Tuscaloosa.
txvolsfan writes:
You are 100% incorrect!!!
Name one unethical thing that Kiffin has done?
How can you judge a coach who has not coached one game?
txvolsfan writes:
TJ,
Does this mean they have a 23 game losing streak???
GO VOLS

Also why would any basketball player go play for Eddie Munster? He had one good recruiting class and since then has done absolutely nothing.
Ask Jai Lucas what kind of coach he is!!!

AMEN to that! The NCAA can take away the win, but the fact remains that on the field, they won and any true UT fan can't deny that.

It's funny even when bama wins they lose. Much like the students if they think cheating is the way to get ahead. Kind of nostalgic.
VolMoment writes:
jimvolfan why don't you change your name to antivolfan and go join the legions of Bama fans who had rather criticize Fulmer for reporting the truth than say Fulmer is right we have become a school known for cheating rather than wins. They are holding on to some guy legacy who also cheated in recruiting and they think all of his wins were legit.
TommyJack writes:
All of this getting stale. Let's tee up the hog bladder.
Ringleader writes:
Somewhere, you missed the NCAA ruling. Bama has to vacate the Win, but it does not convert to a Loss. UT contines to have the Loss in the records. The only record affected is Bama's.
gmoneyvol writes:
So Bama is 0-12 now? lol....
gbeejr#1354500 writes:
These penalties are a joke. May look like on paper that the NCAA really did something, but in reality it was nothing. Scholly's are the key and parole bama lost none. As I posted a day or so ago, you got to give Commissioner Slime a lot of credit on this one. I'm sure he campaigned vigorously from his B'ham office to the NCAA in mitigating these violations. You would not have seen Slime beg-off if a lesser program was involved.

every time the blackboard filled up, they erased and started over. this is bama we're talking about, really...
the10sevol writes:
they weren't all coloring books, some of them had those folded-up "pop ups" that create 3-d structures when the page is opened. you know, like a hallmark card. my favorite is page 4, where coach bear rises up to pose as "touchdown jesus".
abnermc writes:
Their violation here is no different than giving recruits money: give them books to sell & get MONEY. Some of these got as much as $3000 for the books.200 athletes, in 15 sports & the university didn't know! LOL
stevefrommemphis writes:
Alabama has now been put on probation (Probation # 3) for violations which occurred during a period of time when Alabama was on probation (Probation # 2) for committing violations which occurred during a period of time when Alabama was on probation (Probation #1). Two separate transgressions WHILE ON PROBATION FOR OFFENSES BEGINNING AS FAR BACK AS 1993.
THE ALABAMA FREEDOM CLOCK
http://spuat.wickens.ws/
The ALABAMA FREEDOM CLOCK has not yet been reset to account for the latest probation. This clock was in perpetual countdown from February 1, 2002 through January 31, 2007, the period of probation #2 (during which the textbook scandal occurred).
http://audrumline.tripod.com/bammerha...
Need an update to the above web site also....
February 1, 2002, when Probation #2 was announced
"They were absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun. These violations are some of the worst, most serious that have ever occurred," said Thomas Yeager, chairman of the infractions committee. If Alabama is found guilty of further violations during the probationary period, Yeager suggested the death penalty -- the elimination of a sports program -- could result. "God forbid, there's ever another appearance -- ever," Yeager said. "Should there be one -- particularly within the five-year period -- I don't know what's left."
My conclusion: ALABAMA SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED THE DEATH PENALTY.
Typical Alabama fan's conclusion: PHIL FULMER is responsible for ALL ALABAMA TRANSGRESSIONS.
