Vols holding out for elite quarterbacks

Several top prospects Tennessee wanted at the key position have committed elsewhere

Even a potentially dire circumstance at quarterback hasn't changed the recruiting standards for Tennessee's new football coaching staff.

The Volunteers are the only Southeastern Conference program with no quarterbacks still enrolled from the last three signing classes, and they have none publicly committed for 2010.

But impressive roster numbers don't mean anything "if you don't have good players," UT assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron said recently.

We may very well end up with a good QB. But it will takes several years to over not signing and developing QB's these last few seasons. I want to see how much LK gets out of JC before I believe in his evaluating QB's. Last two OC's did not think JC could get it done. We shall see or better yet maybe KNS should do a poll. Go Vols

If stars are under rated did we really have a good recruiting class? We did not address our needs. If you could field a team with two & three stars and I field one with four and five stars I would like my chances. Tebow should have one. Go Vols

It is very possible although I dont believe we had a bad class. Just saying that not all players have to be 5* recruits.

I would say though that if I did some research I could build a very successful team out of the players in FB last year using 3* and below.

What I am saying though is that even with the "stars" there are diamonds in the rough to be found. For every player that is a good 5* all the way down there is equal or more players with the same ranking out of HS that doesnt live up to expectations.

While I feel that Crompton will play better.... remember he is a 5*...... Jimmy Clausen is tearing it up as well..... Just Sayin!

Its still puzzling as to why JC, the Vol QB., saw little or no action at that position when Cutcliff was head of Vol offense in his last year. One would have thought that JC would have played with regularity in order to be ready for last season's head QB....instead of the disaster that he became...and it started with opener at UCLA. Could it be that JC is one of the excellent practice players...but come game time for some reason he loses his ability to perform. Cut must have been convinced that the kid did not have what it took to be future full time Vol Qb. This remains a mystery to many Vol fans to this day.

In an ideal world, a verbal commit should be the end of the recruiting, but that's not current reality. It would seem impossible that we signed Bryce Brown and Janzen Jackson because they had committed to Miami and LSU, and many folks assume a recruit is lost forever once they verbally commit. If that were true, we'd have Nunes at Qb now. Don't touch that dial (or remote).

Do not think we should offer scholarships to convicted felons. He is a dual threat not a drop back like LK wants to sign. Go Vols

Rozier and Lamiason will both be here. Look for either Scroggins/Legaux; and possibly Brunetti Rettig/Strauss to commit,two/three of those five.

Kiffin, and Chaney(mainly) will get the best out of these q.b.'s ;Brees and Orton didnt turn out that shabby !!

BINGO !!! I really like Rettig too,him and Brunetti/Legaux/Strauss.

I feel we end up getting Rettig/Brunetti,Scroggins or Legaux, that will be a good choice of q.b.'s to work with. Along with Stevens,Rozier and Lamiason.

About the star thing, I go to a d2 school in at. Our qb is a comparisson to chase daniels at mizzou. He was the MVP and starting qb for the tx vs. La all star game. Yet had no d1 scholarship offers. Last season as a sophmore he was the first player in history of American football to pass for over 400 yrds and rush for over 200 yrds in a single game. He also led the conference in rushing and nation intotal offense. Stars don't always mean everything.

Maybe he's through acting like a kid but Cameron Newton at 6”5” and 240 lbs QB and a 5 star out of high school, I can assure you he has the arm strength to do what is needed, especially after reviewing his high school films again. Also I would like to see us get James Carmon, DT 6’7” 370 lbs and Wayne Dorsey, DE or DT 6’8” 250 lbs. After loosing 12 players, IMO we need depth that can play now or at least provide strong experienced depth. The QB at 6’4” – 6’8”, 220 lbs. – 250 lbs. just doesn’t seem to be out there this year. The only one committed to Oklahoma. I know nothing is signed yet bet the rest just don’t seem to be what we’re looking for or we would have taken 5 star Tajh Boyd at 6’1”, 210 lbs., and with 4.6 speed last year. Maybe next year.

Our OL situation is so dismal that is doesn't realy matter who our QB is going to be. We lose 4 senior OL's after this year and five reserve OL's have left the team in the past five months. We have one OL commit for 2010 and only two signed in the 2009 class. If someone doesn't fix this in a hurry the 2010 post game attire for our RB's and QB's will be body bags.

Bud, I don't know if your being serious or not but once your "son" gets that growth spurt to atleast 6'2 or 6'4 then were talking about a legit QB prospect.

I would guess that most elite QBs will wait to see the Vols play a few games before they consider commitments.

Also, doubt if Kiffin & Co worry too much about early commitments. As we saw last Jan and Feb, if we want 'em we get 'em. What happens on February 3, 2010 is all that matters.

True, not all players have to be 5* recruits.

History tells us, however, if your class includes 20-25 4-5* athletes in lieu of 2-3* guys, you'll be well ahead of the curve.

Yea I wonder about JC playing good in practise and really struggling in games. He definitely was highly ranked out of high school but obviously has not lived up to the hype. Clausen had an interview last year and he basically said that JC doesn't throw it to the ground in practise. His last game was Kentucky his stats were 6 for 8 101 yards (63 yard bomb to Moore) and did not turn the ball over, 8 rushes for 32 yards (including a nice run for a first down). 101 yards passing might do against Kentucky but definitely not upper tier teams in the SEC. Maybe Gran and Kiffin can get a good year out of him. I also wondered why Cutcliffe didn't play JC in 2007 more. Maybe he did see tendencies he didn't like about slow reads, bobbled snaps and just plain inaccurate with the ball. New coaches and perhaps a totally different JC we will see. But if he struggles I think we will see NS play very soon.
