TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama and San Jose State will meet on the football field for the first time in the 2010 season opener.
The teams will play on Sept. 4 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It will be the first game after the stadium’s two-year renovation project to the south end zone, which is expected to push the capacity over 100,000.
It will be the Crimson Tide’s first game against a team from California since playing UCLA in the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
It was previously announced that Alabama will host Penn State the following week.
Georgia State will play at Alabama on Nov. 20 in its first season in a game that will mark Bill Curry’s return.
Curry, Georgia State’s coach, said playing at Alabama — where he coached the Crimson Tide to a SEC championship — “quickens the pace of everything we are doing.”
Curry coached at Alabama from 1987 through 1989. Alabama won the 1989 SEC championship.
The Tide’s other nonconference for for 2010 is Duke.

Well, they want to be sure they win at least one game! But, San Jose State may be favored in this one! At least by some of us!

Not like we Vol fans can say much with UT-Martin on our future schedule. Is it too late for Hammy to back out of that? I really wish we wouldn't schedule lower division schools. There's no benefit to it.

I'll agree with that too. It's not that big of a deal scheduling weaker opponents, but going the subdivision route is not appealing to me.

Bleed orange completely but with westerny ky (although they moved up this yr) on our schedule this yr and UTM on it next yr, I'm gonna leave bammer alone on this one. I will say this, EVERYONE is putting more and more patsies on their schedules now days. If u get to count it as a win even though it's against a FBS (or whatever it is now) why not do it? The SEC is brutal enough but I still don't wanna see more than one game like this on the schedule...jmo.

They're just kidding about scheduling GA St. aren't they?

No I think they are doing it to bring back Bill Curry and honor him with a smack down....
Like an earlier poster said we will be quiet on this one,but Ga st did just start their futbol program.

Alabama has now been put on probation (Probation # 3) for violations which occurred during a period of time when Alabama was on probation (Probation # 2) for committing violations which occurred during a period of time when Alabama was on probation (Probation #1). Two separate transgressions WHILE ON PROBATION FOR OFFENSES BEGINNING AS FAR BACK AS 1993.
THE ALABAMA FREEDOM CLOCK
http://spuat.wickens.ws/
The ALABAMA FREEDOM CLOCK has not yet been reset to account for the latest probation. This clock was in perpetual countdown from February 1, 2002 through January 31, 2007, the period of probation #2 (during which the textbook scandal occurred).

Leftover material from probation #2. The drawing of Bear as Moses in the lower left corner is particularly funny.
February 1, 2002, when Probation #2 was announced, Thomas Yeager, chairman of the NCAA Infractions Committee, said:
"They were absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun. These violations are some of the worst, most serious that have ever occurred." If Alabama is found guilty of further violations during the probationary period, Yeager suggested the death penalty -- the elimination of a sports program -- could result. "God forbid, there's ever another appearance -- ever," Yeager said. "Should there be one -- particularly within the five-year period -- I don't know what's left."
My conclusion: ALABAMA SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED THE DEATH PENALTY.
Typical Alabama fan's conclusion: PHIL FULMER is responsible for ALL ALABAMA TRANSGRESSIONS.

I figured they wanted another dose of Utah on national TV.

I think strength of schedule should play a major role in BCS ranking and bowl selection. Every school should apply to an NCAA/BCS committee at the beginning of each season to be eligible for a BCS Bowl. Your strength of schedule should pass a minimum test or you are not eligible for BCS consideration. If you schedule a team from a lower division you receive negative points. That would eliminate the bull crup that we have been seeing in recent BCS bowl games. Some teams make it too far without being tested during the season. Then they face a real team, like Florida or LSU over the past few years and the fans are forced to watch a beatdown. I am a true Vol fan and recognize how good some of the other SEC teams have been and we have a lot of ground to make up. But, keeping the national title within the SEC is a source of pride for all SEC fans no matter who you like or dislike. I will enjoy beating Florida again but I want to do it because we get better, not they are getting weaker. We dont want to be like the big 10.
That said I can't wait for Sept 5th. Granted it is Western Ky but I am ready for a new chapter of Vol Football.

this is the 1st non D1 school UT has played since The Citadel in 1983...All the other SEC schools litter their schedule with them every year while we play Notre Dame, UCLA, Syracuse, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon, UNC, Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas Tech, NC State, etc etc etc.
If we're going to play one every once in a while, at least we're throwing the bone to an in-state school so UT and Tennessee get to keep ALL the money!

Exactly volboy. UT has always had a reputation for playing good non-conference schedules (Notre Dame, Miami, UCLA, etc) unlike some of our SEC brethren. (You might want to check out Ole Miss's NCS this year who I think has two D2 schools on the schedule. I think it's rated as the worst in the conference just ahead of Arkansas.) If we schedule a clinker like UTM every now and then, I have absolutely no problem with it. We're just catching up to the rest of the conference in that department.
