Greeson: Which new SEC coach will last?

Less than three months from the start of the college football season, the three first-year SEC head coaches have paced, prowled and propelled themselves and their programs into perplexing positions of uncertainty.

And that's not a bad thing.

Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, Auburn's Gene Chizik and Tennessee's Lane Kiffin are first-year SEC coaches because 2008 was at best a forgettable experience for each program.

Your answer is exactly what Greesom said at the end of his article. Vol fans got exactly what they asked for, big change, only time will tell if the change was really for the better.

I am looking for good things to come from our current staff and I tend to think it will happen quicker than most people think. By some chance that it doesn't work out that way, CLK would be the 2nd person out of K-ville, Hammy would surely be the first. Seems that Hammy has put himself all-in with this move. If it works out, Hammy and CLK are hero's...if it doesn't work, well, I think we all know the rest of the story.

I do think that Kiffin gets the shortest amount of time for a turnaround. We didn't pay $6 million buyout and open up the check book to pay for an expensive staff for anything less than an SEC title. I think he has 5 years to achieve that, assuming we show continuous improvement up to that point. If he doesn't win the SEC in that time, he's gone. That's just the business reality of the game these days.

CLEMSONVOL716WASBANNED writes:

lol..we have a chicken in here spewing his trash again..you know the kind of fan that crows because "his" team has beaten UT 2 times in almost 20 years. They can't even beat Clemson on a regular basis and we know how bad Clemson has been the last few years.

Just goes to prove that you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shite.

Agree with this, except if TN isn't in contention or doesn't at least win the SEC E in 3 years, he will definitely be on the hot seat.

Mullen can probably stay as long as he wants...

john1998 writes:

The strongest known job security Kiffin has right now is a complete lack of leadership at the University level. Anything else that impacts his tenure is speculative.

Hamilton has no direct UT boss (not counting the donors), and that gives him (and by extension, Kiffin) more leeway.

New presidents often want their own athletic directors, however. When Simek is replaced (or codified as system president)don't be shocked to see the new guy want his own AD pretty quickly.

That won't be a great sign for Kiffin.

Seems that every coach the chickens have hired was going to be the great saviour in Columbia, Spurrier is only there becuase of the ties to and the chance to play golf at Augusta National and to build SS jr's resume'as offensive coordinator....and what a statement the resume' makes..."We were 6-0 and ranked in the top 10 in the nation"....that was until Vandy came to Columbia for homecoming, then we lost the last 6 in a row....it seems the chicken curse still haunts every coach that works in Columbia.

Fact is, chickens are a "never have been" team and will remain as a "never will be" team.

I am going to Columbia this weekend, does anyone know where I can find a good full service gas station where I can get my windshield washed and tire pressure checked...Figured it might be a good chance to get some autographs while they pump my gas.

I can agree with you on everything except the whole autograph thing. Why would you want a Gaymecock autograph? I mean, how many of them do you ever see make it in the NFL? It would just be a waste of perfectly good ink and paper... .

Good point 4ID, but I thought it might be a good investment. You know, here is how it could happen:

The local paper runs this headline "LOCAL GAS STATION ATTENDENT MAKES THE NFL" The chances of that happening are slim to none, but if it did, I would have his autograph and could sell it on eBay, It might even be enough $$ to help pay for some textbooks for the Bammer football players so they don't have to steal them and get the death penalty from the NCAA

.

CLEMSONVOL716WASBANNED writes:

I could also use the money from eBay sales to help pay the bail and attorney retainer fees in Gainesville.

Had nothing to do with stomping yours in the Georgia Dome last year. And, we won't get the death penalty. Worry about your own program that's floundering.

No, but that's a pretty good idea for a "doldrums" article. I bet JA is brainstorming that one already.

AllVol2008#1353998 writes:

Man, it is the doldrums, ain't it? God, this is the most miserable time of year.

As to the article (I live in Chattanooga, and found it less than titillating in this morning's paper), I'll be willing to bet that Monte Knox Kiffin will remember fondly his high school days in Knoxville, Tennessee, if not his graudation from UT, itself.

Man, you got that right. You know, I wouldn't know how to get to a Florida or Alabama or Georgia site if my life depended on it. Who gives a sh-t?

That these a-sh-l-s keep showing up here just shows how deeply UT is into their pea brains. No other explanation.
