Sites for SEC basketball tournaments announced

The SEC on Wednesday announced sites for several men’s and women’s basketball tournaments.

The men’s tournament will be played in Nashville in 2013 at the Sommet Center.

The 2014 men’s tournament will be at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

The women’s tournament will be held at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga., in 2010, 2013 and 2014.

The women will play at the Sommet Center in Nashville in 2011 and 2012.

“Both are fantastic venues for college basketball,’’ UT women’s coach Pat Summitt told The Tennessean, “and these locations are accessible to fans throughout the SEC.

“I am confident that women’s basketball fans will continue to turn out in great numbers to support the league.’’

The men’s tournament has been previously announced for Nashville in 2010, Atlanta in 2011 and New Orleans in 2012.

The tournament has visited each of the announced cities previously. However, the 2012 men’s tournament will not be played in the Louisiana Superdome, but in the 17,000-seat New Orleans Arena.

The men’s tournament began in 1933, with a hiatus from 1953-78. It has played in 11 cities, including Knoxville. Alumni Gym was host four times: 1936-37 and 1939-40. Thompson-Boling Arena staged the tournament in 1989.

The other men’s sites and number of events: Atlanta (12); Birmingham (6); Baton Rouge (2); Lexington (3); Louisville (12); Memphis (2); Nashville (4); New Orleans (2); Orlando (1); Tampa (1).

The women’s tournament has been held annually since 1980 with 13 host cities. Knoxville was host in 1980 and 1983 at Stokely Athletics Center.

The other 12 sites: Albany, Ga. (6); Athens, Ga. (2); Baton Rouge (1); Chattanooga (7); Columbus, Ga. (1); Duluth, Ga. (1), Greenville, S.C. (1); Lexington (1); Oxford, Miss. (1); Memphis (1); Nashville (3); North Little Rock, Ark. (3).

I dont understand why UNC doesn't have message boards. Go to your own site kid and stay there. Will you be around during football season? Or will you disappear like the rest of the ACC in sports other then Basketball.

Don't you ever get tired of flapping your gums and showing your ignorance?

FYI, at one time the SEC did hold the basketball tournament at the home sites of different schools and Rupp Arena was one of the venues. TBA also hosted the men's tournament, if I remember correctly, in 1988.

The conference decided to move the games to neutral courts to level the playing court as much as possible.

Nashville is the best place for it. The Georgia dome is a dumpster. That place sucks. Why don't they try to get the games in Philips Arena? That would be 100 times better

I live in Atlanta, but I refuse to go to basketball games in the Georgia Dome. Right next to it is a state of the art basketball/hockey arena, which would be perfect. But they would rather have a 1/4 full quiet dome than a sold out 22K seat aloud arena. Sheesh!!

You deliver that logic and then refer to other posters as childish clowns ? "Inside [our] heads ?" Please. TarHoleDrools likes to spar, and he apparently finds what he wants here. He's pathetic and doesn't even realize it---and that's funny. TarHoleDrools knows that truth has nothing to do with it---how'd YOU miss that ?

alright so lets see, you are the only one who thinks this. I mean the experts think we will have the same amount of teams ranked to start the season and our vols right behind your tarheels. And no other acc team above us?

Nashville is the perfect location! The Kentucky fans love to come down and the Tennessee fans are all over Nashville and is the largest fan base in town. (sorry Vandy) The Alabama FANS don't care beacause they will be on probation with the football team.

I love "fans" that say I love my school in basketball, but I like other football teams. (e.g. Kentucky Fans love Big Blue in basketball, but Tennessee in Football). Isn't that like being bi-sexual?

Very true. There are NBA arena in Memphis, Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, and New Orleans. Surely they could work with the teams to get a weekend in the Arena. It would be a neutral court plus a perk for the players to play in an NBA arena. I have also heard that many players have a hard time adjusting to the lighting coming from places like the Georgia Dome rather than a place made for basketball.

Responding to fans of other programs who truly want to talk sports is one thing; trading childish shots with outright trolls like THR and most of the Florida bunch is foolish, IMHO, and not at all entertaining to me. The only positive recent development on the board is the relative silence of the UM lopers. But, as you say, to each his own.
