Tennessee sophomore Darren Renwick has reached the quarterfinals of the British Amateur Championship Match Play at the Formby Golf Club in Formby, England.
In the first of two matches Thursday, Renwick beat Tommy King of Sudbury, 7 and 5 in the third round. In the round of 16, he defeated American Steve Ziegler, 1 up.
Friday's action begins at 3:30 a.m. ET with Renwick facing Mark Hillson from Craigielaw. The winner advances to the 8 a.m. ET semifinals against the winner of Italian Matteo Manassero and hometown hero Tommy Fleetwood.
The 36-hole final is Saturday.
The first stage of the Championship involved 288 players each of whom played two rounds of 18 holes. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place compete in the match play stage of the Championship, which commenced on Wednesday. Each match consists of one round of 18 holes except the Final, which will be over 36 holes.
