DT Hailes just spectator at UT camp

Defensive tackle Evan Hailes from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Va., visited Tennessee this weekend but didn’t participate in the camp.

The 6-foot-1, 305-pound Hailes has an offer from the Vols and wanted to see UT in person.

“It’s a laid-back place,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of things going on at once.

“The coaches seem real intense about this team, starting off everything brand new. It felt like a good atmosphere to be in.”

Hailes will have two connections to UT this fall.

His former teammate, linebacker Jerod Askew, signed with the Vols in February and plans to begin summer school next month.

Hailes is also a cousin of senior linebacker Rico McCoy.

Hailes said he spent time talking to McCoy about playing for the Vols.

“He just told me to see how I like it and ask myself could I be there or not,” Hailes said.

Hailes is considering three schools: UT, Virginia Tech and Penn State.

Hailes said he plans to visit Penn State on Friday. He said he hopes to be ready to make a decision soon after that trip.

“It would get things out of the way,” he said. “I could just focus on my senior year and I would already know where I’m going.”

Hailes insisted he doesn’t have a leader. He said he’ll commit once he finds a school that makes him completely comfortable.

“After I compare all of them and see who’s a better fit for me then that’s when I’ll make my choice,” he said.

Make the right choice, young man.

That's the way I'd do it if I were a player.... check out the schools, figure out where I could see myself fit in the best, commit before my senior year, and just have fun the rest of the year. Recruiting has to get old after a while for these guys; some of them like it a little too much though.

I'd rather know where I'm going as soon as possible so I could be able to let loose my senior year and let all the other schools know I was firm and to stop calling me.

When players use terms such as good and not great and says "there aren't a lot of things going on at once", those statements lead me to believe he is going elsewhere. Just an opinion, I hope I am wrong.

I think you mean Blacksburg.

Somebody tell this kid that its the summer semester, of course there isn't alot of stuff going on. Come to UT, be a Vol, out of those 3 schools, you'd think our situation at D-line, plus a chance to shine in the SEC, would tip the scales in our favor...

From what I have heard, him and Askew were tight and he is leaning towards Tenn. Of course as we all know, nothing is final until that paper is signed.

ArealVolFan writes:

Florida self-reported two secondary violations involving and both involved improper contact with recruits, according to a report by The Orlando Sentinel.

The reality is that secondary violations are pretty common, and all schools self-report them with the hope of avoiding major trouble with the NCAA.

It's just that some of these snafus are more public than others. Florida's two secondary violations came to light after The Orlando Sentinel filed an open records request for primary or secondary violations involving the Gators over a 12-month span.

Found this interesting. I know we have had more but inappropriate contact with players sounds worse than anything we have had. Just goes to show though every school does this and the morons that think the ones that have happened here at UT since Kiffin's arrival need to wake up and realize that they just don't matter.

Since the article said he was interested in Va Tech and Penn St, the relevant towns are Blacksburg, VA and State College, PA. Lynchburg is the home of Liberty (Falwell) University and College Station is the home of Texas A&M.
