Rubio hired as recruiting intern

Tennessee’s football recruiting ties to South Florida keep getting stronger.

University of Central Florida director of player personnel Steve Rubio will join Tennessee’s staff as a recruiting intern, likely next week, UT confirmed Wednesday.

Rubio, a native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., spent a year as a volunteer assistant coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, where he played football, before attending UCF.

While with the Golden Knights, Rubio spent three years as an equipment manager before spending the 2007 season as UCF’s graduate assistant for recruiting and operations.

He later became the school’s full-time director of player personnel.

By NCAA rules, only UT’s nine assistant coaches and head coach Lane Kiffin are allowed to visit prospects.

Other staff members can be involved in the recruiting process, such as arranging visits and contacting high school coaches, as long as they do so from campus and follow all applicable NCAA rules.

Rubio replaces Paul Gonnella, who came to UT from North Carolina early this year. The Vols also are in the process of hiring a director of player personnel, a position that will replace the director of high school relations.

Do you mean great people like Mark Smith? He hired some nerd from UCF, you really think he is "great people"? Or do you just think hiring anybody from the GREAT State of FL is a great move? :-)

No, not just anyone from certainly would not be a move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Central Florida is in Oviedo, which is southeast of Orlando. This is along the I-4 corridor. Lots of terrible players come from this area. That Warren Sapp guy, he came from Apopka, northeast of Orlando. He never amounted to anything. There are not many good players in Tampa, either. Urban Meyer spends time in Orlando, well he's just wasting his time.

Anytime you can establish a beach head in another team's territory, this is a good thing.

Anyone have any idea why Paul Gonnella was hired in the first place? He was a sorry HS coach with no experience when Butch Davis hired him. The reason for that hire was to get Gonnella's top player, WR Joshua Adams. So what did he ever accomplish at UNC that made Kiffy want him here? I'm guessing that he was hired just to get UNC's recruiting info for the NC area. Six months and out the door!

Here's what a former HS player had to say:
"Popular" and "caring" are two words that would never describe Coach G. He was always in it for himself, and would often leave us to practice for hours a night while he went home. He was an a@@hole, and will always be remembered as such"

In other news: Coordinator of football operations Scott Altizer will no longer serve in the UT recruiting department. After 15 years of service, Altizer is moving into a new role with the UT event management department.

UCF is in Orlando. Right in the middle of Florida.

This is a steal for the Vols. They're getting an intern with ties to arguably the best football program in South Florida. With Coach Gran and Rubio, South Florida will become Vol territory. Kiffin and Co. have a plan and this hire is all part of the plan to dismantle the Gay-tors once and for all.
