UCLA’s visit to Neyland Stadium on Sept. 12 has been set for a 4 p.m. kickoff on ESPN.
The network released a partial schedule of college football games on Wednesday.
The only other Tennessee kickoff time set is the Sept. 19 game at Florida, which is 3:30 p.m. on CBS.
The Vols open the season Sept. 5 against Western Kentucky.

4:00 pm, huh? It will be 110 degrees. Seems like I remember a UCLA game in maybe 1989???? It ended in a 26-26 tie but I've never been to a hotter game than that day.

Thanks god, I am flying in from LA to support the Vols and I am just glad that I wont have to kill myself with alcohol trying to get drunk by say a noon game nor kill ourselves with alcohol trying to last until an 8pm game. 4 pm is perfect. I'll be charming drunk by then.

Dang! I have to be at a wedding that day and it starts at 4. My daughter is the flower girl so I can't miss it. Thank goodness for DVR.

That game was around 1990-1991 with Andy Kelly and Tommy Maddux as Quarterbacks and it was a record high that day with Smokie being I.V.'ed and actually dying about 3 days later.
AND, we pretty much man handled them with ease with Maddux hitting the turf, yes TURF, about 10 times. I sat in front role TV seats and remember Shazzon Bradley having his way with the rest of the front 7.
Game was over at the flip of the coin.

Coming to DC for business at that time and planning to attend. 4PM is nice. Early tailgating, stick around at the strip and let the crowd clear out after the game without having to leave at midnight. I've got the forecast, 77/partly cloudy if you are UCLA fan and 77/partly sunny if you are a UT fan, so no worries about the heat!
ect1983 writes:
Sorry---but the 26-26 tie was 1985. Vols ahead 26-10 with less than 6 minutes to go, and blew it. We won the game in the early 90's with A.Kelley
mdvol writes:
Is it YOUR wedding?!? Otherwise, I see we already have a violation of wedding rule number one. The only acceptable wedding date from Sept to Dec is October 17. That is the only open date on the schedule. How weddings get planned (other than shotgun) on football Saturdays is beyond me!
VOLalumINuk writes:
It was 91. I remember it well as it was the first UT game I ever attended and my freshman year. Upper deck was brutal.

1989
Kelly didn't take over for good until after Bama.
I thought the final was like 17-14.
The 26-26 tie was earlier.

I'll be danged, it is 91. I forgot we played them that year.
All I tend to remember is notre Dame that year.

I hate to tell ya, but 1991 was definitely a TN win. I was there for that one. 1985 was the tie, but it don't matter.
Go Vols!
mdvol writes:
Did some checking....
The 1985 game was the 26-26 tie. And the 1991 game was a 30-16 Vol win. I think I had my games confused but I believe it was 1991 that was so damn hot. This year, it will be a good test for the Swamp the following week.
Waldorf writes:
By the way, it looks like Western KY will be a 12:30 kickoff.

Wasn't me that said the heat game was a tie, that was someone else. We stomped 'em.

Good, that should get them ready for the heat in Gainesville the following week.

Remember it well!! I went with my 73 year old father and he did not complain once even though the sun was dead in our face the whole game. I was 34 at the time and miserable!!They were carrying people out on stretchers and the concessions ran out of ice at the end of the third quarter. After the game we hiked up 17th Street to see my buddy Kent at the fire hall and air conditioning and a water fountain NEVER felt so good.
mdvol writes:
Seriously GD? Because that would SUCK. It will be 120 degrees at that game. HDTV baby!
gatorhator5033 writes:
That's right the final was 30-16 and was in 1991. Slapped Carl Pickens on Head after a long TD catch and ended up in my Boxer shorts by 3rd Quarter because of that head. And, sat next to band where they did carry them out of bleachers by the many due to heat in those extremely thick and heavy uniforms. And Kelly did take over from I believe Sterling Henson after Bama game in 1989. 1989 Bama game I believe was our only blimish.

the Tennessee UCLA where peyton was starting at Neyland in 1993 or 94 was my first UT game

There is just no sense in getting married on any day during football season. Eventually, you catch grief for taking your wife to the BIG GAME on your anniversary (or worse, if you don't wear the pants in your family you miss the BIG GAME because it is your anniversary).
Just avoid weddings during the football season!
Waldorf writes:
Yup. We look to be the what-used-to-be-JP-game that week.
Hottest I've ever been at Neyland was Fresno State in 2003, only to be trumped by hottest game ever 2 weeks later in Gainesville. That day was miserable.

I thought the tie was 1985...we did play UCLA in the heat early 90's if I remember right....seems like Smokey got overheated...help me remember Vol fans
blitzshoot writes:
You're correct. UCLA scored on the first play of the game. We took control, but they tied us in the fourth. Ended in a tie.
TommyJack writes:
Why do you say that, Gosh?
Waldorf writes:
I've heard/read that somewhere.....
I know it said it wasn't final, but it was how it was leaning.
Then again
http://www.lsufootball.net/tvschedule...
doesn't have it listed so it's probably not true.
Hopefully we can kick off the ESPNU series with a nice, much cooler, 6 PM kickoff.

Hottest game I remember is when we played the season opener in Nashville vs Wyoming. I think that was '04. I Was in upper deck with sun beating directly in our faces. Shirt looked I'd just showered in it after the game.

No. I've been married for 3 years. My wedding was in June because my wife knew better. I almost slapped him when he told me the date. If my daughter wasn't in the wedding then I would be in Knoxville or in my recliner. I think I will call and cuss him out now that I'm thinking about it. lol

Yeah - but the great one was in 1989 -
Coming off of a 5-6 1988 season disaster and a 17-14 first game struggle with a Colorado State Team (that something like 1-11 the year before) - The Vols went to play a #5 ranked UCLA team as 19 point underdogs.
Of course we slaughtered them and went onto an 11-1 season.
Does history repeat itself?

That was in Neyland Stadium. Stanley hid on the sideline on the 2d play of the game. Condredge made a dramatic return after his ankle injury to dive over the goal late inthe 4th to tie the game. Vols had a great goal line stand , holding UCLA 4 downs inside the 4. The first play after we held, Pat Ryan fumbled the snap into the end zone and the Bruins recovered.......
