TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama has taken the first step toward appealing a ruling by the NCAA that forced the Crimson Tide football program to vacate 21 wins.
The university said Thursday it has sent a notice of appeal to the NCAA, but won’t contest other sanctions, including three years of probation.
The NCAA placed Alabama’s football program and 15 other sports on probation after 201 athletes were found to have used their scholarships to get free textbooks or other materials they weren’t entitled to.
That group included 22 “intentional wrongdoers,” including seven football players. They obtained more than $100 in supplies for other students.
Alabama is also appealing penalties vacating the individual records of 15 student-athletes in men’s tennis and men’s and women’s track.

Good point. This might be a little too much agitation and the tide might get a little tougher penalty.

The attorneys are preparing a strong case for the defense. Page 4, paragraph 7, line 4 of the prepared document states, "We're talking about textbooks. These people down here can't read, so where's the crime?"

On probation again.
The Crimson Tide is on probation again.
The life they love is cheating on the rules, my friends.
That's why they can't stay off probation again.
On probation again.

And their way...
Is on probation again....
My apologies to Willy!

Bammer's on probation again, and they claim they didn't do it and/or the NCAA is being unfair. In other shocking, recurring news:

I hate the Crimson Tide and the Gators and Florida is not even a close second.
Of course, I'm talking football -- not 'UCONN' and their raggedy-@ss coach who is even worse than 'Bama.

Whiners. I can make a reasonable argument that Alabama should have received the DEATH PENALTY. In fact, I am going to FILE MY OWN APPEAL WITH THE NCAA THAT MAKES JUST THAT ARGUMENT! ! !
February 1, 2002, when Probation #2 was announced, Thomas Yeager, chairman of the NCAA Infractions Committee, said:
"[Alabama was] absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun. These violations are some of the worst, most serious that have ever occurred." If Alabama is found guilty of further violations during the probationary period, Yeager suggested the death penalty -- the elimination of a sports program -- could result. "God forbid, there's ever another appearance -- ever," Yeager said. "Should there be one -- particularly within the five-year period -- I don't know what's left."
Alabama has now been put on probation (Probation # 3) for violations which occurred during the five year period when Alabama was on probation (Probation # 2) for committing violations which occurred during a period of time when Alabama was on probation (Probation #1). Two separate transgressions WHILE ON PROBATION FOR OFFENSES BEGINNING AS FAR BACK AS 1993.
THE ALABAMA FREEDOM CLOCK

The ALABAMA FREEDOM CLOCK has not yet been reset to account for the latest probation. This clock was in perpetual countdown from February 1, 2002 through January 31, 2007, the period of probation #2 (during which the textbook scandal occurred).

Leftover material from probation #2. The drawing of Bear as Moses in the lower left corner is particularly funny.
My conclusion: ALABAMA SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED THE DEATH PENALTY.
As an aside, I do wish the Alabamians at one particular bank down there that I own stock in had spent less time worrying about Crimson Tide football over the last 5 years and more time thinking about how prudent it was to make billions of dollars worth of uncollectible loans.

This shouldn't even have been an NCAA issue.
BTW, get ready for another stomping this year. LOL!
stevefrommemphis writes:
Doesn't matter. If recent history is any guide, there's a good chance it will be "vacated" within 3 years.
CoverOrange writes:
I agree. This wasn't cheating, this was fraud. Why aren't those 201 student athletes going before a judge? I wouldn't expect jail time for any of them but they should have marks on their records, probationary sentences, community service, etc.
givehim6 writes:
Give them the max. Don't let them bowl for 5 years, only can recruite 15 per year for 5 years, and a fine bama 1\2 a millon. Let bama sit on that one for a while.g
Psychovol writes:
NCAA make them regret not taking their medicine. Bama has always thought they were above the rules and that false entitlement started with the Bear.
FWBVol writes:
What everyone seems to be overlooking is the NCAA cares about one thing, MONEY!!! The money from the bowl games is why they don't go to a playoff system in Division I (although I still would need to see a working model for that). But the bowls bring in millions and millions of dollars. Like Bama or hate Bama, nobody can deny that Bama is a cash cow for the NCAA. Every time an Alabama T-shirt is sold, the NCAA gets a percentage, just like it does when a UT item is sold.
Bama fans travel well, pay well and Alabama is a big TV draw. The NCAA says it doesn't want to penalize other teams that would be hurt by not having their games with Bama on the tube. The translated version is, "ESPN and CBS want to have Nick Saban and Alabama on TV." Since the networks now control the NCAA it should come as no surprise that Alabama wasn't given more than a slap on the wrist.
Does anyone think that Mississippi State or say Colorado would have gotten off with such a mild slap on the wrist?

No room to talk? Are you kidding me? How many times has the Vols football team been on probation in the last 20 years? BigOrangeJeff writes:
To all Bammer lurkers:
The problem isn't the Bookgate scandal in and of itself. The problem is that your oversight people allowed this while still within your probabtionary window.
Just like when a thug (Bammer) commits a major felony (paying HS coaches), then gets paroled early with a period of time on probation. He then gets picked up for something relatively minor (improper benefits, lack of institutional control). At that point, the judge (NCAA) has the right to sentence the slimeball (UAT) more heavily for all of his previous transgressions (list to long to itemize here).
cc623 writes:
Yes they do need to recruit more rapists so that after these next few years of being beaten by a former 5-7 team you guys will have someone to blame it on.If that doesn't do it for you or you guys happen to actually win the next few understand the record books do serve as the only correct account of what happened and with all the cheating going on I don't think anybody has to worry about Bama since there wins get wiped often!Keep it up and we won't ever have to actually beat you guys to pass you in the record books considering you guys are going backwards down the list every year regardless of your efforts!
tdforvols writes:
And when exactly would that be tide man? I can find no records anywhere of these two probations you mention. Everybody Google "NCAA places tennessee on probation" (with the paranthesis) and see what comes up. Now that's some funny sh*t right there!
cc623 writes:
Why would the joke be on him considering our school's record gets better every year with all the cheating going on at Bama. You guys will never learn it is hard to sound relevant when your school can't even manage to keep actual wins because they are too stupid to play by the rules.Better yet they are not even smart enough not to get caught(maybe you guys should contact Coach Cal since he would at least get somebody to make you look smart and not get caught).

TideRoll, My original post said in the past 20 years. If you want to count the 91 incident then OK as that barely fits into the 20 year timeframe. I see the NCAA imposed zero sanctions on the Vols for that minor incident. Face the music: the Vols are a mean & clean football team while the tide is always in the NCAA doghouse.

Either way, it's great just knowing they are having to appeal. Enjoy the process.
cc623 writes:
First off he is "free and clear" from Memphis while they are being investigated(if you are insinuating UMASS seems to me everybody else took the fall for Cal).Yes it does hurt you for the future because it will continue to happen until Bama finally gets the death penalty from the NCAA.Last I checked we had coaches in every sport and are not minus any and as a matter of fact there's plenty that that the turd staff would give their left testicle for(especially after Saban rolls out the door).
