Hendrix commits to Notre Dame

Quarterback Andrew Hendrix from Moeller High School in Cincinnati has committed to Notre Dame.

Hendrix was considering Tennessee before selecting the Irish.

UT is thought to have only offered one other undecided pro-style quarterback: Jesse Scroggins from Lakewood (Calif.) High School.

Scroggins is attending a camp at Southern California. He is one of a handful of quarterback prospects who is up for a single scholarship offer which will be based on their camp performance.

UT also offered Blake Bell from Wichita, Kan. who committed to Oklahoma and Jake Heaps from Sammamish, Wash., who committed to BYU.

I hope you're right Rich, because the talent poole is thinning out.

Unless he becomes a Gator or a Trojan :-)

I am really not surprised about his decision. I'm like Rich, I thought he was a Notre Dame lean for awhile. Now, I say we go after Scroggins heavy. This year may not be strong at the quarterback position, but some of these guys are going to be just fine. We need a good quarterback this signing class. GO VOLS!!!

Be loud and proud. That sounds like a helluva idea. Make sure he hears you. LOL!!! GO VOLS!!!

Why would a QB choose USC when they have a great QB from last years class, that is from what I have read is practicing real well? I know these players aren't suppose to be afraid of competion, but come on be real.

Mark, just curious. Why would Scroggins be a silent, and not go ahead and verbal?

Marc,
I think Scroggins will end up at UT anyway, but if USC offers it will be interesting. I know that you said on here that Marve was "committed" to UT before he announced he was going to Purdue. Anybody that thinks that a 17-18 year old is really "committed" until the ink hits the paper hasn't been following recruiting the last several years.

but, you watch, tennessee will get no one that they really want. they will have to "settle" for someone who they really didn't want to give a scholarship to.....and he will turn out to be better than all the other guys they struck out on.

florida has had it's five star qb's who have worked out.....tim tebow, chris leak, danny wuerffel....and they have had five star qb's named tim olmstead, bobby sabelhaus, and brock berlin.

Oh, thats a great idea......done and done. I have a ton of UCLA friends who hate USC and will also dress up in TN shirts and help me out. Im outta here..........wish me luck cuz USC is a ghetto and after the noise we cause, we will either end up dead or heroes....or just dead heroes.

StroVol writes:

Having seen the stunts Kiffin has pulled already, Lane probably told Scroggins to be a silent committ so he could enjoy the spotlight for a few more months or year. Scroggins ate it up and will show his appreciation by becoming a VOL.

Its all good Marc, wasn't really calling you out on the Marve thing, just pointing out that the kids flip-flop daily. UF has been on both sides of the "commited" players changing their minds in the last several years. I just pull for whichever kids end up on campus.

How where we able to sign David Oku after signing Brown. Kids do things because they think it is best for them, I guess. Go Vols

The only reason, I could see for him to be a silent is so he can go to the USC camp and feel the love from his hometown school. If he gets offered by USC he can always have that feather in his hat that he could have went there. I'm with you and Rich, after the camp he will commit to UT.

i've said that florida is out of the scroggins sweepstakes a couple of times now.

the comment was tongue in cheek. i think tennessee will end up with a qb they will be happy with whether it's one they have been after extremely hard or one they have to "settle" for.

florida fans keep crying about not being able to land a nfl type running back and all florida does is lead the conference in rushing.

tennessee will get a good qb, even if his name is not scroggins.

AllVol1 writes:

We all know this, but it remains an important point that he is a California kid. Scroggins just left UT where we "rolled out the orange carpet". He spoke in nothing but positives. Lane told us that he encourages his recruits NOT to commit hastily, but to go see what is out there and compare that to UT. (I love that kind of confidence!!) Scroggins does not have to be a genius to know that if he goes to the USC camp as a Vol commit, the experience will be slightly different. Coaches and players will treat him differently. I would think that he just wants to enjoy the recruiting process at his big 3 schools--especially the one that is 20 minutes from his home. In the end, he WILL be a Vol. It is a better situation for PT, he loved to campus, the facilities, the coaches, the players, and he talked about the hope that his cousin will play here, too. Let's follow Lane's lead here, and sit back with some confidence. (Although, I must say I love the idea of people being at the USC camp wearing the Big Orange. That is confident, too, in a different kind of way.)

SWARM!!

That's true. That happens so many times. The QB position is the hardest to recruit for. Not because of finding an athlete. There are many of those out there. The problem is finding a guy who can bring it all. A great athlete, thinking on the run, team player and a leader for the team. That's a lot ot ask of an 18 year old coming out of high school. Some can. But many more cannot. For every Peyton and Teabow there are the 10 times the numbers of losers or never could haves. I hope Lane has some magic up his sleeve. Maybe our Red Sock pitcher will be that diamond that no body is talking about. He is actually a physical speciemn, and he's on campus for the summer workouts. 6-5 and 250 pounds with a great arm. My fingers are crossed. I would love Scroggins. But we will get what we will get.

Go Vols

This is excellent. I'm glad to see some debate and discussion on this board for once.

I agree that if USC offers Scrog then it'll be interesting to see where he chooses. Still, I'm of the impression that he's got to recognize the difference maker b/t the two programs...early playing time.

Here's hoping we land him!

And Cameron Newton a five star dual QB. More to the position than just a strong arm and being 6' 4". How bright you are, your work habits and character plus are you a leader these things count too. Go Vols

That's a good take Mark. It also seems about right, I would love to see Scroggins and a WR or two commit early next week. That's the same as what BYU did a month ago, with Heaps.

We will all get to see how much Meyer will change his system after this season. Brantley is being called by some as the best pure passer ever at UF. Shane Mathews has 14 years in the NFL and says the kid is a special passer. He was one of those "committed" to other school kids too (Texas).
After watching Meyer win a National Title with Chris Leak and defense, I have complete confidence that he will make it work with Brantley.

SPEAKS_THE_TRUTH writes:

Rivals comments about him at the camp so far...
QB Jesse Scroggins
6-3/195, Lakewood (Calif.) High
He had a hip-pointer and wasn't 100 percent, but he did a solid job. Throwing the deep ball isn't his specialty, but connecting on intermediate routes is where he's deadly. He is extremely accurate and can put the ball on the money in tight quarters. He also showed some good mobility despite the sore hip by running away from pass rushers when the camp moved into 11-on-11 work.

hotrodvol writes:

"Being told that Lakewood(CA) QB Jesse Scroggins did indeed get a USC offer today. The 6'3 signal caller was the best QB in attendance from what I'm told. I still think Tennessee lands him, but the SC offer will definitely make it interesting."

Scroggins is going to Florida! It's not an indictment against Lane Kiffin or his ability to get a QB! He has two QBs sitting on ice in Laimason and Rettig. I don't think people are paying enough attention to our baseball project, Mike Rozier (i think). I have seen his high school film and he will be great if he still has that arm strength. He has everything you want. He has four years of eligibility, maturity, talent, height, and a football ready body.

I have to disagree with you beatem, I don't see Scroggins coming to UF, and I think that Rozier is a nice backup plan at best. More kids than not are ever able to get back the football speed once they have been away from it for a couple of years. UT will get a good QB, whether its Scroggins or another kid a little below the radar.

Rozier is here for another arm in practice. His education is paid for, he will carry a clip board on the sidelines during the game(Cooter) and chase girls after the game. Dang what a life!

Rumor has it that USC has offered Scroggins. UT has something nobody else can offer among his finalists. He can basically be promised PT in his freshman season. Him being thought of as a silent commit doesn't make sense. Wouldn't you want other recruits seeing what type of players are coming to UT?

NOMOREWOO, I'm kinda wondering why we let Boyd go myself? He tore up the AA game.

Scenarios:
1. Scroggins does not commit - Johnathon Crompton does extremely well; Reaves coaching ability is lauded, and we get a better pick in 2011.
Downside: The recruiting on the offensive side of the ball suffers this year because we don't sign a 'name' QB.
2. Lamaison commits - wins the starting job - does well - Reaves is lauded for his coaching ability - get a better than average QB to commit in 2011, but not the cream of the crop.
3. Scroggins commits - high profile offensive recruits commit in droves - Crompton does well - Reaves is lauded as Scroggins gets adequate playing time to prepare for 2011. Where does leave us in the QB recruiting process for 2011?
4. No QB commits - offense struggles behind poor QB play - situation becomes more desperate - How does the staff turn around the QB quandary?

buxavol writes:

Who are the other kids participating in the USC camp? If Scroggins bolts to USC, or FL, would one of these other kids be an option?
