Rico McCoy started Tennessee spring football practice on Tuesday at strongside linebacker (SAM) after having played weakside for most of his career.
Linebacker coach Lance Thompson said the move will allow McCoy more ability to make plays.
“The SAM is a guy that you can bring off the edge and make some things happen, create some situations where he’s one-on-one with running backs,” Thompson said. “More than anything, he’s just the guy (at linebacker) who had the most experience, really the only guy to have any experience.”
Former Farragut standout Nick Reveiz got the opening nod at middle linebacker in spring practice. LaMarcus Thompson has gotten the initial chance at weakside.
Despite a lack of experience, coach Thompson said he’s pleased with his unit’s athletic ability.
“We’ve got guys that can run,” Thompson said. “They’re very good in the short area (with) change of direction and that sort of stuff.”

Good move. But I think Reveiz will get beat out. We have a lot of talent at LB. And Reveiz was not too impressive.

It's going to be interesting to see all the moves as the coaches try to find players and put them in the right position to contribute. I like the physical spring promised by LK, though we are thin enough an injury to the wrong player could be catastrophic. Oh well, that's why LK and staff get paid the big bucks to make those decisions.

McCoy @ SAM, Donald @ WILL & BIG G. Williams @ MIKE. Now that's a Linebacking Corps. Secondary will be Solid at worst, Fantastic at best. D_Line could be our Achilies. Thin and unproven up front gets you beat in the SEC.
golfballs03 writes:
What about G Williams
dvhill100 writes:
Yep. You need the other helmet and a twin.

Yea I agree with you. Too much talent at the LB position, but I guess this is where things will start out. I'm anxious to see Rico get the opportunity to hit the QB though. WHEN he hits, he hits like a freight train.
hotrodvol writes:
Rocky it would be great if LBs work out this way, then the freshmen could get eased into the rotation. DEs should be fine and G Williams may end up back here again, but DT has one starter back and three or four young guys for the other spot and depth. Of course the new strenth coach should help these positions, not to mention M. Kiffin will make it work some how some way.

Wow, how surprising, one of our QB's tripped over his own feet during a drill. Come on guys, pull it together. You are by-God Vol football players. Time to step it up. We are all counting on you, or at least one of you. IMO it will be Coleman. He made the most of his few opportunities and has the best arm. But who knows? I wouldn't have given a wooden nickel for Ainge after his Junior year. Very similar to Crompton's struggles. You have to beleive it was the Clawfense. Don't you? Please, please tell me that was the case. Anyone? Can I put away my noose yet? Can Oku pass at all? Do we need to go back to the single wing? So many questions, so few meaningful answers this time of year. Waiting til Fall is absolutely going to kill me.

I wouldn't write Reveiz off-- he has a good work ethic and is utterly fearless. I loved watching him on kickoff coverage in '07 as the "Wedge Buster"-- he would usually take out 2 or 3 blockers at a time.

Of course the kids themselves have basically just blown it off as no big deal. The media leaves that part out. Having said that, it certainly wasn't one of LK's smarter comments.
I think he will be fine. It's a combination of SEC microscope, his personality (good), and the first PR gaffe that set everyone off and now he has everyone's undivided attention. The guy can't turn on a light without comments from the press.
I am glad he can now do what he was hired to do and coach.
