Great. He's a great rep for UT. This kind of publicity is always a good thing.

Hopefully Coach Pearl will be in the sweet 16 next year in a coaching capacity rather than as an analyst.

Coach Cal found a way to lose the NC game last year, and I'm sure he'll do the same this year.

Witch Doctor,

I am a big fan of your posts and am almost always in agreement with them. It is really amazing to look at how far UT basketball has come since Bruce, not only with the product on the court but with the publicity and exposure off the court.

I would like him to pursue Seth Curry, brother of Steph Curry, who recently transferred out of Liberty and led all freshman scorers!!! Thoughts?

Pearl's National Champs = Cal's National champs

Probably won't make it to the NC game this year.

What we need is another PG. This kid is really a SG. But I guess you have to weigh all your options. Do we have any for the coming year? I don't know enough about the JC guys we're looking at to know.

Actually, Pearl won a Division II National Championship at Southern Indiana. So he's one up on Cal.

Curry wants to transfer to an ACC school in North Carolina. He won't play at UNC or Duke, and Wake is pretty deep with young guards. I would bet he ends up at NC State.

Yeah, I know, but I didn't feel like having to argue with the Memphis Tiger-cubs about it...

Hmmmmm......Pat's disappointed with her young team's NCAA tourney showing and busting her girls with a never-heard-of after season practice and BP on the other hand appears to be taking his pre-season highly ranked team's dismal showing in stride and is hob-nobbing in front of the big lights and CBS (maybe Pat is doing the same with the girl's tourney and I just didn't know?). Pat is clearly a "my way or the highway" type of coach. I don't know, maybe I'm not being fair, but it looks like to me these two coaches certainly take their disappointments differently. I wonder which team we can honestly expect to see something different for next year? Hmmmm.......

NC State would be a good bet, but some of the rumors on the ESPN boards point towards Arizona State (if he wants to move that far west)... they are supposedly pushing hard for him

Coach Cal is in his 9th year at Memphis, Pearl just finished his 4th at TN.

Cal's first 4 at Memphis:
93-39, 2 NIT's, 2 NCAA's

Pearl's first 4 at TN:
98-37, 4 NCAA's

Cal went to the NIT in his 5th and the elite 8 in year 6. Might be a little soon for gloating, but we'll see.

Vol_Jokes writes:

Volunloser fans so funny. In reading the comments from you so far we've been told that pearl won some division 5 championship with players not good enough to make it to big time college basketball playing against even worse competetion. It was then mentioned that Memphis went to the NIT several times. You did leave out the fact that we won the NIT the year before we started our incredible run in the ncaa tourney... won it.. you know like pearl won that lame championship of div 2. I'd say it's more than the vols have ever come close to doing and seems the lowly SEC teams are dropping like flies out of even the NIT. Florida could not even beat Penn State last night..playing at home.

We then get some lame comparison of Cals first years as oppossed to Pearls where you list that the Vols went to the ncaa 2 more times. Give me a break people. I've watched you volunlosers search hard for any advantage you can find. It's not easy is it. You went to the ncaa 4 times ..so..what have you done there. Do you think Pearl will make it to 4 straight elite 8's beginning next year and a national championship game within the next few years. Of course not. Memphis is the only team in the nation that has done it. So, the comparisons will stop there. You'll then find something else like Cal's teams scored 2000 points during his 5th season and Pearls teams scored 2001.
It's lame. You are trying to compare a program that has never achieved against one of the best in the country. Last year your wonderful coach was a guest at our final 4 and championship game. This year he's a guest for our game to go to the elite 8. Realize he's not coaching in these. His teams weren't good enough and so he has to just make some lame comments as a spectator. When Cal is a guest commentator at Pearls game then you'll have something. Until then........ha ha ha ha ha.

Let's see, I think i'll go over to the poll about which vol team was the most disappointing this year. Is there an 'all of the above' option?

Memphis V_JJ: glad you are finally getting it - Anything from the Volunteers in Big Orange Country is better than everything from tiger high! Hey, we ARE glad that Memphis is in Big Orange Country though; we might even make Cal an honorary member of the Orange Tie Club if he keeps up the good work! Don't choke against some real Tigers.

Well my young friend (I 'm guessing you're young, for if you're not you certainly should be.), you miss the point entirely. Of course Memphis is a better team. Calipari is a much more experienced and established coach than Pearl, and he's been at his school for NINE years. Your competition should be UNC, and Duke, and Kansas, and other well established national powers. If I were a Memphis fan, and my tigers weren't doing better than TN, I'd be a little ticked. The Vols are still a wannabe just as Memphis was in Cal's early years. Maybe the Vols will get there or maybe they won't, I don't know. The point is that it usually takes time to build a high level program, and Pearl has done about as well in his first 4 years as most any coach you care to name. I don't know what the future will be for either school, and I don't really care what it is for Memphis, good or bad; but I do know that eventually things change, and the people you insult today will have long memories. Gloating is a drug, no more than a temporary feel good. Why waste your time? Just enjoy your team's success and let others have their own moments. Post what you want, I'll say no more.

Very nice response. I grew up in Jackson,TN and was was a big fan of Memphis St. Larry Finch was my hero. In the imaginary games I played in my back yard, I was Larry, leading my team to victory. That being said, my dad was a huge UT fan and I love the BIG ORANGE. I still enjoy watching the tigers play and hope they do well, except when they play the VOLS. I seem to remember him being known for winning shooting contests with his players. Memphis has had some pretty darn good players and coaches over the years.

You're absolutely right. I'm just as put off by Vol fans who use words like "tiger high" and other adolescent bs as I am by opponents, and my comments were obliquely directed at them as well. I also know from my own college days that Memphis fans have good reason to carry chips on their shoulders for TN; that's the dark side of human nature, but it doesn't mean we have to give in to it.
BTW, I live in North Carolina and when you say nobody does more insulting than Vol fans, I take it you haven't met many Duke fans? Normally, I'm not really concerned with the fortunes of any team other than TN, but I think I might like to see Duke lose every game just once. I don't know for sure, but it's a thought.

You're an ok guy vjunkie. You know it would be boring on here without some tiger fans stirring things up. The other tigers will be a tough game tonight. Outcome just depends on which team of the Memphis Tigers decides to show up. Sometimes they come out flat and other times come out sharp. Just have to see which version shows up tonight.

Reason, I thought Brucie was the one that did that kind of stuff. At least Illinois says so.

Or some kind of an idiot to actually allow it to bother you so much that you go to the trouble to create a post like yours.

yeah it's a lot of trouble to post on here... it takes ten seconds. didn't say it bothered me. just questioning why you're here. do you go to kansas' newspaper to trash the hawks? Tulsa? UAB? just curious honestly.

Vol_Jokes writes:

No, none of those dcap, because no fans from those teams come to our sites and trash the Tigers. None of those fans refer to Memphis as their little brother or use the good ole 'tiger high' remark or refuse to give Memphis any credit using the same stale excuse that we have a good record only because we are in cusa.

Now that's the difference between a good rep for your school (Pearl) and a hold your breath and hope you don't make a butthole of yourself rep (BG) I am not a UT fan per say but i like CBP's attitude. I think he has class.

I just heard an unconfirmed rumor that Gillespie was fired today. Is that fact or fiction? Nothing on any sports board that I can find.

I have NO idea, this is the best kept news that's ever been, I keep checking ESPN, catspause and the Herald Leader and nobody has had anything to say so far.

If he got the ax today i'd say he's busy counting that 6 mil. buyout money and i'd say it's champaigne not beer he's soaking up LOL

You are so right about Duke. Both my brother and sister-in-law are Dook graduates, it was really interesting when I worked at the University of Maryland! Talk about passion ...

:) Yep I like to tell my Dookie friends that there's nothing wrong with them that a couple of good losing seasons wouldn't cure. They just laugh and say "fat chance", and they're probably right. Duke fans have the unique privilege of extreme passion and extreme success for their team. If I were they, I'd probably be a little tiresome too.
