Point guard Goins to visit UT this weekend

Melvin Goins, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Mount San Jacinto, (Calif.) Junior College will visit Tennessee this weekend.

Goins was the Player of the Year in the Foothill Conference last season.

The Vols have already signed power forward Kenny Hall from Stone Mountain, Ga., and are actively seeking an impact player for point guard next season.

Goins played a season at Ball State and played in 30 games as a true freshman (2007-08). He averaged eight points, 2.3 assists and three steals for the Cardinals, making the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman team before transferring to junior college.

Goins averaged 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead Christian Life Academy in Kingsville, Texas, to a 42-8 record his senior season of high school.

His situation must not be lookin' good if we're going after another JUCO point guard.

Volunatic writes:

If this Goins guy is "all that"-- all he needs to do is watch some UT games from this past season to see that he would get significant playing time here.

Just great! We are going after a point guard who only averages 2.3 assists per game.

Point guards are good. Offensive guards would be better.

From what i read the reason he transfered was because they benched him. Sounds a little like Maze's senario

Actually he averaged 2.3 assists at Ball State. But yes, he did average 5 in HS... at JC he averaged 4.9 assists and 17.2 PPG

Apparently NEITHER of you read the article right. It says Goins averaged 2.3 assists as a freshman at BALL STATE, which is a mid-major, NOT a JC.

AlpharettaVol writes:

He's listed at 5-11, which probably means he is closer to 5-10. That's pretty small for big time colleges. Let's hope he has big time quickness and other attributes to make up for his lack of size.

It was the Ball State Cardinals. Sorry I didn't read down a little further before jumping in.

bigrob writes:

The article in inside tenn.. the scout/tenn website... says he was benched hiss final 3 games his freshman year was the reason he transfered. Who knows though. maybe he actually did improve in JC. Im not getting my hopes up though

golfballs03 writes:

He's a score first kind of guard. We haven't had a point guard like that since Tony Harris. That's not necessarily a bad thing if he's a stud like Ty Lawson, but this kid isn't. I would prefer someone who is pass first, is going to command the floor and shell out the assists without turning it over. Of course, you have to evaluate your options, which are pretty thin now - we need to get the best players available to us. Seriously though, Daniel West is still on track to join the team as far as I know.

DisorientedVol writes:

If he can shoot a three, bring him on. I am not getting my hopes up as well. Is there a problem with West or is this just depth?

johnlg00 writes:

Who knows, CBP may be courting him just to light a fire under Maze. Or it may be that Maze is considering transferring. Or it may be that West's academic situation is still not settled. Lots of possible reasons why we might be looking at him. His stats and history don't exactly scream "big-time" but he may be worth talking to.

.327% in 3's... Right there where Chism averaged

Not sure what article you're reading, but those where his HS stats. We don't know what his JC stats are.

Recruiting Juco = desperation. There's a reason a player, including West, goes through the JUCO system: he doesn't have the grades. No grades = marginal player on UT team. Pearl, just go get a good PG from HS who has decent grades!!!!!

He's done that, however, doesn't come till next year. I am not sure why the gap with the point gaurds but these guys are apparently the best to fill it until 2010. Will we have any forwards or centers in 2010?

The only east Tennessee high school kid signing D-1 recently was Omar Wattad (might have misspelled that, sorry) signing with Georgetown (out of Science Hill)

If you look closely at the record, there have been a ton of decent players from ET who weren't "good enough" or something for UT but managed to do rather well elsewhere. There must be at least a dozen guys from the state who were contributors for other major programs just this past season. Take a cue from CLK and "build a fence" around Tennessee, CBP. Got to be a LOT of in-state guys who would bleed Big Orange AND help us on the court if the staff didn't treat them like afterthoughts.

My understanding, and I am fairly close to the situation, is that Pearl "didn't have a scholarship" to offer McBee and had wanted him to be an invited walk-on. McBee has great range as a shooter and is outstanding at the free throw line, which the Vols need. Is a scholarship opening up or not? Pearl should quit stringing McBee along. McBee WANTS to be a Vol but he does have a number of other schools interested. McBee could be there four years while Goins would have only two.

Do we have a scholarship for him? we get 12... Smith, Prince, Chism, Williams, Negedu, Jurick, Hopson, Tatum, Tabb, Maze, the new signee for next year.. that makes 11. Am I missing anyone, or does that leave 1 scholarship for a PG or McBee?

You need to read the entire article "dude".... the 5 assists was his senior year of high school.

I'm sure we can get a better player than this. If we want to get past the 1st or 2nd round of the NCAA next year, we need 2 guards to step up. I know 1 will be Hopson, but we really need to get a slashing PG who loves to play D, press, and turn over the other team.

Oops forgot about him... so how does CBP plan on getting this JC PG on campus? (curious)... are we going to red shirt Woolridge (if that makes his scholarhip not count toward to total?) or does he think Smith is going pro...?

West is paying his own way. His Scholarship is Maze's now, if I remember correctly.

UTandETSUfan writes:

I don't think so (with all due respect). West wasn't eligible for a scholly, so Bruce went and got Maze. You can't then take Maze's scholarship back now that West has become eligible. Either he will have to earn a scholarship (when one is open) or he will have to keep paying his way and acting as a "walk-on" (although one that could see BIG min.)

UTandETSUfan writes:

I agree. If we work on FT's and layups as well as our transition play (defensively and offensively) then we should be alright. I believe the Maze/Tabb tag team works pretty well, and that Maze could be "the guy" if he works a little harder and plays more consistently. If our PF's step it up in the off season, we should be a team to be reckoned with.

eefor10c writes:

A little more in-depth information on McBee. He is listed at 6'2" but may be more like 6'1". For the season he averaged just over 24 ppg, shot 38% on 3's, 82.9% from the foul line, 8.1 rebounds per game and four assists. Most of this while being double or triple teamed. The team had only two other scoring threats so teams could cheat and try to cover him. He had a bad game against Carter at Carter but went off on them at Grainger. He had 44 points, hit 7 of 12 threes, 13-14 at the foul line, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. This is against a team that went to the state.

Which sucks because that guy from what I understand was a true stud! Kenny if I am not mistaken is a 5* recruit.

Foothill Conference?? Sounds like it fits right in with ROCKY TOP.

Timed_vol (Inactive) writes:

I gotta trust Bruce on this one. I think he may be looking at having someone like this kid AND Maze AND West....so he can run a 3-gurad offense at times, and press more.

I'm betting Bruce is getting the message that we Vol fans liked the style a lot better his first 3 years than last year. HOWEVER, Bruce knows to win it all, he needs the big power guys too.

Let's see hwat happens. I'd love it if we where flexible enouth to play 3 or 4 guards, yet also be able to play a power game as well. It's be great if these guys all learn to drive and finish at the rim.

bobbytodd writes:

Actually I heard on a local sports talk radio program there is a chance Tyler Smith could leave. Of course he would love to go to the NBA but may go to Europe because of family financial issues. CBP may just be covering his bases in case this is the scholarship that opens up. This wasn't said by a caller it was actually the host of the show.
