A day after telling infielder Chris Burke he wouldn't be part of the 25-man opening-day roster, the San Diego Padres traded him Sunday to the Seattle Mariners for cash considerations.
The former University of Tennessee star has played every position in the majors except pitcher and catcher. He appeared in 86 games last year with the Arizona but wasn't re-signed by the Diamondbacks.
Burke became a free agent and signed with the Padres, who invited him to training camp as a non-roster player.
The Louisville, Ky., native batted .281 with a double and three RBIs in 15 spring games with San Diego. The Mariners have 38 players in camp.
