Hood made 50 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and forced five fumbles in helping Catholic to the Class 3A state championship.. He also had nine catches for 207 yards and two scores.

This will be a hurricane compared to some of the sprinkles we saw with Kiffin to this point. Surprised the inter-posers aren't circling like vultures already.

Agree that it isn't pretty but Kiffin didn't make the final decision on him being admitted to school.

Also worth noting that Auburn, CO, FL, GA Tech, Louisville, NC ST, Ole Miss, SC, Stanford, UCLA and Va Tech were recruiting him as well.

Heaps has not committed anywhere. He's LDS so it wouldn't be surprising if he did commit to BYU.

Yes, some may he may deserves a second chance. I personally do not know this boy, but I do know that if I was part of the UT administration I would be doing everything possible to keep this kid off the team and out of our school. The football program has kicked off players for FAR less serious situations than this. This kid is mentally unstable, and personally it makes me sick that any school would consider offering a scholarship to this kid.

I've got no intentions of sticking around for it. The decision is made, right or wrong. I personally don't like it, but it's done.

Kiffin keeps saying he will make UT a gateway to the NFL. Convicted criminals seem to be on the resume' of many NFL players. I guess this is another step to make UT the Radiers (not the Southern Cal) of the east. NFL, here comes UT as your prep school (coaching and convictions included). Sad day for the Orange Nation.

Not that it really makes a difference because stars arent the be all end all of how good a player is but Rivals has him as a 3 star.

Funny, Ole Miss had a lot of 2 and 3 star recruits on their team last year and they seemed to have no problem punking the mighty Gators in their house.

Good news for the Vols. We need all the O-Line help we can get.

As for next years class UT listed in the top 7 schools for 23 of the top 100. And 31 of the top 150.

Here's a breakdown by position. Scout only list the top 7 schools for each prospect. We are listed on...
QB 4 of the top 20 (Jake Heaps is #1)
RB 3 of the top 8
FB 3 of the top 7
WR 7 of the top 25 (including #s 2,3,6,8,10)
TE 3 of the top 10
OT 4 of the top 15
OG 1 of the top 10 (hope that changes)
C 2 of the top 5 (#s 1 and 5)
DT 5 of the top 20 (coach O doing his job)
DE 8 of the top 20 (did I mention coach O)
OLB 3 of the top 15 (including #1 and 3rd overall)
MLB 2 of the top 10
S 2 of the top 10
CB 5 of the top 15

Out of those 52 players
4 are 5* (scout only list 25 5*s)
36 are 4* and 12 are 3* (mostly the FBs and TEs)

Long time till signing day but interesting numbers, and I had a ton of free time.

No one here is without sin, but hopefully none of us here have done what this kid has been convicted of. It's embarrasing the way people are reacting to this. If a player misses classes, practice, or smokes dope the fan base blasts him and calls for him to be kicked off the team, but we have a recruit who is convicted of a heinous crime, and it doesn't bother anyone. Heck, we had an outstanding recruits scholarship pulled for shooting some one with a pellet gun. That is childish behavior. What Hood did was the behavior of an unstable monster. Do we not care because he is a well to do white boy from Knoxville. I love the vols and will continue to do so, but I will never support this kid. Now, I'm through commenting on the subject.

I guess that with some people there is a fine line between "casting the first stone" and someone wanting a person to account for their actions. What he did AT LEAST elicits discussion.

I can't imagine having ever done anything like that before, or during my time at Catholic, and I was pretty young and stupid.

Daniel Hood is a 3 star player and the #35 OT in the country. He had around 27 offers and a handful were from SEC schools. Once the news of his legal trouble made it out into the public a couple of schools backed off him. Hamilton and Kiffin both approved of his scholarship. He had a 3.8 GPA and a 27 on his ACT at Knox Catholic. It seems like he made a mistake when he was 13 years old, but has not been in any type of trouble since then.

Hmm? I've reread my post and can't find anything that says Heaps is coming to UT.

That is just a list of the top players that are considering UT. I'm sure the NCAA wouldn't let us sign all 52 even if they all wanted to come here.

Personally I think we have a better chance of signing Hendrix out of Cincy then I do Heaps or Scroggins.

Hood met with Hamilton and other officials prior to being offered the scholarship.

The TSAA thought highly enough of him to name him Mr. Football for 2008.

This very paper called him a "hero".

"The Catholic football team defeated Memphis Mitchell 28-18 in the Class 3A state championship game earlier this month to complete a 15-0 season. Among the heroes were Tyler Williamson, Jordan Howanitz and 3A Mr. Football lineman of the year Daniel Hood."

http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2008/Dec...

Not saying I feel good about the situation, but there are a lot of people who have signed off on Mr. Hood. I only hope he stays on the straight and narrow and learned from his actions.

Not a fan of this move. Arguments can be made he was young and following the example of an older teen, but at 13, you should know better. Even if he deserves a second chance in life, it doesn't mean he deserves a free ride to college.

While he was only 13, he was old enough to know better! I agree, we do not need Hood. Besides the lack of remorse/repentance, one of the most telling statements in the document is that he is a follower, not a leader. And, the leader currently is serving ten years in the penitentiary! With this troubled past, I fervently hope that the time at Catholic High taught him some values, and that his cousin can fully recover from the traumatic acts that he perpetrated upon her. SAVol

While all these teams recruit dopers you think there is nothing wrong with that,a guy makes one bad move being a 13 year old and you are all over it. You are a hypocritical D.A.
