Victim's letter says Catholic's Hood 'has been very remorseful towards me'

Daniel Hood

Daniel Hood

The victim of a sexual assault involving a Tennessee signee urged the university to admit him.

In a letter dated Feb. 4, 2009 and obtained by the News Sentinel on Wednesday, the victim wrote that she would support Catholic High School star Daniel Hood, to whom she is related, in his quest to attend college and play football.

Hood, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound lineman and tight end, signed a scholarship with UT on Tuesday.

“I know... Daniel on a personal level and believe that he has been very remorseful towards me,” the letter reads in part. “He is a very caring individual. We are now working on rebuilding our relationship. Hoping to become a family like before. He is becoming a very mature adult and will be a great asset to any college and to society as a whole.”

The incident happened in 2003, and Hood was placed in Department of Children’s Services custody until his 17th birthday.

A 17-year-old also involved in the incident is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Happy to see that KNS did not mention the victim's name in this article. Unfortunately, in one of the previous articles they mentioned the victim's nae. I think it is wholly wrong for KNS to publicize the name of a child rape victim.

3A Mr. Football. The kid has tons of game.

I wonder how much of the incident might have been a dumb azz 13 yr. old playing like its a joke and then it developed and he followed the pervert's lead, Or if it was premeditated. I would think if he really wanted to rape, he might have personally done it.

Maybe an alternative might have been to let the kid walk on and pay his way at least the first year to "prove himself" would have been the better PR move. Catholic High is probably as expensive as UT. Or, he could have gotten the lottery schlorship with his grades.

It's tragic circumstances for everyone. I was surpirsed the court did not seal the records becasue of the ages. Based on the young mans actions since the crime it seems the courts made the appropriate decisons taking him from his parents and placing him with DCS. It sounds like the rehabilitation has been positive for him and his cousin to date. No doubt it needs to continue. Hopefully his time at UT with strong, positve leadership and mentoring, his maturation and rehabilitation into life will continue and he will redeem himself as he becomes a man and have a positive life and postive affect on others.

I don't know, TJ, it just seems like the flavor of the day. We all have heard the story. Do we throw him under the bus or give him a chance at life? Has she forgiven him? Apparently the answer is 'yes'. I think CLK and company made the right decision.

Sorry, I read the following in a previous article "According to UT athletic department director of public relations Tiffany Carpenter, the victim wrote a letter on Hood’s behalf urging the university to admit him" When I initially read it, I interpreted it to meant that according to a UT director of public relations, that Tiffany Carpeneter, the victim wrote a letter on Hood's behalf. Now I realize that Tiffany Carpenter was in fact the public relations director. Thank you KNS for not releasing the victims name.

I agree Tommy. None of us were there and it's the courts job to try and convict. Not ours!!!
but it is a relavant story and should be shared.

I tend to agree with this logic. We'll give him a chance...if the victim wishes it to be so, that's good for me.

KNS, just curious. What do you gain as a corporation by allowing a previously high class Vol news website to turn into a cesspool? Just curious.

Just want to point out that DC and zz always say they post the facts. Why, however, do they keep getting comments removed and profiles booted? Come on now, zz had posts in this article removed and DC got booted earlier today. Guess KNS is getting wise to their disrespectful and hateful words.

I won't say a darn thing regarding Daniel Hood. It's none of my business, I don't know the kid, I don't know the situation. I'm agnostic, and while I don't follow the bible, I do believe in God, and only He can judge the boy. Please take into consideration that this could happen to your daughter, OR your son. Leave the victims, and families, in peace.
