Wide receiver Tyler Maples will transfer from Tennessee.
Maples, a former Class 4A Mr. Football winner at Maryville High School, has been granted a release by UT coach Lane Kiffin, Maryville coach George Quarles confirmed Thursday.
Maples could not be reached for comment Thursday.
At Maryville, he helped the Rebels claim three consecutive Class 4A state championships and was named MVP of the BlueCross Bowl in 2006. Maples was one of three Knoxville-area players who signed with the Vols in 2007, joining former Austin-East star Anthony Anderson and Fulton’s Dennis Rogan, who started all 12 games last season for the Vols.
Maples redshirted in 2007 and made his only appearance in last year’s 34-3 victory over Mississippi State.
Maples’ departure marks the 11th player to either leave the program or be dismissed since Kiffin was introduced as UT’s coach Dec. 1. Of those 11, four players have left since spring practice ended April 18.
Quarterback B.J. Coleman, who announced Thursday he will attend Chattanooga, wide receiver Ahmad Paige, offensive lineman Darris Sawtelle also left the team after spring practice.
Drew Edwards covers University of Tennessee football. He may be reached at 865-342-6274.

I heard about this about 2 weeks ago but thought he may have changed his mind. Never understood why he wasn't given an opportunity. I saw him and Rogers both play in HS and he was easily the better player. Good luck Tyler

100th you idiots.

One more thing, we have worn this Hood thing out and now Maples transfers...What about some good news, what about we offered Hendrix a scholarship?
UTandETSUfan writes:
With all due respect to you Basketball and Maples, I don't see this as "Bad news". I mean, seriously, he wasn't going to be a starter, or even a contender for playing time. I watched the O & W game and we already have a solid 4-5 WR's better than him ATLEAST, not including Nuke or any other signees.
StroVol writes:
Maples was a bad azz! Sorry to see him go
PumpVOL writes:
Maples was not a D1 player...he should have went to CN or UTC right out of HS.
Fulmer got who he wanted out of Maryville with the signing of Maples....He got Douglas, that was always the reason he gave Tyler a scholarship.
Basketball_Jones writes:
I didn't mean it as "Oh no we lose another good player" it was more negative news on the program. Like I said in my previous post where is the headline that we offered Hendrix today?
the10sevol writes:
Or Scroggins, I'm flexible. Hendrix would be relatively close to home, and Scroggins has family in TN. Not holding my breath for Heaps, but with this staff, who knows?
Good luck, TM, go make your mark. GBO

Should have a cast of thousands in the next class at this rate. LK will certainly be able to offer everyone he wants a scholly.
99gator writes:
well, you wanted a new story.
you got one.
don't think this will have much impact on 2009 either.
someone got a count of how many scholarships will be available in 2/10.
golfballs03 writes:
yawn

a question to all of you.....
how many of these guys were not willing to get on the "lane train" and how many were encouraged to find another place to play because they weren't going to get playing time if they stayed.
Basketball_Jones writes:
I think a little of both. Lets actually look at BJ and Maples. BJ goes to UTC, I mean if he were as good as he thought he was, wouldn't he go say to Purdue or Texas AM, same goes for Maples. I really expect to see him at UTC or Carson Newman

Kiffin is running off all the best talent. Eric Berry is next

On the other hand...I talked with Tyler's older brother Ryan about a month ago and he said Tyler seemed to like the new system and was getting along good with the new coaches. I may have to call him and get some inside scoop.

Saw on SportsSouth that florida has renamed their football playing field as Panties Field? Did anyone else see this?
GreerVol22 writes:
StroVol you ignorant slu+.....sorry,... Lord, be with the starving pigmies....It was obvious in the spring game he had not studied the play book. No way he would ever see playing time for CLK.
Regarless of how anyone feels about the defections, if its gonna happen, tis the season.

More details to come in 24 hours so we can make this story totally irrelevant! Newspapers are dead!

There was a movie a few years ago, Shakespear something, and this one character was continually being ask to explain how something was going to work out and he kept replying, "I don't know, its a mystery."
Gator, its a mystery.
Could he have covered kicks?
Probably, but I guess he wanted to catch passes. I am grateful for all his work and wish him good fortune for his future.

Crompton has been busy with the physics departmant and they have come up with the possibilty of a riser being thrown with a football. So you take that comment back.

BigOrangeCrazy writes:
Doesn't matter how many scholarships we have available, you can only sign 25 freshmen scholarships a year.
Could possibly give the rest to walk-ons that have been here more then a year.
gwbask writes:
does anyone know what happened to ut4life? Haven't seen him post on here for a while? He was the Orange swarm, reel them in guy.
the10sevol writes:
Good question, but I don't think there's any question about "getting on the lane train". The program is on the lane train, the train is moving, the players can either get on or be left at the station platform.
The reality is playing time will be doled out according to whomever earns it. Bottom line, that has been said repeatedly.
I really cringe at the thought of a coach "encouraging" a kid to give up his scolly. I would sincerely hope the coaches are being honest with the players about their evals, perhaps even brutally so, but the opportunity is there to work hard until August and then compete your but t off.
the10sevol writes:
Haven't seen him in weeks, maybe he's being waterboarded by dc and zz to find out what he knows...
99gator writes:
that's technically true, but that can be maneuvered around.
you can do something where you sign something like 31 and then apply 6 of those scholarships to the previous year.
they would all be freshman and it would only be on paper.
many schools have signed more than 25 in a year.
old_number1 writes:
Yeah, it was funny the first time he said it. Go back to his earlier remarks, he says it over and over!

Dang, you're fast. That's just what I was going to say!!
BigOrangeCrazy writes:
Yeah "gray shirting" I believe is what they call that. To many crazy NCAA rules for me to fully understand.
We (UT) could pick up 3 or 4 more players that way. But it appears UT will have at least 35 sholarships available.
Hmm? Maybe Lane could trade some of those scholies to Bruce, looks like he's a couple short.
gwbask writes:
lol
BSweet writes:
Not all 11 are transfers. Some of those were players dismissed because of disciplinary problems. I know, something you gator fans aren't used to seeing as Meyer doesn't believe in dismissing players who might help him win, no matter what they've done.
Caveman writes:
Caveman say unfortunate but maybe win-win for all parties.
Next year available slots have increased by approx. 50%; plenty of room on roster for young pigball players who want to play for UT Tribe. Big Ugly Orgeron gonna real in some STUDS!
Fire say NUFF SAID!!! Puff-Puff pass
oh yeah - Orange Swarm :-)
BigOrangeCrazy writes:
Here's scholarship limits and "gray shirt" explained in regards to Ole Miss signing 37 players this year.
If we sign more then 25 that qualify in 2010 then some of them will count towards our 2011 class.
Either way we will have a few extra scholarships for the walk-ons.
From Sporting News
Each school is limited to 25 new scholarships on campus each year. So, if all 37 kids qualified, 12 will have to wait until January to enroll in school. If any of the 37 were already enrolled in school, they could count against the previous year if they used less than 25. Otherwise, they have to "gray shirt", and they will count against the 2010 class.

Anyone have an inside take on this? A current UT student is saying that there are at least murmurs that Maples, Campbell, Hawkins, Brimfield, Nelson, Vereen, Williams, and Shaw could all be goners. If so, how many would that make all total....18...19....30...???
kman29 writes:
why is it that every player who transfers from Tennessee is said by UT fans to not be a "D1 player" in the first place. The guy was a Mr. Football winner. Is the state of Tennessee talent that bad that a Mr. Football winners in both Maples and also Coleman are not D1 material players? Because I saw the same comment regarding Coleman plenty of times. Its a legit question. I honestly do not know a thing about this kid, but find it hard to believe if he was that talented in highschool that he isnt D1 material. That or as I said, Tennessee highschool talent is very bad.

remember the name Jon Bostic. He is Spikes back up and a true freshman. The kid was very impressive throughout spring and a star in the spring game...not to mention a future star at MLB continuing the trend for UF.
76-79 Scott Brantley
80-83 Wilbur Marshall
88-90 Huey Richardson
93-96 James Bates
98-01 Andra Davis
02-04 Channing Crowder
04-06 Brandon Siler
06-09 Brandon Spikes
Next will be Bostic.
rich182x writes:
Looks like we offered Hendrix a scholarship to play QB as well.
kman29 writes:
Yeah because Marcus Thomas wasnt an all american DT was he?
Jamar Hornsby wasnt a 5 star safety out of highschool
Ronnie Wilson wasnt a key player on the offensive line making starts throughout the 2006 season.
Jaques Rickerson wasnt a starting CB for the 2007 team.
Cameron Newton wasnt a key QB as the 2nd QB that Meyer was grooming to take over when Tebow left.
DeWayne Grace wasnt a 5 star CB out of highschool in 2004.
Avery Atkins wasnt a 5 star CB out of highschool in 2005 and a key contributor late in the 05 season in the secondary.
But your right, Meyer doesn't believe in dismissing good players. Learn your facts!
