Wall's relationship with Calipari 'got it overboard'

RALEIGH, N.C. — With another stellar recruit in the fold, Kentucky’s John Calipari is off to a fast start in his work to rebuild the storied men’s basketball program.

The school said John Wall has signed a letter of intent, making the sought-after recruit a late addition to what many already regarded as the top recruiting class in the country. Wall formally announced his decision to play for the Wildcats during a news conference Wednesday afternoon at his school, Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh.

Wall had been pursued by numerous schools including Duke, North Carolina State and Miami, but he said his relationship with Calipari — which began when the coach was at Memphis — might have been the most important factor.

“They all had great academics, a great coach, great players there,” Wall said. “It was a very tough decision, but the relationship with Coach Cal just got it overboard and helped me make my decision to go to the University of Kentucky.”

The 6-foot-4 point guard was named The Associated Press men’s player of the year for North Carolina in March and had been considered by many to be the top prospect in the country. He joins a class that already included DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton, a pair of five-star big men that helped the Wildcats earn the nation’s No. 1 class according to Scout.com.

Dave Telep, Scout.com’s national recruiting director, compared the Wildcats’ recruiting haul to classes inked by North Carolina and Ohio State in 2006. Those groups helped the Buckeyes reach the national championship game in 2007 and were at the core of the Tar Heels’ run to the NCAA title this season.

“This class on paper is as talented as those,” Telep said. “We’ll know exactly how good it is by how many times these guys play on Saturdays and Monday nights in the NCAA tournament.”

The incoming class should bolster a team that went 22-14 last season and lost in the third round of the NIT under Billy Gillispie. All-conference center Patrick Patterson withdrew his name from consideration for the NBA draft and will return next year, though high-scoring guard Jodie Meeks hasn’t announced whether he will return or remain in the draft.

“There’s going to be a lot of expectations,” Wall said. “But as the point guard, I’m going to try to come in and make everybody better and try to win games. I know it’s going to be tough from the beginning because we have a lot of freshmen coming in, and it’s a new team and a new coach. We’ve just got to go in and try to work hard and all of us become better players and make a run at the national championship.”

Wall said he might enter the NBA draft after one season, but it’s not his plan.

“My plan is to go to the University of Kentucky for the next two or three years,” he said. “After that one year, if Coach Cal says that it’s my time to go to the NBA, I’m going to go.”

That's a good pickup for UK.

OTOH, given the reputations of Calamari and the Wildcat boosters, what's the over/under on the first investigation and/or sanction?

We give 'em their annual *ss whipping in football first... then we can talk hoops.

I would rather be a Tennessee fan and have us be irrelavant and lose every single game of the season than be an obvious NC bandwagon fan.

This is why Duke didn't want him anymore. Well "want" him. Everyone could use his talent.

It's like the story of JamesOn Curry from Eastern Alamance. He was highly sought after, offered a scholarship to UNC, Roy Williams got there and still has the scholarship for him, then he gets busted in a sting selling marijuana to an undercover cop. Scholarship gone. Eddie Sutton gave him a chance and he ended up playing at Oklahoma St.
Judging by the type of athletes we've seen go to Memphis (I.E. Tyreke Evans and his "I just let him borrow my car" drive-by shooting), it seems like a great match for him to end up at UK.

Give me a break. Look at the news pal. Football players witness to shooting, basketball players breaking and entering. Stallworth's vehicular manslaughter. UT is just full of angels. Pearl would take Wall quicker than his exwife would take an alimony check.

Coming from an embarrassed Vol Fan this morning (See Smith story), I would probably lay off the "thug" comments toward any school for a while.

A great signee for ky and perhaps a good kid too. But SEC fans get ready for a different kind of player from ky. Cal doesn't recruit the student athlete, he recruits "ballers". These kids are not looking for a degree. And Cal's promise to these kids is not necessarily to have them graduate and get a degree, but to keep them eligible for a year, maybe two, then go pro 'cause by then you've taken all the crip courses to keep you eligible. Cal will sprinkle in a few kids who want a degree, but the players that put ky back on the map will be "ballers".

Not True. All of his players who stayed 4 yrs either graduated or came back the next year to finish. His one and doners of course did not and that was only 2 players in his 9 yrs. Sad I know this , but living here in Memphis u have to kind of keep up with it.

I don't think most ky fans will mind that at all. It comes down to championships. If he gets the one and done's and we hang a few more banners, they will be smiling in the commonwealth!

Clap-clap-clap it is not.

ETNTigerFan writes:

Believe it or not, Cal graduates his players. He even encourages former players to come back and complete their degrees. All but a very few, besides the one and doners, got their degrees from Memphis.

Ok, I may have over-stated, so I'll just say that with the pressure on Cal ($$$) we won't see the recruitment of many student athletes and will probably see his modus operandi closely resemble the former program of Tarkanian & UNLV and just leave it at that. Lots of outlaws but considerable success.
