Tennessee’s John-Patrick Smith, the No. 6 seed in the NCAA men’s singles tennis championships, was upset in the third round by No. 26 Sanam Singh of Virginia, 6-4, 7-5 on Friday in College Station, Texas.
The loss ended Smith’s nine-match winning streak. He finished 36-11 in singles.
“I had my chance to get back at 5-4 in the first set. I had two break points and I didn’t convert,” Smith said. “I was a bit unlucky today. I didn’t really play as well as I had hoped to.”
Smith and Davey Sandgren advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles, beating Boise State’s James Meredith and Kean Feeder, 6-3, 7-5. Next up is seventh-seeded Steve Forman and Cory Parr of Wake Forest.
“We really picked it up towards the end,” Smith said. “We made some good plays and executed well, so I think if we can keep doing that then we should be fine tomorrow.”

There is no such thing as upset in college tennis. They are all about the same, with no shotmaking skills, no creativity, no guts.
