The Tennessee women's tennis doubles team of Caitlin Whoriskey and Natalie Pluskota took a big step Friday at the NCAA championships.
Whoriskey and Pluskota advanced to the quarterfinals by beating the second-ranked doubles team of Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame, 7-6, 6-3 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
By reaching the quarters, Whoriskey and Pluskota became All-Americans, the 13th and 14th in program history. The last Lady Vols to receive the honors were Vilmarie Castellvi, Melissa Schaub and Tammy Encina in 2003.
"This is a huge win and I could not be more proud of how Caitlin and Natalie played today,'' Lady Vols co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said. "One of their goals this entire season has been to become All-Americans. They worked extremely hard all year and it paid off today.
"Combined with our top-10 national ranking that came out earlier today, this win will really help to put Tennessee women's tennis on the map and lead to even greater things in years to come."
The Lady Vols were 10th in the final Campbell/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll Friday, their highest ranking since 2003. They started the season at No. 24.
With the win, Whoriskey and Pluskota improved to 14-6 with 11 of the victories coming against nationally ranked opponents.
