Biddle: Kentucky basketball keeps making news for all the wrong reasons

It wasn't a great day at the beach for Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart.

Oh, Destin's Chamber of Commerce delivered perfect weather for the Southeastern Conference Spring Meetings.

But Barnhart had to suddenly vacate paradise when the NCAA released allegations of violations against Memphis' basketball program. Kentucky Coach John Calipari was in charge of Memphis basketball before Barnhart and UK President Lee Todd handed Calipari the keys to Kentucky's kingdom.

You're right, shouldnt they go after him? I mean, UMASS and now Memphis, no wonder he gets out of town so fast! He definitely should be held accountable for anything that happens under his watch!

gmoneyvol writes:

How do you like it now, UK? You knew he has cheated in the past, and you hired him anyway. If you lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas...

If I read one more article on UK and their obviously con-man Cal, think I'll puke....UK fans, be sure not to step back or you may run over a NCAA Investigator....

I love it. I haven't read enough to suit me. ky basketball has been both the most successful basketball program and dirtiest basketball program in SEC history, but the dirt part was always handled with the least amount of commentary (much to the glee of the classless ky fans) and frankly most people know very little or nothing about what went on behind the Rupp, Hall, and Sutton tenures. I have lots of favorites (the $50-100 bill handshakes was always one of my favorites) and I hope someone with the media will revisit those wonderful wildcat moments and share it with all of us. Anyway, here's hoping that slime-ball cal gets his and further's the tarnished and little known truths of ky basketball.

They are sticking it to Calipari!

And then Bob Ley just owned Josh Pastner. I swear I saw him blush (!!!!) on TV. What an amateur...

Bruce Pearl would have never been as shady as Cal or as clueless as Pastner.

I know the trolls are going to say how I'm stupid and Pearl can't coach, but you never hear about shady stuff like this coming out of the UT program - just boneheads making funny Youtube vids. I think I can live with that.

Are you kidding me? With all the trouble your football players have been in, you have the audacity to say that? Speaking of which, didn't your FB team just sign a recruit who raped his cousin or something? Now that's good PR for a university.

And, as far as Pastner, he already had the reputation of being one of the top recruiters in the country. Why do you think Calipari had him on his staff? Pastner has also assembled an experienced coaching staff, including the guy who is now the former trainer for the Denver Nuggets -- ever heard of them?

And if Pearl couldn't get any further than the Sweet 16 with some of the talent he's had -- and he's had some talented guys -- then I wouldn't be bragging about him just yet either.

I think its more that Kentucky is now under the microscope. If these allegations turn out to be true then Kentucky would become the most closely scrutinized program in the nation, until Cal was no longer the coach. Kentucky has not done anything wrong, but if this turns out to be true, they would be served well to just get rid of him.

Not knocking Pearl, but he was obviously very clueless on Ramar Smith.

My personal favorite was the "exploding" package (Emery Express) of cash bound for Chris Mills in 88'. You simply must make balls of cash impenetrable.

Here's the deal CatScratch. I'm sure you've heard the old saw "if it walks like a duck" etc.

Guilty or not, Coach Cal will soon become the 1st coach in NCAA history (and that's been awhile) to have 2 teams vacate Final Four appearances.

This is no accident. Does the name World Wide Wes mean anything to you? It will and soon.

Most of my friends and associates are Cat fans and I know how desperate they are to get back in the game. They're worried and you should be as well.

Well, he kicked him to the curb, didn't he? Sounds like he got the clue, and acted on it.

You can't predict what that player will then do a year after kicking him off the team...

Where are all the Tiger High trolls that used to come here? A few months ago they were here barking about how Memphis State was such an elite program, blah, blah, blah. Then, they got stomped by Mizzou in the tourney, their genius coach left, they got turned down by the first 5 or 6 choices (including Pearl), they had to settle for Peter Brady, and now they are facing possible NCAA sanctions. It would be classic if they have to forfeit that whole fluke season when they choked in the NC game. That's what happens when you play an ineligible player.

Bruce will own that joke for a coach you now have (Peter Brady), just as he owned Saint Cal. Have fun on probation, and having to forfeit all your games from that fluke season.

That was a good one, murrayvol. Straight out of the movie "Blue Chips".

TarHeels, you are so completely lost. There is a lot of positive about UT sports these days. I was reading an article in one of the sports magazines today at the magazine rack at the local Krogers. The guy writing the article wrote that Tenn. football would be a top five program within three years and there to stay. I think his words were, anyone who doesn't believe that is a complete fool. Well when the shoe fits. He went on to say that Tenn had put together one of the greatest coaching staffs ever assembled in college football and that they not only were probably the best recruiting staff but probably the best x & o staff as well.

You can also believe what you will about Tenn basketball but it is a program on the rise. Unless you use the Calipari tactics of free giveaways to come play, it takes a few years of recruiting to build the type team a coach wants. Watch and see the next couple of years and all of the Pearl bashing will be gone. Well maybe a few fools will still be doing it....oh yeah that's you....continue on Tarheel.

Kentucky basketball: a tradition of winning built on a foundation of corruption by Adolph corRUPPt.

This is a good time to remind readers about the history of Kentucky basketball (things they don't teach kids in Kentucky):

(1) Kentucky basketball program was first to ever receive NCAA death penalty. A defiant Rupp said: "They have found a way to beat Kentucky. They have cancelled our season."
(2) Players charged with point-shaving scandal in another incident, in late 1950s, I think.
(3) Program in such trouble during Eddie Sutton era that Sports Illustrated put out an issue with cover page reading simply: "Kentucky's Shame" (To my knowledge, Sutton was never in trouble with the NCAA before or after coaching at Kentucky.) UNLV's Jerry Tarkanian said: "The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky right now that they put Cleveland State on probation another three years."

This is just what I remember without research.

Thanks for the refresher, and there were indeed many more. One that just came to mind was the free meals at Cliff Hagan's restaurant.....all while he was the AD! A truly dirty program that could never be surpassed, and now cal will bring his expertise to further enhance it's slimy history. Ya gotta love it!

Don't fret about Kentucky Basketball...they have survived over these many years by simply shrugging off any allegations that come their way. With a battery of high priced lawyers always on hand...The basketball cats are well protected from any accusations that come their way...Get this: With a meeting with NCAA officials coming up soon, their new Calapari.."Or coach Cal", has just taken a trip to China...and will not be able to attend...but he will talk by phone to the officals..by phone. Kentucky basketball is REALLY big in the blue grass state...Cat basketball fans are so rabid about their teams that Vol football fans are mere kittens in comparsion.
