DESTIN, Fla. — Lane Kiffin, meet all THE fellow SEC football coaches you’ve called out and insulted.
Boys, meet Lane Kiffin, the new Tennessee coach.
Kiffin’s first face-to-face meeting this week with the rest of the league’s coaches at the business meetings that ended Friday was interesting, to say the least.
During the two days the coaches met, the 34-year-old Kiffin maintained — maybe naively — that he didn’t think “there would any hard feelings” from some of the coaches and their schools that he ripped during recruiting.
“I would expect everybody to be professional and realize each of us have a job to do, and each job is different,” Kiffin said. “Do I love everything I had to do to get us to this point? No, I don’t. But we had to make an immediate impact.”
There hasn’t been an SEC coach in recent history that has entered the league with guns blazing and mouth running like Kiffin. So far, he has:
Called Florida coach Urban Meyer “a cheater” on signing day (and almost immediately apologized after a reprimand from the SEC).
Told South Carolina recruit Alshon Jeffery (who had witnesses) that he “would be pumping gas for a living” if he signed with the Gamecocks.
Said that Tennessee assistant Lance Thompson, a former Alabama assistant, was responsible for the Crimson Tide’s great signing class. Said Kiffin, “Nick Saban should have started his press conference by saying, ‘Our great class that we signed ... I’d really like to thank Lance because Lance signed eight of those guys.”
Signed a high school player who participated in a kidnapping and aggravated rape six years ago as a 13-year old.
Insulted a small Florida town where he recruited a player, then apologized to town officials and the local high school principal.
Committed two secondary recruiting violations, yet signed three of the nation’s top 150 recruits after signing day, including Bryce Brown, the nation’s No. 1 high school running back.
Told Sports Illustrated he had fired support staff people, that “they had to go because they weren’t going to make it, and they knew it.” Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton denied Kiffin had fired anybody.
Kiffin doesn’t care about the negative publicity he has received. To him, any news is good news, as long as it puts Tennessee in the national spotlight.
“There aren’t any six-year plans any more,” Kiffin said. “You can’t write, ‘They will be good six years from now.’ We had to make an immediate impact and get players immediately.
“So to sit back and say, ‘Well, maybe we’ll take it easy and sit back in the weeds, sign a few players here and there, and maybe next year or the year after that we’ll get a top 10 class,’ we didn’t have time for that.”
His fellow coaches, such as Houston Nutt of Ole Miss and Bobby Petrino of Arkansas, are trying to understand Kiffin’s gamesmanship, especially his opening salvo on Meyer at a signing day breakfast in Knoxville.
“My first thought was he was thinking, ‘I’m strictly with Tennessee people and I’m going to fire them up,’ ” Nutt said. “But anything you say is going national, via blog, via Internet.”
While Nutt understood Kiffin’s approach, he also said that coaches have long memories.
“You can’t help it,” Nutt said. “And your players know more than you do, more word for word, of what was said.”
Like Florida safety Ahmad Black, who told ESPN.com a couple of months ago, “Not being cocky or anything, but we’ve beaten them (Tennessee) four years in a row ... by a lot, too. Taking shots at our coach is like taking shots at us. We’re family. It’s personal now.”
Petrino said he has known Kiffin since the time they were briefly together on the staff of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I might know a lot about his closets, so he better not insult me,” Petrino said jokingly. “We ate lunch together almost every day, so I got to know him well.
“But that part of him” — Kiffin’s bravado — “I didn’t know. That surprised me a bit. Some things he’s said I’ve laughed about it.
“The thing you find out in this conference is how competitive it is, how passionate all the fans are, the pressure to win. It’s all about recruiting, so if what he has been doing helps recruiting, maybe it’s worth it. But we need to do things with class and dignity. The SEC always has.”
Then there was the testy exchange between South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and Kiffin in front of waiting media late Tuesday afternoon.
Kiffin had said at a press conference earlier Tuesday that he never had received an apology from Spurrier after Spurrier publicly questioned whether Kiffin had passed the NCAA recruiting test before he began calling prospects when he was hired.
When media later informed Spurrier about Kiffin’s remark, he saw Kiffin, who was waiting to get on an elevator.
“I didn’t accuse you of cheating,” Spurrier said, while pointing at Kiffin. “I said, ‘Is it permissible to call recruits before he’s announced as head coach, before you take the test?’”
Spurrier turned to the reporters and added, “He took the test online and I didn’t know you could do that. I thought you had to take the test on campus, then get announced.”
Kiffin, clearly embarrassed, mumbled something inaudibly. When the elevator finally showed up, Kiffin, Petrino, Kentucky’s Rich Brooks and Auburn’s Gene Chizik got in along with Spurrier.
Spurrier said again as the elevator doors closed, “I didn’t say he broke the rules. I just said, ‘Is it permissible to make calls?’ ”
Meyer and Saban wouldn’t say much about Kiffin.
“Everybody has to have their own way of handling things and heavens knows I’ve made my share of mistakes with the media,” Saban said. “But we try to represent our organization in a first-class way and do it with loyalty and integrity.”
Though it’s obvious Kiffin has few friends among SEC coaches — he didn’t stay and eat lunch in the meeting room with his fellow coaches and didn’t converse with them in the halls during meeting breaks — he doesn’t seem to care.
While his approach to Tennessee’s job has not been tried by any new UT coach in any sport — even bubbly men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl — Hamilton doesn’t mind.
“Lane has energized our fan base,” Hamilton said. “He’s not the guy he’s portrayed to be in the press.”
Kiffin doesn’t care how he’s portrayed, just as long as he has attention focused on a program expected to struggle in his first year.
So far, judging from his recruiting class, his response from junior prospects and from his own players, they like the fact he shoots from the hip and sprays verbal buckshot across the SEC.
“Kids these days respond a lot to confidence,” Kiffin said. “They see how our staff doesn’t back down, and they like that confidence and energy.”

Uh......is the KNS also going to let us know who won the 1964 presidential election too? When does old news become old enough so the KNS doesn't think they have to rehash it again.....and again......and again? Whew.......

Personally I hope Kiffin will shut up and just coach. I'm not one that thinks this will all be OK if we win big, unless the stupid comments stop now. Spurrier is a great coach, but I'm glad he was at Florida and not UT because I didn't feel a lot of his comments had much class - and Kiffin has been making Spurrier look like a saint.
He needs to figure out that he respresents our university and our state, and he should do that with class. And for those that think it's OK, you are probably the same ones that rip Spurrier, Saban, Meyer, etc. for comments that aren't as bad as what Kiffin has made - but they are bad comments because they come from opposing coaches.

Just don't make it too personal cause the Vols and fans are a family too.Listen to this thug if anybody out there beat someone for 4 years in a row who in there right mind would care about what they said.I hope the fans storm the field on the Florida players when they come to Knoxville and get into a brawl. GO WWE on em!

First in number of players arrested in a coaches first 4 years at a school.
First to have a coach And his daughter arrested.
First to have a coach that lies to recruits about other teams not wanting them.
First to tell rat out players on bogus SAT results because they signed elsewhere.
First to tell other players that TeBow was being recruited to play linebacker.
First to have their football HC recruit for the ladies gym team.
First to have their Heisman Trophy winner call recruits.
First to send their QB to see other recruits.
First to cry to Silve that CLK correctly calls their coach a cheater.
First to have a "little mermaid principal" pipelining high school kids to FU
Yes sir...impressive list of firsts......I can see why the trolls are so proud.

All this is, is old news. Kiffin got a great recruiting class and all the verbal jawing back and forth is not new. The only reason it would still be in the news is due to the news media keeps bringing it back up.
1) We already know what was said and who it was directed at.
2) We already know there has been somewhat of a talent drop off and that UT is thin at several positions going into this season.
3) We already know who quit and who was shown the door because they were not good enough to get UT back to a position of being competitive in the conference.
4) WE ARE ALREADY TIRED of hearing the S.S.D.D. news, so unless you have something new to say just be quite.
The summer drought is on until practice begins.
Here's hoping there's no police blotter news during the summer months regarding the Vols.

I'm with you pal, unfortunately those who typically devote time to the boards here don't think as we do. I may read the first few comments, but with the 'lopers, societally blinded Kiffin lovers, and lack of intelligent commenting, I'm mainly just reading the articles these days. This one seems to be a repeat of others, what a surprise. These are my Vols, and I appreciate an organization with class first; everything else comes second. Seems odd doesn't it? Most don't understand now, but will later in life, including Kiffin. I wonder how many Kiffin lovers here actually attended UTK. I'm all for Kiffin, just wish he'd shut his trap and show a little respect for his industry cohorts.

everything in this article has been lifted (plagiarized) from the associated press article that ran early last week or the chris lowe espn column from last wednesday. the quotes and word choice are identical, the basic article structure is the same. there is not one element of this story that wasn't in print 3 or 4 days before Roy Higgins "compiled" his story. not only is this all old news, but Roy Higgins' journalistic ethics are questionable.

Dude....... Its football you dont play the game nice. You obviously didnt play in high school. All it is is trash talk. That what rivalries always have and always will be. Coaches and players talk trash everyday. Everyone keeps saying he hasnt did anything yet. He pulled some big name recruits right out form under some big time coaches noses on signing day. I would say that doing something. If the results arent there this year (I think we will all be shocked with how well our team plays this season). They will definintly be here next year. Dont just look at the players this is one of the top 5 coaching staffs in football. We will be ready.

I really don't care if Urban leaves after the season as long as Tebow does. Tebow makes that offense work. Your a fool if you think Brantly is going to walk in continue the strong play. I will say that Tebow is a once in a lifetime player. Usually when that player leaves, a huge fallout occurs. Get ready because your not going to understand why you suddenly can't get a yard when you need it.

Everyone needs to understand about gatorz5 and his outspoken mouth on our site. I am from the great state of Tennessee and will be orange beyond death I live in florida. In florida these people stop on green lights, go on red lights. When it rains all you hear is alot of sirens because they cant drive. The way that they get recuits is simple, in florida the saying goes as follows: come to florida on vacation, leave on probation, come back on violation. Once they come back on they are given the order to play for florida. The people here are rude and not very bright. Most say that they dont like black people but go to the beach to get brown. when beaten up by Ole Miss there was no (we got beat) they come up with lots of excuses as to why they lost. So, great fans of the mighty orange is it truely worth even listening to those clowns. Let us not forget that spurriers system was figuered out and Tennessee chased him out of college football and soon will be the fall of urban

All of us Tennessee fans know that a lot of the SEC coaches have no use for Lane Kiffin. Hopefully they'll have even less use for him after we take no prisoners this fall.
We also know that gatorz5 is the king of Flor-Idiots. Hopefully he'll go back into his pit after the Vols take care of business in Gainesville this fall.
