Smith, Chism honored by SEC coaches

The SEC unveiled its sixth annual men’s basketball coaches preseason All-SEC teams Monday, and a pair of Tennessee seniors earned inclusion. Guard/forward Tyler Smith was one of six unanimous first-team selections, while forward/center Wayne Chism landed on the eight-man second team.

A total of 27 different players received votes for the teams and Tennessee, Kentucky, Ole Miss and South Carolina led all schools with two selections each.

This was the second official first-team preseason All-SEC award for Smith, who last month was named to the media’s squad. Chism, however, was left off the media’s All-SEC listing.

Smith and Chism both were named to last seasons’ SEC Tournament All-Tournament Team after leading the Volunteers to the championship game. Both are also members of Tennessee’s 1,000-point club. A native of Pulaski, Tenn., Smith enters his final college season ranked 39th in school history with 1,079 points. Chism, a native of Jackson, Tenn., ranks 36th with 1,141 points.

That a way Weez! Now back it up and have a monster season! Let's not camp out behind the arc too much mmmkay?

This is better anyway. This is the coaches' poll. They're the ones who know the players. What does the media know? Congratulations Tyler and Wheezer!

Because he will more than likely be the first pick in the NBA draft

I still don't understand Ogilvy being first team and Chism being second. Head to head, Chism has outplayed A.J. every time they've met.

Betting on the come.

I would pick Chism over the Aussie. Chism owns him.

I could be wrong, but, IIRC, both Bernard King and Allan Houston made either 1st- or 2d-team All-SEC before they ever played a game. All I can say is that if Wall is as good as they were, he must be really something!

I agree completely. In fact, I can only remember a couple of games where I even really noticed Ogilvy was on the floor. Of course, I haven't seen all that many Vandy games, but I just don't ever remember seeing him really show out against any of their bigger rivals like UT, UK, and UF.

Chism had dominated Ogilvy! Wall hasn't even played a game! Hopson will tear it up this year!

The thing that irks me about these selections and the rest of them is that Chism is clearly a better player than the kid from Vandy! It's one thing for it to happen if Chism hadn't shown up last year in the SEC championship, but for him to show up and make them put him on the Tourney Team and then do this to him makes me one thing, mad they are disrepecting him and happy as a pig in Do-Do for the way he is gonna play all year long with a great big chip on his shoulder! It may possibly be the best thing to happen to our team so far into this young pre-season!Bust 'em up Wayne, you are "Da Man"!

Er,sorry,I guess that makes me two things<LOL!

Preach on...

He has absolutely OWNED Ogilvy who seems to always make these things.

I think this list illustrates that UT has over emphasized the importance of recruiting against Memphis. That is... (1) most of Memphis' players have come from outside the state. (2) Those players in Memphis tend to go to Miss schools.

Looking at those All-Star teams, it seemed that there was a lot of pretty good talent on there! Maybe the SEC will regain a bit of national stature this year. If so, the Vols will benefit more by winning the SEC this year than they would have last year.

The complaint was not that Patterson, Vernardo, or anyone else weren't good, it was that OGILVY was picked over Chism for the first team. Surely you would agree that Chism has had it all over Ogilvy whenever they have met. I do agree that pre-season team rankings and all-star teams are meaningless, but, IMHO, Chism has earned way more in the way of such recognition than he has received. Still,I hope he uses the snub as motivation to show all the pollsters how wrong they were, though not, of course, at the cost of team success.

Maybe you haven't seen him since HS. I'm pretty sure Memphis would take him NOW. I have a feeling you and the other Memphis fans will see all of Chism and Hopson you can handle New Year's Eve.

glad to see someone finally figured out the state of Tennessee has some talent in it. Ky has long recognized that and has won some championsips with Tennessee boys.

The Memphis basketball team has been good but they have been illegal as well so in the end what have they accomplished. Shame thats about it. I wish them well but good grief the one sport they have and it stays in trouble
