Tennessee best .500 team in country

News Sentinel blogger Michael Silence points to multiple polls to make his case that Tennessee is the best team with a .500 record.

Course, he went to Indiana where such football statistical trivia is meaningful.

settle down over there... Stephens will be our QB next year, Bray will need a year or two

I am disappointed that the polls can;t see how strong we are...can;t even get to the top of "others receiving votes". And SC is still rated above us in one of them. What a crock. After playing bama and gators as well as we did in their home fields I don;t see us being scared of any team in this country. Crompton, Kiffin, and all other players and coaches rock!

He was not held out he was a no-show at practice. Issues have been brewing and Kiffin will address this on Tuesday. Does not look good.

If UT wins out and AL and Fl both win out then UT becomes the number 2 team in the SEC East and the Number 4 overall SEC team not a bad finish! Plus it will ensure a bid to either the Cotton Bowl or the Capital One bowl!

Are you coaching quarterbacks now? If Stephens was the man he would be getting more playing time.

No one has established the fact that we wasn't. You cannot take KNS word for it.

I’m certainly not going to brag about being .500 either, but I AM satisfied with the progress of our team given the lack of depth and talent we have. Not to mention that the team has done all this while trying to learn another new system. I’m not satisfied with being .500, but I am satisfied with the direction we’re going in!

Go Vols!!!

We all thought there would be growing pains this year. A new staff, a new system, player's leaving the program. I would rather look forward than to look backward.

Agree with the above take. Let's not lose touch with reality. While our recruiting has me excited about the future of UT football, most experts say it will be 2011 when we become a real contender. I still don't see us going down into Oxford in a couple of weeks and coming out with a win. With their disappointing season so far, they are looking at that game with us to circle as a must-win for them. Ole Miss has always hated us a lot more than we hate them.

doesn't matter.... the game is much quicker than high school, and Bray is not ready for SEC football yet. He may be the starter by the end of the year, but not in the beginning. i wish it were different, but Stephens will be the starter come next year. Face it!

Understand your excitement, but don't become unrealistic. Alabama's stadium seats 92,500 now and is expanding by the start of next year to 102,000; Georgia seats 92,000, LSU 92,000, Fla. around 92,000, so there are a lot of large stadiums in this conference.

At the same time, we are a much improved team. But even with our improvement, we need to keep in mind that the only thing we can be satisfied with is winning. "Best .500 Team" is not something I want to tell my friends.

That would be a fantastic accomplishment for a 1st year team/coaching staff. For Coach "O". would love to see us surprise Old Miss with the black jerseys.

Our kids who make it through this 1st year may become as famous as Bear Bryant's "Junction Boys" at A&M..."Kiffin's Boys". Sorry 'bout that Brandon, D Morley, Nuke, et al. GBO!

I agree jd, but don't let it trouble you. Just be happy that we are figurng things out as a team, improving week to week, have the right mindset each week that yes we can win, and then beginning to back it up. Strong possibility to be 8-4 end of year and I think any of us would have donated a nad to see that kind of record after last season.

Marc,

Did you happen to notice Ken Adams turned Meyer and Florida down. Atleast Ken will be able to run some routes at Tennessee instead of always blocking for a Florida Quarterback. Smart move Ken to play in our NFL style offense. Great to have you on board! GBO!

Obviously no one is satisfied being .500. However, if you look where this team was after the Auburn game it's amazing we're now 4-4 and playing as good as any team in the country. I now believe we will win out and because of how well we travel...will get a New Years Day bowl game.

I doubt that Stephens will ever again take a meaningful snap for Tennessee. I imagine that Simms will commit and he will be our starter if Bray is not ready next year. However, I would not rule out Bray.

A quick glance showed the D is giving up less than 15 ppg. The bump comes with ST and Offense give ups. And we can expect the 15 ppg to just keep dropping, if the team continues to play lights out like they have.

Being called the best .500 team in the nation is equivalent to saying the Volunteers are the Best of the Worst. This article is an insult.

If Kiffin had spent more time coaching and organizing rather than running his mouth and blaming the SEC officials for all of his problems, we might be the best 6-2 team in the nation.

i agree, and i think stephens will be even better than crompton is playing right now, he'll have a full year with this coaching staff under his belt. and he'll be a senior, a veteran with some experience. and this just in...the kids gotta lazer arm. Plus if this staff could turn crompton around the way they have, there's no telling what they can do with the talent of nick stephens. I'm in no hurry whatsoever to rush tyler bray into the offense, our O will be fine with stephens, bryce brown, david oku, and our 2 leading receivers likely returning next year. oh and did i mention we're getting the 2nd ranked kicker in the nation? michael palardy, so we won't be losing anymore of those bama type games anymore either. And you know our defense is going to be lights out with this incredible recruiting class, especially on the D-line, and with monte kiffin an nfl legent coaching them. i'll go out on a limb and say the vols will contend for an SEC championship NEXT YEAR!!
