When You're Strange: A rare trip to Oxford

Tennessee and Ole Miss were charter members of the SEC in 1933. They've met 62 times on a football field. But only three times have the Vols journeyed to Oxford, Miss., to play the Rebels in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Saturday will be No. 4.

Ole Miss has done things a little differently than most. It wasn't until the past 20 years that the Rebels began to fully enjoy the benefits of a steady diet of home games in the truest sense.

Of the 62 meetings with Tennessee, 29 were in Knoxville. The Rebels came to Knoxville eight consecutive years from 1927-34 to get a taste of Robert Neyland.

ive been a vol fan since 1967 and the 1st game i ever saw in person was in oxford when the vols were o-6 i believe it was the mid 1980s anyway it started raining at 1/2 time and some rebel fans gave me and my wife their spare umbrella even though we were winning !

Made one trip there with friends in a rented RV. Went down to the small town of Oxford. Friendly people and good-looking women.

Usually too much Orange steam on the field for Ole Miss.

The Grove is impressive with a lot of dressed-up fans.

Would recomend it for anyone.

Maybe Vol-Kiffinway Stadium could be the new name. I miss the old days when Ole Miss, UK and Vandy rounded out our season. You could usually count on ending up going 3-0.

This prediction looks good for Tennessee, the Dumbman is always wrong on his predictions. Don't go away mad, just go away. Fulmer had his day in the sun, but, that sunset has fallen. Lane is now in the sun, and hopefully for at least 10 years. GO VOLS!!!

Great fans, the last time we played down there, I was invited to the Grove. I have never been treated nicer by the Mississippi fans.

Ole Miss is a good team and the Vols better be ready! OP is haveing some of the same struggles UT was having early on this season: inconsistency on offense which has led to good D being on the field too long and wearing down by the 4th qtr. Its great some starters got to rest the 2nd half vs Memphis and heel those minor injuries. I would say that Coach O will have this team fired up for this one! Snead has not handled pressure from opposing defenses well this season and I predict the Vol D front to have their best game in Oxford Sat. Go Vols!!

For the most part, all of the Ole Miss fans I have met were classy folks. Hopefully the Vol fans who make the trip will show class as well. This is a big game for our bowl chances and recruiting as well. Lots of potential in Miss.

GO VOLS!!

This is the same Ole Miss team that scored 10 points against South Carolina, right?

I think the people in charge of your medication need to decrease the dosage. You seem to be a bit more delusional than usual.

No, seems like the normal level of delusion to me. Sad case; none of the meds seem to have worked. I guess Ron White is right--you can't fix stupid!

A lesson I learned weeks ago and although his posts are meant to P.O. the good folks on this site;please refrain from replying; the football season is too short to have to still deal with the BS

If my memory serves me correctly, I think that game was in 1989...I think, not for sure...We started off 0-6 and I told my grandparents that we were gonna win the rest of our games..AND we did!!!

HE IS ONE HECK OF A RECRUITER THOUGH..AND THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!! As far as him not being able to coach a lick, maybe he just wasn't meant to be a head coach..I think he is an excellent assistant..Not every coach is meant to be a head coach!!!!!

Do you not have anything good to say about Tennessee at all??? Next year, if they have a great record(like at this point maybe only one loss), then will you have something good to say about them??? Then again.....they may not have any losses at all, but I'm sure you,Mr.Negative, will find something to complain about....

I probably should have ignored his posts, but I don't put up with people like him...I have NO patience for them!!! I tried to be nice in voicing my opinion of him. Anyway, he has no business being on here.

The grove is awesome! I was there with a friend that went to Ole Miss for one of those SEC school versus "Pansie State" games and was decked out in orange. They are all class and will go out of their way to be sure their visitors have a good time. They through so much alcohol at me I don't even remember the game It's not Knoxville, but it is still SEC tradition at its finest.
