The News Sentinel has received the contract of Lady Vols' head basketball coach Pat Summitt.

Summitt in February signed the contract extension that will keep her at Tennessee through 2014, which would be her 40th season as Lady Vols coach.

Nice contract for Pat. I'd like to have her job just for the base pay and the football ticket perks. :) Seriously though, she is deserving of such a contract due to her proven loyalty to UT and outstanding performance as head coach. I hope to see her here past her 40th anniversary as head coach of the Lady Vols. It just wouldn't be the same without her.

Pat deserves every penny for all the favorable attention she has brought UT for decades now. She is arguably the best-known women's coach ever, in any sport. After she retires, she could make more money than any of us ever dreamed of, simply as a motivational speaker.

PS: I also think the LVs will be close to their accustomed heights this year if everyone stays(Kelley)/becomes(Vicky) healthy.

So sensitive... do you play football or basketball?

There isn't enough money to compensate Pat for what she has 'paid forward' for the university, WCBB and woman's sports.

Just consider the legacy she's set in motion with players in the pro leagues and coaches -- and the future players THEY will influence and so on...to say nothing of those players who make a difference totally outside of basketball in part because of what they learned from Pat and this program.

Truly a person who has made and continues to make an impact that reaches far beyond the stated duties of her job and the plethora of wins and championships (and those aren't too shabby in and of themselves!).

You people are delusional. She should be paid market value around six figure mark, not seven figure. Only in Knoxville and Storrs do people think that womens bball is relevant. How pathetic!!

Look in the mirror and you'll see pathetic.

Coach Summitt's worth is PRICELESS, period.
GO LADY VOLS!!!

If it ain't your money, then it ain't your business.

That's exactly what I mean about these writers who MISS the real story. This (LV vs Baylor) is season-opening game. Important game, big game for women's basketball. Why not get a REAL story in print for fans instead of this dribble. For pete's sake, do some research. Give us a story on Baylor vs. Lady Vols and get the heck off this salary stuff. Whatever Pat earns is HER business and she deserves it. You guys just want to get some junk started with the lopers and the sexists who whos.

How about writing for the Lady Vol fan for a change. We don't want to hear how Pat is calling out this or that player for slacking. Put some meat into a story of fan interest. If you've forgotten how, contact some of the young, eager journalist who can remember the rules of writing a real human interest story.

Given what I have already said about Pat's salary and assuming that the LV basketball program actually pays for itself--an arguable assumption at best--it is good to bear in mind that the football and, to a lesser extent, men's basketball programs pay for EVERYTHING ELSE that goes on in UT sports--both for men and women--PLUS donates millions each year to the university's academic programs.

Kiffin and Pearl ALSO deserve what they get in today's admittedly crazy coaching market. Kiffin is only about mid-range in pay for SEC football coaches, and the football team may well finish THIRD in the SEC in his FIRST year. Pearl's entire contract is paid for just out of the INCREASE in attendance, merchandise sales, and TV and tournament revenue since he has been here.

Um, well, THIS article is about Pat's salary. However, GO LADY VOLS--BEAT BAYLOR!!! Feel better now?

Agree with the part about Pat but DISAGREE with Kiffin and Pearl!!! Kiffin will prove in the next few years that he is worth every penny and I believe he has this year, which was discussed in other posts...Pearl has already proven that he is worth every penny...He has won the East 3 outta 4 years and 1 regular season SEC championship AND HE HAS HAD UT IN THE BIG DANCE EVRY YEAR...plus he has recruited great talent..just look at the team this year...YOU MUST HAVE BLINDERS ON IF U CAN'T SEE THAT!!!

You call yourself a Vol, but you sure don't act like it!!

We are so lucky to have her and we pay her well. Sounds like a good deal for everybody. She loves her job, and is thought of as the gold standard in Women's basketball, if not all of basketball. I cannot say enough about this woman. I'm very proud and have been since 1980 when we were cutting through Stokely and saw her running the team with some ladders. We were good athletes as the time, but I remember thinking.....OMG I wonder if I could do that.....I've never worried about them being prepared again. right now she has one of the biggest coaching challenges she has ever had. I can't wait to see how she pulls this one off. I wonder if the girls are still washing their own stuff, and if they have access to the locker room yet....Pat's tough.....No question.....I'm glad I'm on this side of it..............

Let me re-phrase my last post...I was just stating the facts to backup my opinion(especially on the basketball part because that is the topic of discussion).

where is she going????????????

98reax writes:

If you put aside your preconceived notions regarding (women's sports) and consider we, The University of Tennessee, are and have been for decades, the greatest name, greatest program with, inarguably, THE GREATEST basketball coach in the country, there's no salary sufficient. Whatever Pat Summitt gets she pays back to the university, the game and to society in general. It's not like she takes the money and wallows in it. She works her tail off 24/7. Everything about Pat Summitt is about making others better.

Now at the risk of ending on a negative note, if Tennessee Lady Vol Basketball should become suspect, if Pat should compromise the integrity of the program by stooping to illegal recruiting tactics, or allowing the athletes to remain undisciplined, we might have reason to complain.

Whenever we get to questioning how Pat "is too hard on her players," look into the college sports scene of criminal activity. You won't have to look too far to see that discipline, quick and swift, is always better than a slap on the hand followed by a pat on the back.
