Climer: When Bobby Johnson talks, the SEC should listen

— When Florida Coach Urban Meyer forked over $30,000 last week for criticizing SEC officials, that money went to one of the conference office's pet projects — the McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award.

Something tells me the SEC powers-that-be never considered making a contribution to the First Amendment Center.

Welcome to the speak-no-evil world of the SEC. Call it what you will but a gag order is in place. By decree of Commissioner Mike Slive, if you are a coach, player or support personnel, thou shalt not publicly criticize officials at the risk of a fine, a suspension or both.

Hilarious

Personally, I hope Slive sticks around to witness Tennessee's hostile takeover of the SEC. All the favortism he has shown to Florida will come back and bite him, and I look forward to seeing the look on his face when he has to hand Lane Kiffin the SEC Championship trophy instead of a reprimand.

Lol.. Slive does indeed march to the beat of his own drum. Just so happens that the drum is orange and blue, and his sticks are crimson. Not to mention that the march is called the goose step.

The whole idea of one man playing god over an organization as important as the SEC, or for that matter the NFL or MLB is wrong. Too much power and influence. At best there should be a committee or board with maybe a chairman to break a tie. That at least would remove the appearance of it being guided by one person's personal pet peeves. Slive is seeming more and more like an egomaniac.

Amen to that.

I live down here in Bammer territory and have been stirring the pot wondering who's going to get the calls when Alabama and Florida play each other. Or will we finally see one straight up game in the conference in 2009?

Come reprimand this, Saliva.

It is my understanding that the university presidents of the SEC schools voted unanimously for the penalty. My question is, why in he!! did the president of the University of Tennessee ever vote for said penalty? I haven't liked him from the first day he took over the job and this just enforces that dislike!! GBO!!! Beat the Rebs!!

I thought that Miles went belly up on his team after the zebras overrulled the interception. It almost looked like he was saying, "OK, The officials give it to Alabama this year and to us next year. That's fair. I accept that."

I looked it up and saw that there are 8 or 9 'associate commisioners'. So it could be that Slive doesn't have as much to say about it as it appears. I would hope that one man doesn't always have the final say. If he is bound by the wishes of the majority of the university presidents that's another thing.

It is good to see someone proposing solutions to this problem. But I disagree with the very first part of your post. People generally feel more frustrated when their channels of free speech are closed. So I hope that the media does not start censoring this subject.

I bet he'd get fined if he directed his "die you gravy sucking pigs" cheer toward the officials.

Concerning fuher Slive...we need to remember the SEC AD's and University Presidents give him his clout. Seems to me the well heeled boosters of the various schools need to let it be known that we don't care for Slive's Castro or Chavez tactics. That would bring change rather quickly.
