— Vanderbilt fans hoped this year's team would be comparable to last year's team that won seven games, including a victory in the Music City Bowl.

This year's team does resemble one of Bobby Johnson's squads, but it's his first Vanderbilt team in 2002.

That team finished 2-10 and is his only team that failed to win an SEC game. The Commodores also suffered a particularly embarrassing loss to Middle Tennessee State, which was 0-5 at the time. Wins were over Connecticut, in its first season as a full-fledged Football Bowl Subdivision team, and Furman, a Football Championship Series team.
