KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson is looking for a happy end to a dreadful season.
The Commodores are hoping to avoid finishing winless in the Southeastern Conference since 2002, Johnson's first season.
"We've got one more week, and it's an extremely important week for our football program to have a positive ending and lead us into the offseason and some positive things for spring practice," Johnson said.
It won't be easy. After playing 11 straight games without a bye week, the Commodores (2-9, 0-7 SEC) will be playing in Knoxville against a Tennessee team that's looking for its own positive ending.
The Volunteers (5-5, 2-4) are trying to rebound from the biggest setback of their rebuilding process under first-year coach Lane Kiffin. The Vols had a couple of narrow losses early in the year but had been playing well until a 42-17 loss at Mississippi last week.
A win for Tennessee would mean the chance to return to a bowl game after a 5-7 finish last year that left the team sitting out the postseason.
The Vols also want to send out their seniors the best possible way in their last home game at Neyland Stadium.
"A number of productive players that we're going to miss, and we'll always remember them as our first year together, starting this foundation," Kiffin said. "So, we're going to have to play really good. This is a (Vanderbilt) team that even though their win-loss record doesn't show it, can be very difficult."
The senior Vols will be introduced and allowed to run onto the field individually in the traditional senior day honor. What isn't clear is whether junior Eric Berry, the 2008 All-American safety, will join them.
Berry wouldn't say this week if Saturday's game will be his last at Neyland Stadium.
"Right now, I'm just trying to focus on doing everything I can do to get this win at home," he said. "No telling whether it might be my last or if it's not. Just want to take everything in and try to appreciate these last games of the season."
Still looming for Berry is the NCAA career interception return yardage record. He started the season needing only 15 return yards to surpass Florida State's Terrell Buckley, who logged 501 return yards from 1989 to 1991.
He had a 7-yard return against Memphis earlier this month and is trying not to focus on getting the other 8 yards.
"Yeah, that would be nice to get that, but that's in God's will. If God wants me to break that record, I'll break it," he said. "All I can do is just go out there and give everything I've got, and make sure I'm ready to play."
Tennessee has a history of success against Vanderbilt on its side. The Vols lead the all-time series, though the record is in dispute. Tennessee says the record sits at 70-27-5, while Vanderbilt claims a win in 1918 that the Vols don't recognize.
Still, Tennessee has won 25 of the last 26 meetings. The Commodores' only win in that span came in a 28-24 decision in Knoxville in 2005.
Vanderbilt defensive lineman Adam Smotherman hasn't forgotten that game, played during his senior year of high school. The redshirt junior from Smyrna is looking to be a part of another Vandy victory.
"This is huge for me," he said. "When I committed to Vanderbilt, all the Tennessee fans at my high school and everybody I knew was like, 'Oh why would you want to go to a losing program? Why don't you go to Tennessee, a home-state guy?' I said, 'Vanderbilt's where I want to be, and we're going to beat Tennessee.'"
The Commodores finished 2008 with their first winning record and first bowl appearance in 25 seasons. Now it's about pride and beating their top in-state rival.
"Right now we're playing for ourselves. We're playing for this team right here," Vanderbilt punter Brett Upson said. "We've worked way too hard in the offseason and during practice and everything for the season to be like this."

They may be "just" Vanderbilt, but I am worried.

GO-VOLS!!!

I understand what you're saying and usually I am a closet pessimist (wife says always but what does she know), don't worry about Vandy today.
They (Vandy) may come out all jacked up and hang in there for a while, but today is all about fixing last week, the seniors, and perhaps EB.
Go Vols!!

Vandy needs to look elsewhere. No chance.

Why is Steve Martin so pissed at that Ref?

LOL... Have said for years that Steve has been moonlighting as the COMODE.DOORS coach... this oic is proof positive...

Strongly concur!! Peabody College should be banned from the SEC, across the Styx section of the TN River, never to return. Let them apply for AA status, as in NAIA. I have it on good authority that they received a waiver from the conference to start the catcher and first basewoman from the title 10, girls softball team to improve the D-line. They will be the ones with the shortest pony tails in the black and urine stained shirts today.

Guys not to be a spoil sport. But when it comes to Ivy league type Schools showing up to play. Just ask So. Calif about Stanford. Just a thought. Go Vols
cltvol writes:
Comparing Vandy to Stamford is like comparing an I-40 rock slide to the SF 1906 earthquake. Its not the same my well-meaning friend. Remember, this is Vandy sans Jay Cutler. And how bout the year he's having?
VolinCalif writes:
Both your and clt points well taken. Just don't want the Vols to take Vandy too lightly. We didn't really think Miss would beat UT and we got spanked. But I see us running the table now, Too many things happened last week to keep everyone's mind on the upcoming game.

Steve Martin wasn't really p.o.'d at the ref. He was just trying to be a actor. That was the same look that he has been giving to cameras since he stopped playing a Egyptian pharoah and a Czechoslovakian wild and crazy guy! I don't get it really. My old army boots are more worn out than Steve Martin's old look. Why did you even bring this up? I still got a pair of those boots packed away somewhere. But why are we talking about them? Nobody cares about those boots but me, and nobody cares about Steve Martin's face but you. They are my boots, not your boots. So don't start caring about them. Seriously.
Razor784 writes:
Normally I always worry about Vandy, but as beat up as they are I think they'll have trouble staying within 2 touchdowns today
VolinCalif writes:
Wrong I care. Still have my Piss pot and last pair of boots packed away. I hope when we're gone others will at least have some respect for what it all stood for.

It's there choice not to have bye week. They practically forced Kentucky and us to swap end of year game a few year ago, so they could finish this weekend. Last year SEC mandated all teams would play a game next weekend to not give one team an advantage in Championship game. I know they'll probably never get there, but Vandy's game next week: Bye. So much for Slive's rules.

Come on Vols, whip up on the Vandies.
Giv'em the beating they deserve...GBO!
VolunTenMile writes:
I, too, am a closet pessimist (or realist, as I tell my wife). Even without that, one has to be aware that, historically, the Vols have come out flat for this game and Vandy has been pumped up and played way over their heads. Tonight will be a real test of the new coaching staff. Can they bring the guys back up from being McClusterf***** last week? I'm believing they can. GBO!
murrayvol writes:
Be honest. Where would they look?
Is it worth all the pain and embarrassment to cling to the SEC treasure chest. Evidently yes.
murrayvol writes:
Good point. While they can't brag about sustained success, they do bring it once in awhile.
volnbig11land writes:
hahahaha, spot on concerning the "realist" part. That is the same thing I tell my wife! She is the eternal optimist, and I've asked many times, how do you deal with so much disappointment? Either you get what you expected, or your don't. It's kind of a no win if you ask me.
At any rate, I still have my boot camp boots from 82, thought I was the only one who did that.
Go Vols!
volnbig11land writes:
Good point yourself, I didn't see the joja tech game but vandy hung in there.
That's no small feet with that dang wish bone the jackets run!
Wish we would drop the cali teams (I know, it's good for recruiting) and renew the jacket series.
murrayvol writes:
I understand this. If I were Vandy, I'd want to get this over asap.
volnbig11land writes:
Agree x 4.
p.s. Berry only needs 7 or 8 yards but 16 is better!
jimr07 writes:
Well, they should start an SAT conference with Vandy, Duke, Tulane, Rice, SMU, Wake Forrest, and other schools that are not NFL prep teams.
halloffamebowler writes:
Somebody urinate in your cherrios this morning? Volatil was only bringing a little laughter into our life while referenceing that the coach looked like Steve Martin. Why don't you retrieve those boots and walk all over yourself.

On another note
B.J Comeman
7-25 for 36 yards 0 td 2 int.
I think J. Crompton is the best choice that Kiffin made when he came to UT.
TommyJack writes:
Probably true. But to be fair, BJ is not surrounded by much talent at Nooga.
ncvol17 writes:
Guys, Ole Miss had the latent talent to be voted pre season #4. Anyone who thought we would walk into Oxford and win doesn't follow football outside the state of Tn. Vandy is a different animal...The Cats will be a very tough test in Cat Land. They hae the will, desire, and talent to beat us. A 6-6 bowl team would be an embarassment to any long time Vol fan I would hope. It would be to me & I have spent my $$ to travel to GA, Fl, TX, Calif & Az to watch the VOLS in the past as well as many closer locations. I know economics and recruiting require us to go bowling at 6-6 but I sure hope it can be at least 7-5
