5 Big Things: To beat Kentucky

1. Bundle Up: The weather forecast is for low 20s and light snow - oops, that's the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage. But it will get chilly in Commonwealth Stadium tonight, although mid-40s isn't bad under the circumstances. There have been colder UT-UK kickoffs at noon. If you're going, dress warm because you don't want to get the chills and leave early. This one's going down to the wire.

2. Kicking to Cobb: It's not just that Alcoa's Randall Cobb is dangerous from the line of scrimmage. He's also a weapon returning kickoffs (25.2-yard average) and punts (13.3 yards and a touchdown). The Vols have made adjustments and largely solved the early-season kickoff-coverage woes. No backsliding when No. 18 in blue is back deep.

3. Fumble-Free: Tennessee has made it through 11 games without losing a fumble on a run from scrimmage. Montario Hardesty lost one after catching a pass against Western Kentucky, but the skill-position guys are clean since then. Jonathan Crompton has lost two fumbles, Janzen Jackson gave one back returning a fumble recovery on defense and Dennis Rogan muffed a punt. That's it.

4. Ends Game: It's never a good thing to go into a game concerned about the availability and durability of your starting defensive ends. But that's where Tennessee is tonight. Chris Walker (elbow) and Ben Martin (hip) will be game-time decisions, Lane Kiffin said Thursday. Walker is one of UT's difference-makers and Martin has held on to the starting job over Gerald Williams the past nine games for a reason.

5. Rush Hour: Kentucky ranks 11th in the SEC in rush defense, allowing 179.3 yards a game and an SEC-high 4.6 yards per carry. UT's Hardesty is coming off a career-high 171-yard game against Vanderbilt and looked like he had plenty of gas in the tank. The Vols might want to keep him warm on a cold night.

If we have solid tackling we will have a fairly easy win.

I agree. With JJ back I see us being able to get that done. Key on the few playmakers they have and then run, baby, run.

Vols 42
Cats (Meow) 17

This will be a very tough win. It's on the road, Kentucky is a good team with lots of incentive to play hard, namely the streak we have against them. They beat Auburn on the road, as well as Georgia. We are beat up at DE and LB. Since they play weak against the run, there's our ticket. We should wear the running backs out, after all they have a month till the next game. They have an inexperienced QB, so we gear to stop the run and force them to pass. One fly in the ointment is Cobb - remember what McCluster did to us. Hopefully our defense will be tighter than that day.

Go Volunteers!!! Last game of the year. Let's get that road win monkey off our backs and get a better bowl game!!!!

Here's hoping Eric Berry runs one back for a touchdown. Or at least gets the career interception record.

Or maybe not...if he'll come back next year!

I agree with your post.
Cobb not as fast as McCluster but thwe wildcat formation has given us trouble all season long.
Will be a hard fought game and of course the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win
GO BIG ORANGE!!!

exciting game tomorrow night in lexington, janzen jackson back starting. lets hope he and berry can wreak some havoc on randall cobb. Tennessee's offense should ride on hardesty and brown into the sunset. if the cats load the box, open up the play book and let crompton pick them apart, he can do it, he's shown he can. jones, moore, and stocker will be key in this game if kentucky elects to load the box. lets go vols!! 7-5! 2nd in the east, heck of a leap from last years 5-7 bowl-less campaign, especially with a rebuilding program under a new regime. we can do it.

Game will be a shoot-out. With beat up Vol D Cats will score some points. We need Jackson and Berry to make some plays and force some turnovers. Crompton has to have a big night as Cats will load the box nad force us to throw. I think he does. Vols 35-21 game is closer until Vols score late maybe on another pick six.

On second thought make that 35-23 Cats kicking FG's in red zone.

I think bowl stats count now. At least that's what they said about Tebow breaking Herschel Walker's record.
