Tennessee cornerback Eric Berry (14) reacts as Auburn wide receiver Terrell Zachery (81) struts into the end zone scoring on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at Neyland Stadium. Tennessee lost the game 26-22.

The Monday morning skies are cloudy over Neyland. And so are the spirits of Vol fans.

Saturday's night loss to Auburn has many fans counting up the remaining games and wondering if the Vols can even get bowl eligible.

The 'we got the coaches" optimism of late summer is turning like leaves in October into a more realistic year of rebuilding.

Ah, but what the wonders of a win over Georgia would do for the collective Vol nation psyche. Bring on the Dawgs.

Here's a rundown of what was being said following the Auburn game.

No one thinks Tennessee was going to be a conference contender the first year of re-building. Why do they write such? Just to fill the column?
I for one think we are building the foundation of our future team.

People who get on here and bash the TN program no absolutly nothing about football and dont deserve to called a fan! If you really expected TN to win the SEC or whatever then you set yourself up for the disappointment you feel now! THIS IS A REBULIDING YEAR! Next year should be somewhat better, but dont count on going to SEC Championship for about three years. Give this staff some time and patience. Rome was not bulit in a day! I suggest you read Meat Market...about Coach O. We will get the talent it takes...and when we do all you fair weather fans will be living high then!

I was in attendance @ Neyland Stadium this past Saturday, & for the most part the fans were electric throughout the game (with the exception of the drunk, moronic boo-birds). We're 100% behind Coach Kiffin, his staff, & his team.

UT is down now. But I'm proud of the team going out game after game and playing with a sense of purpose. Keep it up boys!

As for the pretend fans who behave like little more than fair weather friends and spoiled self-centered children the moment thing don't go their way, LEAVE. The football program under Fulmer went to pot via the laxness of a coach who'd grown too comfortable in his position to care enough to maintain high standards in either recruit quality, discipline quality, or coaching quality to lead kids in his care to the next level. He was a great guy in so many areas but he just slipped farther and farther down as a coach. We're now paying the price and some of us are too dimwitted to understand that the new people need to actually REBUILD what was once a great program. There's no magic to this. It takes both time and sweat and genuine fan support. Anything otherwise hinders the program not help it. So all you folks out there being a hindrance, just LEAVE. Maybe even become Gator fans or something. We don't need or want the disease of negativism at the UT. Take it somewhere else.
I'm severely disappointed with the team's fortunes like most fans. But I believe better days are coming and the kids playing now and their coaches are laying the foundation for it. True fans will praise the team's effort, yell lustily at every positive play and encourage the team when it isn't playing well. You think none of our players read these forums? You think the poison spewed here has no effect on them and by default talented friends they might convince to commit to UT? That's why the poison here should be weeded out. Hopefully the moderator or owner of this site will institute measures for filtering said poison and soon. Vols forever!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. If he loves the team he should say it's okay to coach. Not the words of a competitor though.

If he was a star pitcher and in a game and starting walking in runs, coach would take him out for a lesser pitcher in a second. Then, try him another day. I think this is a pretty exact comparison.

the good thing is that this program is on its way up...kiffin isnt playing his guys hes playing fulmers..kiffin said that this will take time...ive got kiffins back...hes going to be great

Voluvr writes:

Just like a starting pitcher that can't find the plate and is loading bases or getting jacked, sometimes leaving him in is what hurts his confidence. However, in this case I'm not sure there's anything coach can do to hurt his confidence.

Equally important is the confidence his offense has in him. Not good for a QB to lose his offense.

AFVol423 writes:

Rebulding is an excuse. The difference between the Auburn team and the Vols last year was razor thin. New coaching staff and 12 months, the difference is vast. Auburn executed on Offense, we did not. Auburn special teams contributed to the win, ours contributed to the loss. I believe it is all about coaching. Auburn coaches found a way to put basically the same players in a winning postion. Our coaches have not. Special teams is where coaching shows up the brightest. Our special teams have been...well, not very special. Even a poor talent team can protect the kicker, and prevent huge yardage on returns if they are well coached. Saturday our coverage was all over the field except where the runner was. Yes, players execute the plan but it's all about the coach. I'm beginning to see that we hired a team of recruiters to coach a football team. If they continue to perform this poorly on the field, they will begin to fail in the living room as well. I just hope they get this straight. I'll keep wearing Orange and going into the games with the anticipation of a child on christmas. Unfortunately reality sets in quickly when the offense goes three and out over and over and kick off returns leave the opposing team playing on a short field.
The present was wrapped nicely and the excitement was built but Coach Kiffin forgot to buy batteries.

RoadTrip writes:

You can put down fans that are upset with the team and one player in particular's performance all you want. You can tell them to leave and to stop yelling and saying what is on their minds. Then if they do that, you will find the stadium half empty and echoing from bad rap and rock music. Then much of the money will go away that pays for the program to have all of the impressive facilities and to pay high priced/profile coaches to come and try to turn around a ship that has been heading in the wrong direction for years.

People have a right to complain when they see something wrong as long as they are specific and reasonable about their gripe. It does not take away from the coaches' or team's overall progress. It is not a straight line from mediocrity to greatness. Conflict is sometimes the best way to bring out the best in everybody - especially in a sport that is violently physical. Powerful egos leading teams with questionable practices and decisions deserve to be humbled on occasion so they can learn lessons as well. You will not get through to them by being nice and sitting around the campfire and singing "koom by ya."

This is the most accurate post I have read about the new staff at UT. I just hope we can get a good coach in 2 or 3 years when this staff proves they cant coach and we are still going 3-9. Looks like by the commits jumping ship that they have seen that this staff can not coach. I am only guessing here but I would guess that there are more UGA fans in the stands than UT fans this week. It will be like a home game for the Dawgs but hey, our coach sure can talk a good game. Maybe we can get another moral victory this week as we lose to UGA!!

There is a great deal of disappointment due to the fact that we are in the games and had a chance to win. My biggest disappointment this past weekend was based upon the coaching decisions that limited Richardson's play and the fact that on our last kickoff we did contain the run back. I would thought by that time, the staff would have recognized the return potential of Auburn and simply kicked the ball on the ground as they did before the half.

timetofireclk writes:

Okay, let's talk reality. G Jones ran his trap all week and the staff gave in and made him a vocal point. How many drops did he have on big plays?? Teague has shown he can catch but because Jones ran his trap, Teague got 1 ball thrown his way? Now it looks as though Warren has taken a page from Jone's book. Great coaching. Crompton! Great coaching. Lincoln! Sucked last year and still starting! Great coaching. 3rd and 10, we play a 15 yard zone! Great coaching. Nuke gets 41 yards on opening play in the nugun formation, not tried again! Great coaching. Playing defensive starters on special teams when they are already playing about 80 snaps a game, great coaching. Now I am not saying I expected to win the SEC but I did expect things to work differently than last year. CLK yaps about playing his freshmen but all I can see is them on special teams and the upper classman making all the mistakes and setting bad examples and they continue to play and the freshmen continue to ride the pines. Crompton is considered to have a great game when he fumbled a snap, fell down on a hand off, and completed less than 50% of his passes and the new staff REFUSES to even give anyone else a chance. Great coaching. USC beat us once with a converted defensive player at QB but we cant even give a backup QB a chance. Next year Crapton will be gone and we will have backups at QB that never see the field or a true freshman, well, if he dont jump ship. If our backup QBs suck so bad that they cant get a chance with Crapton playing, how can this staff justify running off Boyd, especially when we may only get one QB this year and we will lose our BEST QB? Finally, how can we get behind a HC that was happy with just not being blown out by UF and was outcoached by another 1st year HC with similar talent from last year? After all, we did have a better recruiting class than Auburn did last year and we only lost to them last year because of a Crapton fumble.

Everyone keeps making a big deal out of Nuke coming to UT, well all I have seen him do is return some kickoffs and he has had a couple of passes and the nugun a couple of times. I'm just responding to clear up an allegation, since you're just a troll.

We lost a single recruit this week. He was a JC commitment who didn't have a math course credit that is required by the SEC, so he started looking elsewhere. I wish him good luck wherever he goes, but I have complete faith in our coaches to find a replacement.

To look at Auburn's recruiting vs. our recruiting the last few years and conclude that their coaches are superior isn't entirely accurate. They do have great coaches, but they still had plenty of talent on their roster and an offensive coach who is more attuned to teaching young players, having come from high school, rather than the pro-style coaching of our coaches. Also keep in mind Auburn's much weaker schedule to date and you can see that they were able to ease into the season, while Kiffin's group had to immediately compete against elite defenses out of the gate. I think we'll see in the next 7 games how well these coaches have turned around the team. When they've got veterans to bring the new kids up to speed next year, we'll be able to truly judge the skill of our coaches in developing leaders, which is the ultimate test of a coach.

timetofireclk writes:

Here is my honest pick for this weekend.
UGA 55 and UT 21
Hardesty runs for 200 yards 2 TDs
G jones has 7 catches and 9 drops 1 TD ( would have had another but he ran out of bounds in the endzone)
Hancock has 5 catches and 7 drops
UGA has 400 return yards
Cox throws for 700 yards 6 TDs
UGA runs for 500 yards
Crompton throws for 201 yards completes 15 of 45 with 1 TD and 6 ints, 3 fumbled snaps, and 2 falls on hand offs.
EB has 19 tackles
Rico has 17 tackles
UT has 31 plays
UGA has 122 plays
CLK comes on his TV show and talks about the improvement that is being made in the passing game and none of the bad things were Crompton's fault because the other team kept getting in the way. He announces that UT has requested that Crompton get another year of eligibility.

When you talk of a much weaker schedule are you including UT? LOL Yes it was apparent that their offensive coach is much much much better than what UT has. You talk about talent on their roster, are you talking about the same team that only beat us last year because of a Crompton fumble? The team that went 5-7 just like us? Looks like after UT, they were still easing into the season. The score did not tell the story as to how bad they beat us.

The play calling has been excellent. Well balanced. Running game good despite no passing game. The team isn't committing anywhere NEAR the penalties and stupid mental mistakes of last year. If you cannot see how clear it is that this team lacks a QB and receivers right now you are blind.

If Crompton and the receivers could complete 70% of the throws with a TD-INT ratio of just 6, there would be no-one complaining today. This offense is dramatically improved in fundamentals and blocking - it lacks playmakers. They are coming.

So you are saying that last year's class was a joke and they cant play? I think they were good players but are being coached by bad coaches. We have lost the season so whyy not let the freshmen play and bench the WRs that drop passes? Why not play a Jr QB and get him ready for next year? I just sold my 8 to Dawg fans. It was like I was telling them earlier, it will be a home game for UGA because CLK cant coach and cant make adjustments. Monte, plays a 15 yard zone on 3rd and 10, Crompton will be good for at least 21 points to UGA, UGA's kick return team should all get career highs, UT's WRs will drop at least 15 passes, and all you have to do is put 8 in the box because we will run every other play up the middle.

Don't quite see it that way. Auburn players outperformed some of our guys. Our coaching staff in solid (despite the JC boondoogle).
