Simmons narrows basketball choices to Lady Vols, LSU

It’s going to be a jump ball between Tennessee and LSU for guard Meighan Simmons.

The 5-foot-9 guard from Steele High in Cibolo, Texas, who also had considered Maryland, Rutgers and Duke, said that she will chose between the two SEC schools, the only schools to which she made official visits.

“Where does Meighan fit in the best? Where does Meighan need to be? She needs time to reflect,’’ Steele coach Kari Wallace said Tuesday. “She wants to have time to come down from the ‘ohs’ and ‘ahs’ and make sure she’s making the right choices, not in the moment.”

Wallace said Simmons told her that she was impressed with both schools. Simmons also told the San Antonio Express-News that “it’s always been like a dream of mine to go Tennessee” and added that the sentiment “kind of does” factor into her choice.

Simmons averaged 25 points per game last season in leading Steele to the Class 4A state semifinals. The reigning two-time Express-News player of the year also averaged 4.7 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists per game.

Simmons made her official visit to UT this past weekend.

The Lady Vols have one commitment — guard Lauren Avant from Memphis — for their recruiting class and have another scholarship open.

If it's down to UT & LSU as the choices for Simmons, and it's Women's Basketball, it should be a no brainer. Comparing the 2 coaches (Chancellor to Summitt) is like comparing spam to Filet Mignon, or Ripple to Champaign. Chancellor's only in the Hall of Fame due to his WNBA accomplishmnets thanks to Cynthia Cooper. At Ole Miss he couldn't win anything close to a National title and after Coop retired his pro team could only manage one play off series win the next 6 years. Summitt could outcoach Chancellor in her sleep. Simmons would get a quality education from either UT or LSU. Her basketball education and experience would be considerably enhanced by choosing to come to Knoxville!
