Service planned for Mahelona in Knoxville

A Knoxville memorial service for former University of Tennessee football player Jesse Mahelona is scheduled for Sunday at Faith Promise Church beginning at 7 p.m.

Mahelona was killed in a Sept. 5 automobile accident in his native town of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He was 26.

Those attending the service are asked to bring a letter explaining the impact Mahelona made on their lives. Those letters will be bound together and sent to Mahelona’s family in Hawaii.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jesse Mahelona Trust. All proceeds from the trust will be directed to Mahelona’s wife, Brandee Kukita-Mahelona, who is pregnant with the couple’s second child, and his 19-month-old daughter, Karter.

I was fortunate enough to meet Jesse and actually used to play pick up basketball with him. A great individual who loved his family, genuinely loved life...and of course was a great athelete. He was taken from us far too soon. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with his family.

I don't know what hiresanders said, and judging from the responses I'm glad I didn't see it. KNS, PLEASE ban hiresanders from this site! Thank you.

R.I.P., Jesse.

I didnt know him personally but was always a big fan of his and knew if he was on the field that there was a chance he would make a play when we needed it. God Bless his soul and his family.
